The Sway Master electronic sway control system helps to eliminate trailer sway for a better, safer towing experience. The Sway Master is ideal for use on light- and medium-duty trailers that don't require weight distribution but can also be used along with a weight distribution system for an even better towing experience. The Sway Master is different from most other sway control systems because it is not a mechanical system that either actively holds your trailer in line or pushes it back into line. Rather the Sway Master is an electronic system that senses movement and activates your trailer's brakes to halt that movement. It features solid-state gyroscope and a GPS, which actively monitor sway and speed respectively. When the gyroscope senses sway, the system applies the brakes to correct it.

How Sway Master Works

While the built-in GPS and gyroscope are always actively sensing, the Sway Master does not activate until the trailer reaches 45 mph. This helps to prevent unnecessary braking when making turns at slow speeds. Once that minimum speed is met and sway is detected, an algorithm based on the trailer speed and the degree of sway is used to determine the amount of braking force that is needed to counteract the sway. The Sway Master unit will then activate your trailer's brakes with that intensity.

Sway Master Installation

To install the Sway Master, you will be required to drill into your trailer's frame. Attach the Sway Master unit to the tongue using the included screws. In order for the GPS within the Sway Master to work properly, the top of the unit must be completely exposed to the sky. Other than ensuring that the top is not covered and that the unit is pointing in the correct direction for hookup, there are no mounting restrictions. Place the Sway Master anywhere along the rail so that you can clear other equipment or obstructions on the frame of your trailer.

Sway Master Connector

The unit plugs in-line with your current setup. Just plug your 7-way trailer connector into the 7-way socket on the unit, and then plug the integrated harness into the 7-way socket on your vehicle. You will know the Sway Master is connected properly when the indicator light flashes 3 times. The light should continue to be illuminated as long as the unit is receiving power from the tow vehicle. If the light shuts off, there may be a connectivity issue.

Video Transcript for Hayes Weight Distribution - Sway Control Only - HA81775 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control System. The Sway Master is useful for use on light and medium duty trailers that don't require weight distribution. But it can also be used along with the weight distribution system for an even better towing experience. This weight control system is going to limit side-to-side movement of the trailer while towing. What it does is correct sway by activating the trailer brakes and it can be mounted almost anywhere along the trailer's tongue. The unit's going to activate the trailer brakes based on the degree of sway and the trailer speed.

To do this it's going to use two main components. It's going to have a solid state driver scope that senses sway and activates all the trailer brakes at the same time and it's going to use GPS that monitors the speed and determines the brake force needed to correct sway at that speed. The unit will not activate until the trailer reaches 45mph, this helps prevent unnecessary braking while making turns at slower speeds. To get the unit set up, it's a very simple design that's going to use a plug-and-play system that doesn't require any hard wiring. The unit's going to plug directly inline with your current setup. So the 7-way connector is going to plug into the Sway Master unit on this side.

It's got the nice plug right there, fully installed, built in. It's got the gasket on the underside of the lid to keep out moisture and dirt and the elements from the connection points. And then on this side we're going to have a harness that measures about 5 feet long. It's got the 7-way plug that's going to plug into the tow vehicle. Now the unit's going to feature parallel circuitry, which means that the unit will not interfere with normal braking or the signals on the vehicle from the brake controller, so it's going to be protected in that regard. The unit's also going to come with a plug holder that can be mounted to the trailer to keep the plug safe and secure when it's not hooked up to the tow vehicle.

So you would have this mounted to the trailer, when the plug's not being used, you simply put it into the plug holder. What that does is it keeps the unit off the ground, it keeps your connector safe and it also keeps the unit accessible for when you're ready to hook everything back up. It's going to come with the hardware to get the box installed on the trailer frame, as well as the hardware to get the plug holder installed at the mounting location. Now, this is going to give us a measurement of about 5" long. The height, top to bottom, is 2.5" distance between the mount holes right here, center on center is going to be about 4" and it's going to stick up about 2 3/16" from the mounting surface. The molded construction of the unit is water resistant and it's durable so it's going to do a great job of protecting all the internal components.

