Bearing, Race and Seal Information
More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.
The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.
Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.
Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Hi everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com, and today, we're gonna take a look at this Kodiak Dacromet Disc Brake Kit with 13 inch rotors and an 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern, and these are for 7,200 pound Dexter Axles. Now, these brake assemblies make it easy to upgrade from drum to disc brakes for better performance. Disc brakes will deliver better performance than drum brakes, because it gives you more consistent stopping, even at highway speeds, and also, dramatically shorter stopping distances. Maintenance costs are lower for disc brakes, because you have fewer moving parts that you have to maintain, repair, or replace. These integral cast iron hub-and-rotor assemblies are indeed one piece. They minimize lateral run out to prevent warping and provide a smooth ride with a balanced hub and rotor.
They use industry standard bearings and seals, which are sold separately, and the races are included. They also prevent heat related damage due to their vented design that effectively dissipates heat. They do match SAE specifications, and the Dacromet plating on the rotors and on the brackets are going to provide superior corrosion resistance for freshwater or saltwater use with a 300 to 400 hour salt-spray rating. Now, the E-coated calipers are cast iron and self-adjusting for smooth, equal braking, and the benefit of cast iron is that it does not flex like aluminum, less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth even braking every time. The low-drag design retracts the piston farther than other calipers for a cooler running brake, and on this caliper, I already have a brake pad removed, so you can see the inside here, this is a nickel-chrome-plated piston, and these pistons are 2 1/2 inches in diameter, and that's about 30% large than other brands, meaning more braking torque than the competition, and this kit does include high-performance ceramic brake pads on the calipers.
Now, the mounting brackets are ductile iron, providing strength and durability, they are a side support design, so that's going to ensure that the load is placed on the whole bracket and not the bolts, and the extra embossing provides an additional thread contact to ensure a tight, secure mounting for the caliper guide bolts, and this is a four bolt brake flange mounting configuration. Now, this kit includes everything that you see laid out here before me, these are two full brake assemblies, and you're gonna get two Dacromet-plated cast iron rotor-and-hub assemblies, two E-coated cast iron calipers, two Dacromet-plated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets, and then four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts, and then these two center screw-on oil caps that can be used with either grease or oil. Now, if you decide to use oil, you will need to use the unitized oil seals, and you can find them on our product page using item number 10-63. Now, a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines are required for these brakes to be activated, we do sell those separately if you need them, and they do require a psi rating of at least 1,500 psi. This kit, again, is designed to fit a 7,200 pound Dexter type axle with a number 42 spindle, and these are gonna be for wheel sizes 16 inches and larger.
Again, the bolt pattern is 8 on 6 1/2 inches, and the wheel stud diameter is 9/16 of an inch, and again, the rotor diameter is 13 inches. And for the bearing and seal information, you can find that on this product page. Well, that's gonna conclude our look today, I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy, thank you for joining me.
