Video Transcript for Reese Fifth Wheel King Pin 30861 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna take a look at the Sidewinder custom wedge for the Curt E-series 16K fifth wheels. Now fifth wheel wedge is a simple but reliable way to allow a fifth-wheel hitch to be used with a fifth-wheel Sidewinder pin box. This custom wedge will bolt in place with the universal wedge on the pin box and allows a new pivot point for the kingpin and a wider turn radius for the fifth wheel trailer. To keep the pin box from swiveling at the fifth-wheel hitch head, this custom wedge bolts onto the pin box will insert onto the hitch head, locks the pin box into place, and then since the pivot point is then moved towards the rear of your tow vehicle, you can easily make 90 degree turns, even with a short bed truck. This fifth-wheel wedge is designed to fit the Curt E-series 16K fifth wheel, and accommodates the sidewinder or fifth airborne Sidewinder pin boxes. It has a nice durable carbine black powder coat finish to help resist corrosion. This part includes everything here on the table, the wedge and the mounting bolts to install it.

That should do it for the review on the Sidewinder custom wedge for the Curt E-series 16K fifth wheels.

After I got it installed, I still had an inch of space between the end of the wedge and the pin but there is still plenty of "beef" to keep the hitch from wandering. It is much better than the "universal" Reese wedge.

Nicole, I have the turning point buy Lippert on my 5th wheel Gran Design, and what I dont like is the hitch pin itself, it is loose no matter what I do and the wedge was damaging my receiver so I took it off and dont use it at all. I can still turn fairly sharp anyway.

The wedge works great but you must keep the bolts tight. It has so much pressure on it that it will work it way back and out of position over time. The bolts are easy to reach and are the same size as the bolts on the sidewinder turret so it's not a problem to just tighten them when you tighten the bolts on the turret.

  • Wedge Recommendation to Connect Curt E16 Hitch to Reese Revolution Pin Box
Yes, and the correct wedge you need is the part # 30861 for your Curt E16 fifth wheel hitch # C16115 to connect to your Reese Revolution pin box. It comes with the needed bolts to install as well.

  • Are Sidewinders Compatible With Curt Q20 Hitches
I spoke to my contact at Reese and they do not have a wedge that is confirmed as a fit for your Curt Q20 Five hitch. He said that your hitch has such a wide mouth on it they never could get a wedge that would fit in there well and work. He said the only option you have would be to upgrade your hitch. For a similar hitch to what you have that would work with a Sidewinder check out the Pro Series Hitch part # PS30119. I attached a review video for this hitch plus an FAQ on Sidewinders...

  • Which Sidewinder Wedge is Designed to Work with Curt E16 Fifth Wheel Hitch
What you sent in a picture of is not a # 30861. That appears to be a universal wedge part # 201100. I couldn't find an invoice in our system where you ordered a # 30861 from us, but it looks like you possibly got shipped the wrong wedge.

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Wedge for Curt A16 Hitch and Revolution Pin Box
Curt changed their 5th wheel hitch model designations from the Q Series to the A Series and so for your A16 hitch the wedge you'll use is part # C16992 which will bolt on to your Revolution pin box.

  • Comparing Reese and Curt Sidewinder Wedges for Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
The Reese custom wedge # 30861 is flared out at one end so it should fit and lock out the pivot at the E16 hitch better than the rectangular Curt wedge # C16991. But since both fit the same hitch you could go with either one. As long as the wedge you use successfully locks out the pivot at the hitch then it will work.

  • 16k Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommended for Use with Reese Revolution Pin Box
The Curt Q series of fifth wheel hitches cannot be used with Reese Revolution or Sidewinder pin boxes because the jaws are too wide on the hitch. I spoke with my contact at Reese to confirm this. One option would be to go with the E16 hitch you referenced part # C16115 and then the wedge part # 30861. Or for a hitch more similar to the Q16 in features I would go with the Reese 16k Fifth Wheel part # RP30047. This has a 2 jaw system as the Q16 so it would provide a smoother ride quality...

