Kodiak Rotor Diagram

Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of stainless steel to prevent flexing and rust. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant stainless steel that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Video Transcript for Kodiak Trailer Brakes K1HR35S Review

Today we're going to review part number K1HR35S. This is the Kodiak disc brake assembly. Has the ten inch hub and rotor with the five on four and a half inch bolt pattern, stainless steel finish and has a thirty-five hundred pound weight capacity. This brake assembly will make it easy to upgrade from drum to disc brakes. Gives you better performance and it will also give you more consistent stopping even at highway speeds and a dramatically shorter stopping distance. The maintenance cost for the disc brakes are lower than for drum brakes because you have fewer moving parts to maintain, repair or replace.

Notice I used the industry standard bearings, seals, and races, which are all included. On the rotor itself you can see it has the vented design to it which will effectively dissipate the heat and that will prevent any heat related damage to the rotor itself. If you notice the hub itself is a galvanized finish. The rotor is stainless steel. Basically, you would slide this right over, just like that, to give you all one piece when you install it. The hub will have the bearing races already pre-installed, the inner races pre-installed, and the outer races all pre-installed.

The stainless steel and the galvanized construction's very durable and rust proof. It's ideal for extended marine use. They both have a one thousand hour salt spray rating on them. The caliper itself is a stainless steel caliper, which is self adjusting, gives you a nice smooth equal braking. The stainless steel construction does not flex like aluminum and it has a low drag design.

If I pop out the brake pad you can see the stainless steel piston in there. It's a low drag design which means it will retract the piston further back in there, keeps the brakes off the rotors so it gives you a cooler running brake. The stainless steel piston is also two and a quarter inches in diameter, which is about thirty percent larger than some of the other brands. Since it's larger it will give you a more braking torque than the competition. The brake pads, you can see they use a high performance ceramic brake pad in the caliper. The mounting bracket, it is stainless steel also, provides strength and durability.

See the way it's constructed, it has the nice side support design, this will ensure that the load is placed on the whole bracket, not just on the bolts. At the very top where the caliper guide bolts go, it has some extra embossing, gives you the additional thread contact for those caliper guide bolts, which will ensure a tight secure mount for the caliper. If you'll notice, this goes on to a four bolt brake mounting flange configuration so you need to have an axle that would have a four bolt brake flange on it, if you don't, we do sell a four bolt brake flange, a weld-on flange, we do sell separately on our website. This kit includes everything shown here. It includes the stainless steel rotor with the galvanized hub assembly, the stainless steel caliper, the two stainless steel caliper mounting bolts, the one stainless steel caliper mounting brackets with the four bolts and nuts all included, the inner and outer bearings and the grease seal and the grease cap and five half inch wheel lug nuts. One note I do want to mention is that when you change over to disc brakes it does require a higher line pressure of about fifteen hundred PSI compared to the standard drum brakes of about a thousand. What you would do is make sure that the brake actuator on your trailer will have at least a minimum of a fifteen hundred PSI rating. Few specs on this again, the axle that goes on is a thirty-five hundred pound axle with a number eighty-four spindle. It uses a wheel size of fourteen inches or larger. The bolt pattern would be a five on four and a half inch bolt pattern. The wheel stud diameter uses the half inch included lug nuts. The rotor diameter is ten inches. This mounts to a four bolt brake flange configuration. That should do it for the review on part number K1HR35S, a Kodiak disc brake assembly with the ten inch hub and rotor with the five on four and a half inch bolt pattern. .

The break flange bolts and nuts are not stainless or galvanized. They are zinc coated carbon steel which will be greatly degraded by rust if used in saltwater for just a season or 2 not to mention that you must take everything off in order to change these bolts of you find them to be less than par. Personally I think it would be better to include at least a step up to galvanized bolts and nuts especially at this price. Nonetheless it seems to be a well built product so far. Only time will tell though. 134802

I agree. I purchased stainless hardware from my local Ace Hardware when I installed my kit.

I purchase a set of these disc brake conversions for a boat trailer. The instructions were almost not needed, that's how easy the kit went together. I would recommend these to anyone looking to upgrade to disc brakes. I also replaced the master cylinder. 115558

Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Tie Down, Kodiak, or Titan Disc Brake Kit Recommendation for a 3500 lb Axle Boat Trailer
  • I have a great solution for you, but Tie-Down disc brake systems have a pretty poor reputation. They are known to have issues like what you described as well as rotor warping. The most common recommendation is to ditch them and go with Kodiak components as they have a stellar reputation. For a Dacromet Kodiak setup for a 3,500 lb axle the part # K2HR35D would be a great option that would work well. Ideally you would go with the stainless steel setup part # K1HR35S (would need a quantity...

