Bearing, Race and Seal Information
More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.
The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.
Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.
Designed for axles with 5-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Today, we're going to take a look at the Kodiak Disc Brake Assembly Kit with this 12 inch hub-and-rotor, has a 6 on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern, designed for 5,200 pound to 6,000 pound axles, and they have a Dacromet finish on this. Now, this brake assembly makes it very easy to upgrade from drum to disc brakes for better performance. Disc brakes will give you more consistent stopping, even at highway speeds, and it gives you dramatically shorter stopping distances, and also, the maintenance costs are lower than for drum brakes, because you have fewer moving parts to maintain, repair, and replace. The Dacromet plating that's used on these parts provides a nice, superior corrosion resistance. For freshwater or salt water use, it goes through a 300 to 400 hour salt spray test. Now, the hub itself is all 1 piece. It's an integral hub and rotor all together.
Because of that, that'll minimize lateral run-out to prevent warping. It will provide a nice, smooth ride with the balanced hub-and-rotor. It does use industry-standard bearings, and the bearing races are already pre-installed in it. You can see the outer bearing races pressed in, and on the inner, they also do the inner bearing race right in here. That comes with the hub-and-rotor.
Now, it does also prevent heat-related damage, because it has this vented design to it. This will effectively dissipate heat from it, and it also will resist corrosion because of that Dacromet plating on it. Now, the caliper right here is a cast iron caliper. It is self-adjusting for smooth, equal braking. The cast iron construction of this does not flex like aluminum.
It is a low-drag design, so it retracts the piston further than other calipers for a cooler running brake. The piston on this, right in here, is a stainless steel piston. It is 2 1/4 inches in diameter, which is about 30 percent larger than other brands, so it'll give you more braking torque than the competition. If you noticed, it has the high-performance ceramic brake pads included. Now, the mounting bracket, this is a cast iron caliper mounting bracket. It provides strength and durability. If you notice the design on this, it is a side-support design, so it ensures that the load is placed on the whole bracket, not just the bolts.
Where the bolts go in, you can see they give you extra embossing, for additional thread contact, to ensure a nice, tight, secure mounting for your caliper guide bolts. This also is a 5-bolt brake flange mounting configuration. You can do weld-on with this, but you have to do a weld-on flange, which we do sell separately on our website. This kit includes everything shown on the table. It is 1 full brake assembly. Again, it's the Dacromet-plated cast iron rotor and hub assembly with the included bearing races, the Dacromet-plated cast iron caliper with the stainless steel bolts, the Dacromet-plated cast iron caliper mounting bracket with the hardware, the grease cap, the inner and outer bearings, the grease seal, and then the 1/2 inch by 20 lug nuts, to attach your wheel and tire to the hub-and-rotor. Now, the hydraulic brake actuator and the brake lines are sold separately. They are required for brakes to be activated. It does require a PSI rating of at least 1,500 PSI. These parts are made in the USA. The specs on this, again, it's designed to fit 5,200 pound up to 6,000 pound axles with the number 42 spindle. It does accept the wheel size of 15 inches and larger. The bolt pattern, again, is 6 on 5 1/2 inches. Rotor diameter is 12 inches. Brake flange configuration is 5-bolt, and the wheel studs are 1/2 inch by 12. That should do it for the review on the Kodiak Disc Brake Assembly Kit with the 12 inch hub-and-rotor, the 6 on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern, for 5,200 pound to 6,000 axles with the Dacromet finish.