  • Recommended 16K B&W 5th Wheel Hitch for Sidewinder Pin Box
If you are using the Sidewinder Wedge Kit for Curt E-16K Fifth Wheel Hitch # 30861 you asked from, that is not the correct wedge for your Curt A16 hitch. You would instead want the Sidewinder Wedge for Curt A Series 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # C16992. If you aren't a fan of the Curt A16 hitch and are looking to upgrade, I recommend using the B&W Patriot 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Dual Jaw - 16,000 lbs # BWRVK3200 along with the 5th Airborne Custom Wedge for B&W Fifth Wheels # SWW-06....

  • Using a Wedge with a Sidewinder/Revolution Pin Box and Curt E16 Slider
I recommend going with custom wedge # 30861 which is specifically designed to fit the Curt E16 5th wheel hitches. The universal wedge can be a good fit on some hitches but not all. In this case, you can try different configurations of the universal wedge and try it out but the custom wedge is going to be the best option.

  • Compatibility of Curt 5th Wheel Hitch With Lippert Turning Point Rotating Pin Box
The Curt # C16515-16026 would be compatible with both the factory puck system (as long as it's the 3 puck system, not just the factory gooseneck hitch) in your truck be as well as the Lippert Turning Point rotating pin box. This being said, the Curt #16 uses a slide bar type jaw system, which will allow a fair amount of movement of the king pin once it's locked into the hitch. This type of jaw system is found on what I'd call an entry level hitch. This movement will result in a fair...

  • Wedge for Curt E16 for Turning Point
Though the Sidewinder Wedge Kit for Curt E-16K # 30861 is not made for a Lippert Turning Point, we have had customers successfully use these wedges with the Turning Point so it will work with your Curt E16 # C16115.

  • Custom Wedge for a Sidewinder and Curt E-16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
If the universal wedge you are using with your Sidewinder did not lock out the pivot point of the trailer at the hitch, which is what the purpose of a wedge is, then that is what would have caused the problem. When the wedge locks out the pivot point that will allow the trailer to pivot 22 inches further back. But the turret on a Sidewinder (which is where it pivots 22 inches back) can also be locked out. So if the wedge was not in the right place and the turret was locked out the trailer...

  • Do I Need A New Wedge To Use A Reese Sidewinder With A Curt 5th Wheel Hitch
The universal wedge that came with your Reese Sidewinder Pin Box really should not be used with a Curt 5th Wheel Hitch. Instead, you will want to use a custom one as this will provide the tightest fit, part # C16992 if you have an A-Series Curt 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch or part # 30861 if you have an E-Series Curt 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch. If you have a Q-Series Curt 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch then this cannot be used with a rotating pin box like the Reese Sidewinder because of the head design...

  • Curt E16 5th Wheel Hitch and Base Rail Compatibility with 2017 Ford F150 5-1/2 Foot Bed
The Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16115 will fit the industry standard base rails compatible with your 2017 Ford F-150. If you don't have the base rails yet, then I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50087-58 confirmed to fit your truck. These brackets won't require drilling into your truck frame. If you want to use the kit # C16116, it will work with your truck, but you will need to drill into your frame...

  • Adjusting the Wedge on a Sidewinder/Revolution Pin Box For a Curt E16 5th Wheel Hitch
When installing a wedge for a Sidewinder, it is important to make sure the wedge is making contact with the opening of the fifth wheel head. Check out the photo I attached showing how the universal wedge should fit in a head. Keep in mind, this is a universal wedge, so there may be a small gap, even if the wedge is all the way against the king pin. For a better fit, I recommend using the Custom Wedge for the Curt E16 Fifth Wheel Hitch, # 30861. This wedge was designed to fit the Curt...

  • Best Sidewinder Wedge Kit Fit for the Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
I reached out to my contact at Curt and they advised me that once you actually bolt the Sidewinder Wedge # C16991 on the Sidewinder there should not be any wiggle room. The Sidewinder Wedge Kit for Curt E-16K Fifth Wheel Hitch # 30861 will provide the same fit as the # C16991. I recommend using the # C16991 or the # 30861 instead of the Replacement Universal Wedge for 5th Airborne Sidewinders # 201100 because they are specifically made for the Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch.

