Today we're going to be taking a look at a clevis hook with a safety latch. This clevis hook attaches to a chain and that allows you to easily connect the chain to whatever it is that you need to connect to. The safety latch mechanism is a spring loaded device. It's going to keep the unit from accidentally disconnecting. It's made from a really nice forge steel construction with a protective finish on it. It's going to keep it safe from rust and corrosion.
Working load limit for this hook is going to be 3,900 pounds. It's a 5/16 inch hook stamped right there and it's a G43 or grade 43 hook stamped right here. The pin that connects to the chain, that's going to have a diameter measurement of around 3/8 of an inch to 7/16 of an inch in diameter. The thickness of the hook, if you can see, is going to change depending on what area it is that you're wanting to measure. We're going to just mention a few basic measurements real quick, such as here at the thickest point of the chain. That's going to give us a measurement of around 1 1/16 of an inch.
From inside edge to outside edge, that's where you get that measurement from. The width, that's going to give us a measurement from this point here to the same point on the other side of about 5/8 of an inch. The hook opening, so if we open up that latch, measuring that area right there. That's going to give us an opening of around 13/16 of an inch. That's just measuring that gap right here, that opening that we have with the safety latch mechanism in the fully open position.
The pin opening, so this gap right here, has a gap of about 5/8 of an inch, and then you're going to have about 1/2 inch of space above that pin. That's going to do it for today's look at the clevis hook with the included safety latch mechanism.

It sounds like the 5/16 you mentioned is the diameter of the chain itself, and not the opening in the link.