The unit's also going to feature a self-calibrating design so there's no need to set up or continually adjust the unit. Very simple and easy to use. Now, again, it does dome with the included screws to attach the unit to your A-frame trailer. The Sway Master can be placed almost anywhere along the framing or tongue of the trailer, so that way you can clear other equipment with instructions on the frame of your trailer. So, it's a really nice, easy to use design, it's lightweight, very easy to maneuver and get installed and it's got a nice tight seal right here that threads together from the connection from the vehicle to the Sway Master and then from the Sway Master to the trailer. Now, one of the things I want to mention is that you will know that the Sway Master is connected properly. There's going to be an indicator light on the unit that's going to flash three times and that light should continue to be illuminated as long as the power is--or as long as the unit's receiving power from the towed vehicle. Now this is designed for trailers with up to 4 axles or 8 brake assemblies. It's compatible with electric or electric over hydraulic brakes. A few measurements I want to go over with you real quick, regarding the Sway Master. If we take a measurement of the overall length of the unit, so I'm measuring from the front of the plug to this point right here where that connector kind of begins, overall length, so going from about this point here to about this point here, we're looking at a measurement pretty close to 9". If we take a measurement of the width, I'm measuring from this point right here to this point here, so that's going to give a measurement of about 3 3/4" wide. Overall height, that's going to be about 4 7/8" tall. Now when it comes to the dimensions of just the bracket right here, that's this back piece, that's going to give us an overall length measurement, that should be about 7 1/2". The overhang, which on top has two mount holes, that's going to give us a depth of about 1 5/8". And then from the underside of the overhang to the bottom of the unit's going to measure about 4 3/8". Again, the harness length is going to be about 5". I'm going to give you the separation of our mount holes. We have two here on top. These are going to be separated on center by pretty close to 3 3/8". Then we have a mount hole here and a mount hole right here. Those are going to be separated on center going on a straight line measurement of about 5 1/8". The product is made in the USA. Now, a note that I need to mention for you real quick is that in order for the GPS in the Sway Master to work properly, the top of the unit must be completely exposed to the sky. Other than insuring that the top is not covered and that the unit is pointing in the correct direction for hookup, there's no other mounting restrictions. And so, it's a low profile design, 4 mount holes total, and it comes with all the hardware needed to get the unit installed. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hays Sway Master Electronic Sway Control System. .

I've driven with the Hayes electronic sway control for a short distance(200 or so miles) thus far and it works great and makes pulling my Lance 1475 with my Ridgeline very stable at highway speeds. We will be heading out to Arizona in December and put it to a true test. I have dealt with etrailer on a number of products and I must say they have the best customer service and instructional videos of any merchant I've purchased from. 714845

This rating is for service and ease of installation. etrailer provided the best product description of all retailers handling this product, they also had the best price, and free shipping . etrailer does not make you pay an annual fee to get free fast shipping. As with all orders from etrailer the product arrived quickly, and I was given all information to track the order. This is important because i do not like packages siting on the front porch. I installed the sway control device in about 15 minutes. I did add a bungee cord to the plug, wrapped around the box so it will not pop out. We will be taking a 10000 mile trip and I will edit the review with how well the unit worked. My hopes are that I will never know if it is working or not. 633193

The Hayes Sway Control unit works very well. The first time I towed with it I took a turn a liitle too fast and the unit lightly tapped the trailer brakes to keep the trailer from swaying. I am very pleased with it and feel much safer when towing. 385481

It works great. One of the best RV related purchases I have made. We feel much safer towing with it.

This product works well to save your skin, but not before a few terrifying seconds. Company service was great, there was a recall several months after I bought it and they communicated well and sent a replacement unit quickly. It is super easy to install. We have towed about 10,000 miles with it on two Airstreams, a 19 and 23. The 19 seemed to have less sway and the unit activated on sharp turns on gravel which was a little annoying. Our recent trip to windy Arizona with a tandem axle was more scary. The unit kicks in when it detects significant sway. That is after sway starts. We thought we could get away with just that (towing with a VW Toureg with not so perfect for towing short wheelbase but plenty of power) without weight distribution and sway control, and we did with the single axle as noted. With the tandem the trailer moved around a lot more which was counterintuitive but the swaymaster kicked in as it is supposed to. But as I said, only after the sway scares you. Now we realize we need sway control so it does not have to but we are going to keep it connected as plan B. 628808

This is easily installed by the RVer. I did it in a few minutes. Use a punch to dimple your trailer tongue before drilling the holes for the included screws. This helps ensure the holes line up with the SwayMaster. I purchased it because of its plug-n-play simplicity. It's an inexpensive insurance policy against emergency sway situations. I also use a good weight-distributing-anti-sway hitch. We recently drove a twisty road in AZ at 50 mph (in control) and my truck's trailer-brake system showed that the trailer brakes activated so I believe the system does work as advertised. Otherwise it hasn't activated (no emergency sway situation) in about 5,000 miles of towing a 30 foot overall travel trailer. If you buy a unit, remember to unplug the trailer's seven-pin cord from the rear of the unit at your destination. If you don't it will continue to spin the gyroscope, applying unnecessary wear to it as well as drawing power from your trailer battery/batteries. 489305

