Video Transcript for Reese Weight Distribution RP54977 Review

Today we are going to take a look at the Reese Tightened Weight Distribution Shank; part number RP54977. This item is designed for use with the trunnion bar weight distribution system. It provides both a rise and a drop. This is pretty hefty weighing in at 27 pounds. It has a black powder coat finish, and it's made right here in the U.S. Quick note, this shank will not work with weight distribution systems that use washers for angle adjustment of the weight distribution head.

It fits a 2 1/2 inch trailer hitch receiver. It has a tongue weight capacity of 1700 pounds. The distance from the hitch pin hole right here to the ball hole is 15 1/4inches. The ball hole will be out here in this area after it's attached to the weight distribution system. You'll attach your weight distribution system through here and then the ball platform will be out here.

The rise is 8 1/4 inches from the top of the shank to the highest that the ball platform can reach. The drop is 5 1/4 inches from the top to the lowest that the ball platform can reach. The overall length from here to here is 17 1/2inches and this item does come with a limited lifetime warranty. That should do it for our Reese Tightened Weight Distribution Shank; part number RP54977.

The shank is excellent - it does exactly what I would have expected it to. It is actually better than the original. The original shank on my 2004 Super Duty caused my 22' enclosed trailer to ride at an angle and the rear of the trailer scrape the ground. With this shank, the trailer is dead even, no more scraping - perfect. The Reducer Sleeve from 2-1/2" to 2" leaves a bit to be desired. As has been reported this is not a "snug" fit. Because it's not a "snug fit" after a year the pinhole is showing signs of wear. I am glad I went with the new shank vs. relying solely on the reducer sleeve to tow my trailer. 344586

The pin clip would not slide in place with the shank in the hitch. Your customer service represent suggested grinding off part of the power coating to make the holes line up. The suggestion worked but also had to grind some metal. Not a very good product. 277390

This was exactly the drop-in replacement shank I needed when I found out that my new truck came with a 2.5" hitch receiver. My Reese trunnion bar WD head fit with no issues and with the size and weight of this thing, it's hard to imagine it could ever be the weak point of my hitch setup. 320235

Extremely heavy duty product that was exactly what I need for my 2016 RAM 2500. I tow a 32 ft 1955 Spartan Mansion travel trailer with a Reese weight distribution hitch. The trailer is by design low to the ground so I needed the extra drop this shank is made for. Product arrived 4 days after I placed my order. Packaging was great and this was the lowest price I could find anywhere. Couldn't be happier with my purchase! 394746

In moving from a 2003 F250 to a 2017 Ram 2500, the height of the receiver hitch increased by 4 inches creating a problem with my WD hitch. My WD head was already mounted in the lowest holes of the old shank and when moved to the new truck, the ball was (surprise!) 4 inches too high to tow the travel trailer level. I needed a different weight distributing shank to address this problem as well as to address the problem created by the larger receiver (2 1/2 inches) on the new truck to avoid use of a reducing sleeve. So this shank solved both problems! As others have noted, I did have to grind a bit of the coating in a couple of places to get the shank to completely fit into the receiver - not a big deal to me. It does get the WD head down where it needs to be to tow level and it is a heavy, well made piece. Be advised the WD head mounting hole spacing on this shank is 1 1/4 inches and some of the older WD heads (like mine) were 1 inch - so you may need a new WD head as well. 374387

  • Weight Distribution for a 2015 Ford F-250 and Trailer with 1,600 Pounds Tongue Weight
  • Based on the amount of tongue weight your trailer has (1600+) the Reese Strait-Line weight distribution system, # RP66075, is one option. It is rated for 1,000 to 1,700 pounds tongue weight so as long as you stay within that range this system will work. To get to that maximum capacity you will need a 2-1/2 inch shank with the system, # RP54977. And for a ball you can use # 63840. Another option is the Blue Ox SwayPro system # BXW2000 which is rated for 1,500 to 2,000 pounds tongue...

  • I do have a solution for you but unfortunately you do have to use a TorkLift XL Shank like part # TLM9011 along with the SuperHitch on your tow vehicle to be able to use the Everest Weight Distribution System # TLWD1000. If 15,000 lbs is the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of your trailer or that is the most it will weigh when you are towing it then you can potentially use the Strait-Line # RP66075 instead. This is rated to tow up to a 17,000 lb trailer and it has a tongue weight...

You will want to make sure that the 5-3/4 inch drop or 8-1/4 inch rise on the Reese Titan # RP54976 shank will work properly for the setup on your 2011 Ford Super Duty. • I spoke with my contact at Reese about using a weight distribution system for a 2 inch hitch in a 2-1/2 inch hitch with a reducer sleeve. He said you can do but it will reduce the capacity of the system so it is not recommended. There are some systems that do not come with a shank that you can add a 2-1/2 inch shank to. First, to select the right system, we need to go by the total tongue weight. This is the tongue weight of the trailer loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution for Motor Home Towing 13,000 lb Trailer
  • If your motorhome does indeed have a hitch with a 10000 lb capacity, it means that the hitch is capable of towing a trailer weighing up to 10000 lbs. To confirm this, the hitch should have a sticker or plate on it listing the capacities. The tongue weight capacity should also be listed. Tongue weight is the amount of weight that can safely be suspended from the receiver (or the maximum downward force exerted). The hitch might also list a capacity for use with a weight distribution (W/D)...

  • Weight Distribution for a 2014 Chevy Silverado 2500HD and Trailer with 1400 Pounds Tongue Weight
  • A weight distribution system rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds is certainly enough for 920 pounds of tongue weight. But you also have to factor in what the tongue weight would be with the trailer loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of your 2014 Silverado. That could push it over that 1,200 pound capacity. A safe bet would be to go to a system rated for 800 to 1,500 pounds, such as # RP66130 that you mentioned. Given you estimate a tongue weight...

I do not recommend mixing weight distribution manufacturer parts because they are not tested together.
