Video Transcript for In-Depth Review of the Replacement Magnetic Door Sensor for Kwikee Electric RV Steps

Hey guys, this is Kevin from etrailer, and today, we're gonna be taking a look at the replacement magnetic door switch for Kwikee RV Electric Steps. If you're having issues with your Kwikee electric step going in and out as you open or close your door, then the number one cause most likely is going to be that door sensor. So your door sensor's gonna come with two parts, there's gonna be one here with two wires and that's gonna hook up to your actual motorhome and to the wiring for the steps itself, and then you're gonna have a separate piece, which is just another magnet with a little bracket to hold it in place on the door, so that way, anytime it comes close to the magnet on our coach side, it's going to retract the steps, and when our door opens and gets further away, it's gonna break that connection between our two magnets and extend our steps. On our coach side, there's gonna be two wires that are coming off of our magnet, one you can hook up to the power, which is gonna be on that pigtail, and then the other one you can just ground, it doesn't matter which wire you use, it will both work for whatever purpose, it's just one has to go to ground and one has to go to power. Installation of your magnetic door switch is super simple. Let me show you how I did that.

So I've got my new magnet, and I've already gone ahead and crimped on a ring terminal and just hooked it up and tested it just to make sure that everything's working properly that there's no other issues with any of our wiring, and we had no issues, step went in and out as our door opened and closed with our magnet, so I know for sure this is good to go. So I'm just gonna trace this back through the opening that we already had. Originally, it looks like they kinda just drilled into here and passed it through the gasket. I'm just gonna do the same thing. If I need to, I may just have to take that ring terminal off and just crimp on a new one, but we might be able to just sneak it through there.

There is an adhesive backing on here, so I'm gonna take that strip off, and we'll stick it right on, and I'm gonna also reinsert those screws that are in our previous one. And we're just gonna run some more wire from our new switch back over to our 4-pole harness. Once again, we're gonna use heat shrink butt connectors, keep our wirings nice and protected. Hook that back on and we can put on our ground. All right, now that we got our wiring hooked back up, I'm gonna go ahead back up top, and we'll hook on our other magnet, make sure this is all working, and then all we got to do is just shrink up those butt connectors and zip tie it back in place.

So I use the door side of my magnet switch, if I get it close up to it, you can see that it's functioning properly, it's closing the step, 'cause it thinks that the door's closed, and as I pull it away, our step opens back up, so we know this is good. Now, one other thing that concerns me is just there is about a fingers width of space between the magnetic pieces here just because of how the door sits, 'cause they have it attached to the screen door, so I'm gonna put a finger here just to kind of simulate that, make sure that if my door closes, it's still gonna fit. All right, so even with that amount of space, we're still good to go. If you wanted to test that out yourself before installing it just to make sure that you have it close enough, 'cause if you don't have it close enough, these two magnets aren't gonna be able to communicate with each other and properly operate the door. But since we're all good to go, I'm gonna go ahead and take the backing off of my adhesive here, we'll stick it back where it was, and try and line it up with the screw holes that we already had, and we'll just reuse those screws from our previous one to ensure it stays in place.

Now, while you're doing this, you really wanna be careful, this is just plastic on here, so you don't wanna drill too hard, if you do, and you'll break it right off. All right, now that we get the magnet secured, we'll go ahead and close our door. As you can see, step's popping right in. If I open it up, step comes right out. Well, I think that about does it for today's look at the replacement magnetic door switch for Kwikee RV Electric Steps. My name's Kevin, thanks for watching..

Replacement part for my rv steps arrived a day early than expected. A quick install and my rv steps are now working as they should. Thanks e-trailer!

Everything was shipped promptly and was exactly as ordered.
You may want to do a better job packaging the step tread non-skid to prevent creases in the material. I was able to work out the creases.

by:

Worked as needed good service sent quickly ready to go!!

by:

Worked like it was supposed to

The door switch I got (black) works backwards. I’ve learned that some switches are wire open and some closed. I’m not sure if the white switch color is the key, but my original on a Monaco Motorhome is white. There is no indication on this website of how these switches work, but the item LC378054, black, does not work on a Monaco. When I open the door, the step goes in!
My rating has to do with lack of information, not product quality.

Yes the color does matter in this situation. You would need the white unit. # LC378047

You mentioned that the switch was not working and I wanted to ask you a few questions. How is the switch not working? What model is your step?

by:

Completed installation of 32 series steps. What
saved me much time was the review of my
2005 Newmar Kountry Starr by reading a
review of a 2005 Newmar Dutch Starr installation on the 146 review list supplied by etrailer. This is the job from hell because
there is no outside bracket to bolt to. Bolts (4)
go thru motorhome from inside step after you
tear apart floorboard of which bolts are imbedded. Steps need new 3/4 “ round magnetic
switch you can order from etrailer. otherwise
steps operate in reverse as it is a closed switch
from and older models. Last issue was
connection on new motor was defective and
intermittent. etrailer sent me a new one under
warranty. Another outstanding customer service
as usual from etrailer!

Already did this--steps work fine, but kiwi decided to change the polarity of the switch

by:

Fast shipping and easy to install

Thank-you Donna P