I have added a rear TRD away bar and Timbrens to our 2016 Tundra, and tow with its tires near max pressure. I added Lippert Equaflex Equalizers to the rear axles, Provider 215 width load range D tires to replace the stock 205 E tires, which I run at the max pressure rating of 65 lbs. and the Hayes Swaymaster to our 2017 Coachmen Apex 250RLS. I use an Andersen weight distribution and away control hitch. All this is to minimize sway and the chance of a catastrophic sway event. Does our trailer tow well at the 65 mph speeds I do, for example when we towed last year to Arizona and back from Southern Ontario? Absolutely. Do I regret adding the well-priced and easily installed Sway-Master into my system of control over a year ago? Absolutely not.

bought a hayes electronic sway control for a bohemuth of a trailer I got. 30 foot trailer with a toy hauler measuring 26 feet long, 13 feet tall, weighing right at 14,000 pounds loaded with jeep inside. I don't run sway bars or weight distribution, partly because the sway control / weight distribution hitch I bought broke and put my trailer on the ground, lucky no damage done and I was able to stop trailer and truck safely. So until this purchase winds and driving at highway speeds was a task for sure even with a suitable tow vehicle because this trailer is like a big sail in the wind. So I mounted the hayes electronic sway system and it was a breeze, maybe 15 minutes max. I drove 3 hours in high winds to my destination and this system really works. sure I could feel the trailer moving around but it wasn't moving my truck around and the trailer was correcting itself without me having to get out of the gas. I did 65 to 75 mph the entire way and never once felt like I wasn't in control. winds were 25 mph plus that day. drove back in much less windy condition and couldn't even tell the trailer was back there for the majority of the drive. Love this hayes controller and the order and shipping with etrailer was flawless. I rarely buy things on-line, but this one was a good one. Neal 254335

Installed the Sway Master on an R-Pod 180 travel trailer. My tow vehicle was a class B RV 1998 Leisure Travel Van camper van (Dodge B3500) and towed the R-Pod over 13k miles. I do not use a weight distribution hitch, but instead use a Weigh-Safe Hitch to manage/maintain ideal tongue weight, between 400-450 lbs. Driving this combo, you have your good days, and then you have your bad days. The camper van is challenging in itself with wind, lane wander, and slip streams of passing semis, but with the R-Pod hitched up you now got your work cut out for you. I creep along in the slow lane (55-62mph) and keep my drive time low because always being on high alert is exhausting. This was no fun at all and decided to no longer use the camper van as my tow vehicle, so I bought a new tow vehicle, 2018 Chevy Express 3500 pass van. More than enough capability needed to tow the R-POD. Hitched the R-Pod to the Chevy van with Weigh-Safe Hitch and Sway Master. Trailer was pulled out from storage so it was winterized and empty, tongue weight was 250 lbs which is too light even for this trailer. So I expect many sway events. Went out for a 20 minute test drive on the interstate. The drive was fantastic with little to no sway from the trailer. Vehicles pass me and I would feel a slight tug from the trailer (same feel if you manually engaged your brake controller) and the trailer would follow true. The slight tug of the trailer is the only indicator you will have to know if the device was worked at a specific moment. I agree with a previous reviewer that a remote light in the cabin area to indicate if the device is working or not would be ideal. This device is fully automatic. Not having to focus one hand on steering straight while simultaneously reaching with the other hand for the brake controller during sway event is a huge relief. But this improved driving experience could also mean that I am driving a newer one ton vehicle and not a 21 year old camper van as before. In addition, Chevy also has built in Trailer Sway Control (TSC) with its Stabili-Trak system (controls vehicle to stop sway) and combine this with the Sway Master (controls trailer to stop sway) I am covered both ways. So even though I can feel the tug of the trailer during sway events, I am not sure if this is all due to the Sway Master. I suppose I can disengage the Stabili-Trak to eliminate it from the equation but did not during this test. So for a truer test I need to get the camper van out on the road. Hitch the R-Pod to the camper van, Weigh-Safe, and Sway Master and hit the same route. The tongue weight was 150 lbs (hitch ball was a notch too high but did not correct). The driving experience was night and day. Even with stupidly light tongue weight I was no longer being blown off the freeway by passing semis and cross-winds driving under over passes and bridges. Even the lane wandering that my camper van likes to do was nearly eliminated. There was one experience where I saw the trailer sway to the right but then straightened itself out before it motion was transferred to the camper van. That was a huge win! No more tail wagging the dog on this one. I am confident now that IF the camper van is to pull tow vehicle duty in the future I would not hesitate to do so with Sway Master. With proper tongue weight of course. Hitting the road now, will provide an update in the future. *etrailer Customer Service. OUTSTANDING! Apparently I received a bad Sway Master module as it was showing a short in the system with my Prodigy P2 brake controller. When I unpacked from the box the 7 pin cable assembly on the module was not fully tightened, so I hand tightened it before I installed on the trailer. I was receiving all kinds of flashing codes on the module itself (5 flash, pause, 5 flashes), and on my brake controller it was reading S.H, o.c, .c and then repeating itself. I presumed it may be a bad cable so I called etrailer on Saturday (5 mins before closing), tech returned my call on Sunday, replacement was sent on Monday, delivered on Wednesday, picked up on Thursday. Great Customer Service. Thanks etrailer. 605456