  • Custom Wedge For Curt E Series 5th Wheel Hitch and Reese Revolution
For a Curt E Series fifth wheel hitch, you'd use the Reese # 30861 wedge kit. Since you're using the Revolution, you'll want to keep your sliding Curt fifth wheel hitch in the fully forward position at all times. Operating with the hitch slid rearward will take too much weight of the front truck axle, which will negatively affect braking and steering. This will work great for you as long as you have a Curt E series. If it's a Curt Q series, you'll want to get a different hitch as the...

  • Problems Unhooking Trailer with Sidewinder King Pin from Curt 5th Wheel Hitch
You may want to check out the Sidewinder Wedge Kit for Curt E-16K Fifth Wheel Hitch # 30861. If you are using a universal wedge, it could be your problem. Curt also offers a wedge for the E16, part # C16991. I recommend the Reese wedge # 30861. This wedge is more of a custom fit than the Curt # C16991 wedge.

  • Can a Curt E Series Fifth Wheel Hitch be Used with a Sidewinder
The Curt E16 Slider hitch part # 16516 can be used with a Sidewinder like the part # RP34FR that you referenced. The Q Series of Curt hitches have a very wide jaw that prevents it from being compatible with a Sidewinder. The E series has more of a standard jaw design so it can be used with a Sidewinder. The correct wedge kit you would need is part # 30861 for your fifth wheel. If you had a Q16 hitch you could use the new wedge part # C16992 though.

  • Custom Wedge for Reese Revolution/Sidewinder Pin Box and a Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
There is a wedge for the Curt E16 5th wheel trailer hitch. You will need custom wedge # 30861. Considering the weight and stresses involved in 5th wheel towing, be sure to inspect the wedge, hitch, and pinbox before each trip.

  • Are Curt Q- or E-Series 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches Compatible with Sidewinder Pin Boxes
The Curt Q-series 5th wheel hitches are NOT compatible with Sidewinders! They are compatible with the E-series Curt hitches though. I checked your order and you did get a 16K E-Series hitch and wedge kit # 30861. The key with the wedges is that they need to be installed exactly as the instructions state. Any other orientation will not work. If the 5th wheel trailer is not tracking straight then the wedge is not in the right position or has come out of the right position. In some...

  • 5th Wheel Trailer with Sidewinder Pin Box Chucking in Curt E16 Hitch
Yes, what you are describing is normal for 5th wheel hitches that use a slide bar style jaw. The slide bar allows for a lot of play between the pin box king pin and the hitch jaws. But to be sure, make sure the jaw is fully closing and locking into place. Check the king pin on the Sidewinder for excessive wear as well. There shouldn't be hardly any wear on the Sidewinder king pin though because it is locked out at the hitch by the wedge. It can still move back and forth though. Normally...

  • What 5th Wheel Hitch Should Be Used in a 2014 Ram 1500 with 5-1/2 Bed
You are correct, the reason that the Husky 16K sliding hitch is not recommended for truck beds shorter than 6-1/2 ft is because the short slide travel does not provide enough turning clearance for sharp turns. If you understand your turning limitations and you are comfortable heading out on your trip with those limitations, then you can use this hitch. However, if you feel uncomfortable with using the Husky slider hitch, I have a couple of recommendations that you might want to review...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch/Install Kit for Towing 5th Wheel with 2018 Ford F-150 With 5.5 Foot Bed
We do have a solution for you, but the 10-12 inches of travel you'd get from a typical slider hitch won't provide the proper clearance between the front of the 5th wheel and the rear of the cab. The solution would be to replace the OEM pin box on the 5th wheel with a rotating pin box like the Reese Sidewinder. The Sidewinder is pin-box specific, because the bolt patterns pin boxes use can vary quite a bit. The Reese Sidewinder relocates the pivot point between the 5th wheel and the...
