Single-Piece, Wraparound Jaw

Wraparound Jaw on Husky 26K W Fifth Wheel Hitch

The wraparound, single-piece jaw on this heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch offers excellent security and stability by surrounding your trailer's king pin. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact not only creates a stronger connection than you would find with a slide-bar jaw, but it also helps to reduce the rattle and jarring movement that is often experienced when towing a fifth-wheel trailer.

King Pin Safety Features

The jaw of the Husky Silver Series 26K W fifth-wheel trailer hitch will only close when your trailer's king pin is positioned correctly inside the hitch. A trigger plate sits just beneath the jaw. When this plate is pressed by the king pin, the jaw will fully close. Because the king pin must press the trigger plate on the underside of the jaw for the jaw to close, high pinning cannot occur.

King pin safety indicator on Husky Silver Series fifth-wheel trailer hitch

A color-coded king pin indicator is built into the handle so that you can easily determine if the jaw is open or closed. Any time that you can see the red tab at the rear of the hitch, the jaw is open. When no red can be seen, you can rest assured that you are properly hitched. Further secure your trailer to your hitch by inserting a padlock (sold separately) through the lockable tab on the handle.

Video Transcript for Husky Fifth Wheel HT31318 Review

Today we're going to review Part #HT31318, this is the Husky Replacement Head Assembly for the Husky Silver Series Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch. This has a 26,000 lb. weight capacity. Now for this review, I'm going over just this part here, which is the head assembly, and the head assembly will consist of this head, the yoke that it attaches to, then that yoke sits in the cross member. So basically to install this on a vehicle, you would still need to purchase the legs, either the fixed legs or the slider legs, and then the rails that the legs go into, and the installation kit for your specific vehicle. These parts would allow you to put this fifth wheel in your vehicle.

The rails and the installation kit and the legs are all sold separately on our website. This is a replacement hitch head, which will fit the Husky Silver Series 26,000 lb. fifth wheel trailer hitches. It has a single piece jaw design, which will wrap around the king pin to provide excellent jaw to king pin contact. That will give you maximum security with less rattle and chucking. The head itself is a fully articulating head, which makes for quick, simple hook-up, even on unlevel ground.

You can see it moves front to back and side to side, and since this head moves, it will move in unison with the trailer during travel to minimize the jarring. Also, on this head in the very back here, behind this jaw, there is a trigger plate, and that trigger plate will ensure proper hook-up. Basically, that trigger plate, if the king pin is in correctly, it will allow this handle and the jaw to completely close when it's securely inside the hitch. If the king pin is not installed correctly, it will not allow this handle or the jaw to close correctly, and I'll show you how to be able to tell that. Now it does have this easy to access lockable handle, which you'll set close to your truck cab, far from the pin box. As the king pin indicators on the back, I'm going to show you how they work when you are safely hooked up, and there you can also get a padlock, there's a pin and clip here to lock the handle into place.

You can also use a padlock if you want; we sell those separately for additional security. Also, you will be able to adjust or control the minimal fore and aft movement, in other words, the movement of this head assembly in the cross member itself, because it's all held on by this pivot pin right here. This pivot pin goes all the way through the yoke and holds the head to the cross member. On the very back I'll show you when I rotate this, there's a large castle nut, and just by tightening that castle nut, it will minimize your fore and aft movement of the head in this cross member. This does have a black powder coat finish. It does come with all the installation hardware here.

Most of it is yellow zinc fasteners, which will help resist corrosion. It comes with the instruction manual. The gross towing weight capacity on this is 26,000 lbs. It has a vertical load limit or pin weight capacity of 6,500 lbs. I'm going to rotate this now just to show you how this would operate. Right here on the back you'll see this pin and clip, that you can pull the clip off and then remove the pin. And then this handle, what you have to do to install onto your trailer, you just pull this all the way out, there's a notch that you push it forward and lock, that jaw will be completely open now ready for the king pin to slide in. When the king pin slides all the way in here, now the king pin indicators I had mentioned is right here and right here, so basically now, with no king pin in here, you will be able to see from the cab of your truck, this orange circle, which means the king pin is not in correctly, and there's a pin here that's flush in the head now. When the king pin would be inserted correctly, this king pin indicator would pop out which you'd be able to see, and this little part right here, on the handle would close the jaw completely, that will cover that orange. So between this being covered and this pin popping out, you would be able to tell if the king pin is installed correctly. Now a safety feature that will let you know the king pin is not installed correctly is if you back up and it releases the handle, but as you can see, the jaw is not fully closed, because it's not covering that orange ring or the pin's not popped out, so what that is telling you is the king pin is not in there correctly. If the king pin was in there fully, it would push on that trigger plate I showed you earlier. When it does that, you'll see that that means this handle completely locks the jaw, signals the jaw around the king pin, it covers up that orange circle, and then you'll see this pin is protruding out from the hitch head, so both of those will show you that the king pin is installed correctly and you're ready to tow. As I mentioned, here's that large castle nut that's on that pivot pin. It has the pin and clip through it right here. This is what you could tighten down to minimize your fore and aft movement of the head assembly in the cross member. Then just put your pin and clip through here or the padlock if you want, that we do sell separately. That should do it for the review on Part #HT31318, the Husky Replacement Head Assembly for the Husky Silver Series Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with a 26,000 lb. weight capacity. .