After encountering a situation which was beyond the ability of our Equal-i-zer hitch to correct--that being ice and a crosswind gusting to 40 mph, I wanted something to help prevent another accident. This seems to be the solution for which I was looking. I had thought that if I had been able to reach the manual brake control and activate the trailer brakes, it might have been enough to prevent us from what became a worsening sway culminating in us doing a 180 jackknife on Interstate 80 and facing the way from which we came. At the time, I did not have the third hand I would have needed to do this, nor did it come to mind in the middle of the situation. Enter the Hayes Sway-Master Electronic Sway Control. From what Hayes says, it would have been what was needed when we had that accident. I think it might have prevented the swaying from increasing from minor to major to accident. It would have detected the situation and applied the trailer brakes even faster than I could have reacted. However, we did not have it at the time. It is now installed. I took it out in a situation where we had wind gusting to 30 mph. I did not have the Equal-i-zer's bars on as I had removed a number of items from the trailer and it was not properly adjusted for the new tongue weight. I figured it would be a better test anyway since the bars would have acted to counter sway. This way, any sway control would be the result of the Hayes Sway-Master. I now tow a Forest River R-Pod 179 with a 2010 Nissan Frontier LE Crew Cab. While I could feel the wind pushing the R-Pod, I did not feel like it was about to lose control. I really don't know if the Hayes Sway-Master had to activate the brakes. While there was wind, there was no ice. I don't know if the wind by itself was causing enough sway for the unit to try to correct it. This leads me to the one negative I want to mention. There is no visual or audio indicator that the unit has applied the brakes to eliminate sway. One just can't tell easily what is happening. The blue status light on the unit is not visible from the tow vehicle, and it indicates power, not activity. It would be good if Hayes would make some sort of indicator that could be mounted where it would be visible to the driver or would be audible. That would earn the product that 5th star. One other item was not addressed in the instructions. That the unit needs to be disconnected from the tow vehicle while not being used is evident. What is not so much so is that the trailer's plug also needs to be disconnected so that the unit will not be a parasitic drain on the trailer's battery I asked about this when I noticed the blue light remains lit when the tow vehicle is disconnected. The answer is that both plugs should be disconnected. The instructions should address this. This was not enough to deduct from the rating, but the instructions should address this. A plus is the plug holder. I like that it keeps the plug off the ground. It would be nice to have a second one for the original trailer's plug to keep that off the ground also while the unit isn't being used. Perhaps a double plug-holder could be shipped instead of this single-plug holder. In spite of the lack of a video/audio indicator, I would recommend this. It is much less expensive than the deductibles I already have to pay for repairs on my car and trailer. If it will prevent something similar from happening, it will be well worth the price. 341223

In the time since I got the Sway-Master, I have felt it activate a few times when we encountered some particularly bad roads in Vermont. Other than that, it is just there as insurance as stated above. I believe it is worth it and stand by my previous review comments.

  • Comparing the Hayes, Tuson, and Lippert Electric Trailer Sway Control Systems
The Hayes Sway Master # HA81775 is definitely more of a plug and play system than either the Lippert Sway Command # LC380605 or the Tuson Electronic Sway Control System # 335TSC-1000. To help narrow down the decision much quicker the Lippert has restrictions on its use so we can cut that one out of the running (it is only compatible with up to 2 axles and won't work with 2014 or newer GM trucks and SUVs equipped with an integrated trailer brake control module). • Sway Control for Raised Tandem Axle Trailer that has Weight Distribution
Short of replacing the weight distribution you already have to one that includes sway control the Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control System # HA81775 is a great choice. Since it can be installed virtually anywhere on your trailer, and is so easy to install, it makes it extremely versatile. It uses a gyroscope to sense movement in the trailer and applies the trailer's brakes when necessary to keep it in line with your Jeep. It also uses GPS to detect your speed and determines how...

