This shank solve my problem of not being able to open the rear compartment on my Suburban when the travel trailer was hooked up. The extra length of this shaft made the difference.

- RP3214
by:

Shank worked great. I had to grind some of the weld where the vertical shank is welded to the horizontal shank because I couldn't slide my adjustable hitch head into location and install bolts. The extra length gave me enough room to open and close the rear gate of my truck while connected to trailer.

I have had this shank for a year now and it works very well. Service and delivery was better then I could have ever imagined. Thanks!!!!

I purchased this extended shank so that I could open the tailgate on my truck while towing our travel trailer. We found this necessary to let our dogs out of the back (they ride in a camper shell) while towing. the product works well, and solved our problem.

After numerous RV trips, I am still very happy with this item, and with the help I received from etrailer salespeople.

The 14" long Reese Weight Distribution Shank is exactly what I needed to install hitch mounted mud flaps. The shank provided by Fastway e2 Weight Distribution Hitch was too short for that purpose, see photos. The Reese shank is solid and well made. Shipping was fast and online purchase was easy.

Great product -great service -worked perfect for me- I would recommend this company for any products.

I needed a new longer shank because the new trailer bought I couldn't lower the tail gate all the way down which would have made loading and unloading a pain. I was exited to find out that you sold a longer one that would make my life easier. When the box came and it was empty I couldn't believe it. I was leaving on vacation in a little more than week and thought I would not be able to get a replacement in time. You guys were right on it. When I called to say the box was empty you shipped out a new one right away and I received it today. Just in time for my trip. I'm very happy with your customer service and will tell my friends about my experience. I haven't picked up my trailer yet but once I do I will send some pictures.

The shank arrived in time, and just as described. It replaced a 10" shank that came with my weight distributing hitch (an Eaz-Lift from Camco). Now I am able to lower my tailgate with my trailer connected - works great! Thanks again E-Trailer!

- RP3214

item was exactly what was described worked perfectly and was very fast shipment

- RP3214
by:

Perfect! Just what I needed to get the weight distribution head another 1.5" away from the bumper, allowing me to drop my tailgate when connected, plus giving me additional corner clearance when backing into tight locations. An added benefit is that this shank has a higher strength rating than my original shank! Thank you, eTrailer! You folks come through with exactly what I need in trailering products, whenever I need something!

- RP3214
by:

Very substantial product. I needed the extra length to be able to open my tailgate on the truck with the travel trailer hooked up. Gave me just the clearance needed. Very fast shipping as usual from etrailer. I've bought from them before for the boat trailer and will again as needed for parts.

- RP3214
by:

Perfect for what I needed. Connecting a weight distribution hitch to a Toyota Tundra Crewmax 4X4 (TRD off road). This one will give me enough ground clearance (11.5" from the ground to the bottom of the shank (installed 'downward') while setting the ball level for the travel trailer.

- RP3214
by:

Just installed so that I could let the tailgate down and not hit my RV trailer hitch jack, works great and you could see that it was a superior product, working with etrailer was a breeze and would recommend using them. Great service Great product

This shank is a solid steel shank and it is built like a tank. I would highly recommend it. I needed this one to allow more flexible height adjustable behind my motor home. Shipping was fast. I really do appreciate the very detailed product descriptions, pictures and dimensions. That helped greatly to make my purchase decision.

- RP3214
by:

I can now open my tailgate and take turns without scraping my taillights hauling my trailer. I needed this badly.

- RP3214
by:

Wow the shank arrived way ahead of time, exactly what I ordered, great price as compared to my local trailer supply store and free shipping right to my front door could no have asked for more, thanks etrailer.

Completely satisfied with this longer shank, it allows me to drop tailgate. etrailer will always be my first choice for trailer products.

This one is a little overkill, but apparently there wasn't anything in between. I do wish it had two drilled pin holes so I could adjust the length.

Excellent product. Just as advertise. This extended hitch shank allows me to open the tailgate now. Very good customer service and quick free delivery.

I am very pleased with the product. I paid for the 3 day delivery and was quite surprised that the order went out the same day and was received earlier than the 3 day expected date. This is a great company to deal with. I would recommend etrailer to anyone needing hitch or trailer accessories. Great Job etrailer!!!!!

- RP3214

Exactly what I needed. My old shank was 8 3/4 long and didn't leave enough room to open the tailgate on the truck. This one works fine.

I needed this longer hitch shank so I can open the tailgate on my truck without damaging it. Just installed it and so far it works.

  • Weight Distribution Shank Availability Similar to Curt Shank 17103
We have a shank that is basically identical from Reese part # RP3214 but we do not carry the specific Curt shank you mentioned. This Reese shank is the correct 14 inches in length and has the same amount of adjustment holes too. I attached a review video for this shank for you to check out as well.

  • Will Using a Longer Weight Distribution Shank Affect Towing
Going with a longer weight distribution shank like the Reese part # RP3214 that you referenced would work well for you. It would give you the added length you are looking for and would not cause your trailer to sway or have any other adverse reactions.

  • Dimensions of Reese Weight Distribution Shank # RP3214
You can see in the attached video that 16 inches is the overall length of the Reese Weight Dist Shank # RP3214. The 14 inches as you stated is the length of the horizontal shank so the 2 inches of additional length in the vertical shank is not included in that number. The photo on the product page with dimensions is still accurate.

  • Will Ratings Change if Weight Distribution Shank 3214 is Used in the Up or Down Position
No. The ratings and capacities do not change in the up or down position. The only things that change are a few measurements when using round or trunnion weight distribution systems. For round bars, it measures 16-1/2 inches from hitch pin hole center to ball hole center. For Trunnion bars that measurement is 15-7/8 inches. For round bars, there is a 2-3/8 inch drop or 5-5/8 inch rise. For trunnion bars, there is a 1-5/8 inch drop and 6-3/8 inch rise.

  • Will Using a Longer Weight Distribution Shank Affect Towing a 34 Foot Trailer
An additional 2 inches should not negatively impact towing the trailer. It is when you add much more length that it can become an issue. So at 14 inches instead of 12 you should not even notice the change. You will want to make sure that the Reese Weight Dist Shank, 3 RP3214, is compatible with your existing system. The holes where the weight distribution head attaches to are 1-1/4 inches apart on center. I have also included a link to our weight distribution FAQ article for you.