  • Recommended Disc Brake Kit for a 2004 EZ-Loader with Tandem Dexter Axles
  • Adding a disc brake system will be a great addition to your 2004 EZ-Loader boat trailer with tandem axles. The parts you will need for this are a disc brake kit and a hydraulic disc brake actuator. I recommend the Kodiak disc brake kit # K2HR35DS because it will have stainless steel calipers and 2 corrosion resistant dacromet plated hub and rotor assemblies. Another option for you to look at is the Kodiak disc brake assembly # K1HR35S as it includes a single stainless steel rotor, stainless...

  • Corrosion Resistance Provided by Titan Disc Brake Kit # T4843200
  • The # T4843200 Titan Disc Brake System you refer to uses Titan's Dacromet corrosion-resistant plating. Performance wise, it's corrosion resistance is comparable to the silver-cadmium. Because silver-cad plating is some very nasty stuff (very toxic) it's being phased out and will be replaced with the Dacromet plating process. As far as corrosion resistance goes, the only better performer would be stainless rotors and calipers. Stainless would be a much more expensive option. We don't...

  • Recommended Disc Brake System for Salt Water Boat Trailer with Tandem Axles
  • To get the best braking power for your boat trailer you would want to have disc brakes on both axles. If you happen to be limited to one axle then you would want the rear outfitted. With a 5,000lb boat you likely have two 3,500lb torsion axles. The best finish for a salt water application is going to be stainless steel, next would be the KodaGuard and then Dacromet. For a 3,500lb 10 inch hub and rotor in stainless you will want a quantity of 2 # K1HR35S. Stainless is the best for...

  • Stainless Steel Trailer Disc Brake Parts Recommendations
  • For stainless steel brake parts the various components will have to be pieced together. You could go with a combination of dacromet and stainless steel parts using # K2HR35DS. With this kit the calipers are stainless and the rotors are dacromet. For stainless rotors and calipers you could use 2 of kit # K1HR35S. This kit comes with the bearings, races, and seal. Kit # K2HR35DS does not but would use 1 bearing kit # BK2-100 per wheel. For a brake line kit you can use # 18SI-BLKIT...

In the 3500-lb axle rating we do have Kodiak Disc Brake Assembly # K1HR35S that uses all stainless-steel components. This kit includes one brake assembly but no actuator and no brakes lines. These items you'll need to order individually. Kit # K1HR35S fits wheels 14-inches and larger, uses the same bearings as the Titan kit (# L68149 inner and # L44649) has the same 5-on-4-1/2-inch...

  • I do have the Kodiak disc brake hub and rotor assemblies. If you let me know the bearing part numbers on your trailer I can get you the correct disc brake hub and rotor assembly. The Venture VRT-4500 trailer uses torsion axles, that has a conical spindle that is attached to the torsion arm. I do not have replacement spindles for a torsion axle. Usually when a spindle is damaged it ends up that replacing the whole axle is around the same price as the cost of parts and labor to just replace...

  • Disc Brake Kit Recommendation for a Boat Trailer that Launches in Saltwater
  • Since you plan to use your trailer in saltwater I would highly recommend a stainless steel kit to prevent rust. For a stainless kit for one wheel assembly you would want the # K1HR35S for example. This comes with just one brake assembly. If you have one brake axle you would need to order a quantity of two of these. If you plan to put brakes on both of your axles you would need a quantity of 4 of these. • The Kodiak Disc Brake Assembly # K1HR35S is a stainless steel disc brake kit designed to fit number 84 spindles. In order to determine if you have the correct size spindle on your trailer you will need to pull a hub and either measure the spindle where the bearings and seal ride or get the bearing numbers that are stamped on the bearings. If your inner bearing is a L68149 and your outer bearing is a L44649 this kit would work well for you. Or if your spindle measures 1.06 inches where...

  • If you have 13 inch wheels on your trailer, then the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K1HR35S unfortunately, can not be used with 13 inch wheels. However, The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, # K2HR35DS, will work on a trailer that has 13 inch wheels. You will need to make sure that your wheels has the 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern. If they do not then your wheel will not fit on the brake rotors. I also linked a help article that will explain all the other parts needed to install hydraulic disc brakes.