  • Mounting Hayes HA81772 Sway Master to Trailer Frame
According to my contact at Hayes, as long as the top of the unit isn't blocked and the unit is pointed in the correct direction so the trailer can be plugged into it, there aren't any mounting restrictions for the unit.

  • Can Hayes Sway Master be Used with Tuson DirecLink Trailer Brake Controller
Yes, the Hayes Sway Master # HA81775 referenced in your question is compatible with the Tuson DirecLink Base Model Trailer Brake Controller # 335DL-100. The Sway Master will just plug in line with the 7-Way connector on the trailer and won't affect operation of the Tuson brake controller at all. For this reason the Sway Master is really going to be compatible with just about any brake controller. This will give you a nice, safe setup with your tow vehicle and trailer to keep everything...

  • Compatibility of Hayes Sway Master with NuCamp 3,500 lb Trailer
The Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control System # HA81775 will help with sway by activating your trailer brakes side to side as needed. That will work just fine on your 3,500 lb trailer. Your air suspension should help with the load leveling of your truck cargo, so you should be good to go. If you experience rear sag on your truck when towing, then you would want to consider weight distribution and a more mechanical sway control. I would have recommended using the Strait-Line...

  • Can Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control Be Attached To Trailer With C-Clamp
The Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control, part # HA81775, has a gyroscope in the module so you will have to make sure it is very well secured in place so that it does not vibrate. I called my contact at Hayes and they said if you can secure it with a c-clamp and additional straps and keep it from moving when attached it should work just fine.

  • Can Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control Attach to Jack-It Bike Rack
The Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control System # HA81775 does need to be mounted so its top is completely open to the sky. And while technically you could mount it to the Jack-It 2 Bike Rack for A-Frame Trailers # LC429756, I do not recommend it. I'm not 100% sure how you would get it to attach and the integrity of the bike rack could be compromised, and the warranty would also be voided. I recommend a different system, the Tuson Electronic Sway Control System for Electric Trailer...

  • Will Hayes SwayMaster Help Prevent Sway on Trailer Towed by Several Vehicles
The Hayes Sway Master part # HA81775 would be a really great solution for your scenario. This will do a really great job automatically stopping the sway caused by high winds and passing semis while on the highway. Since it installs on the trailer it will easily transfer and work with any vehicle you use to tow it with. If you find that the trailer has persistent sway at a certain speed that would be a loading issue and means your trailer does not have quite enough tongue weight.

  • Are Anti-Way Bars Recommended to Be Used with the Hayes Sway Master Electric Sway Control System?
The Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control System - 1 to 4 Axles # HA81775 does not need any other anti-sway system to work properly. The system is designed to be used independently and uses an integrated gyroscope and gps monitor for sway and speed. It will apply electric braking as needed on your trailer to control sway and keep your trailer in line with your vehicle. You may use it in conjunction with a friction sway bar like # 17200 or a weight distribution system with integrated...

  • Why is a Weight Distribution System Not Recommended on a 2018 Land Rover Discovery
The 2018 Land Rover Discover has an integrated air system that is designed for trailer stability so they recommend not using the Weight Distribution hitches because their integrated system is designed to help with vehicle sag. You can use your current weight distribution shank and head without the spring/sway bars if desired. That is what I'd do and save the additional cost. If you end up having some sway issues because you aren't able to use your weight distribution system with...

  • Electronic Sway Control For 2016 Ram 1500 Towing Aluminum Motorcycle Trailer
Adding a weight distribution system will put the bottom of the system about 5 or 6 inches below the ball mount on your 2016 Ram 1500. I know that is what you are trying to avoid but ground clearance will be limited regardless of what system you use. You will need to check with the trailer manufacturer to see if a weight distribution system can be used with your trailer. There may be another solution for you though. Take a look at the Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control System...

  • Compatibility of Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control With Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller
The Curt Echo Brake Controller # C51180 is compatible with the Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control System # HA81775. The brake controller will give the brake output the unit needs as well as the pass through of the 12V power needed for the electronic sway control unit. This combination is an easy to install and easy to use combination for trailers with up to 4 electric brake assemblies. It will be simply plug and play.

  • How to Add Sway Control to Karavan Snowmobile Trailer with Straight Pole Tongue
Since your snowmobile trailer features a straight pole tongue, your options for sway control are a bit different than those for standard campers, however we absolutely have some solutions for you. When you reach highway speeds with a trailer like this, side-to-side movement isn't too uncommon. You could try re-distributing weight inside the trailer (more weight up towards the front) if possible, but to really reduce sway a separate system is likely needed. If your trailer is equipped...

  • Recommended Anti Trailer Sway Device for a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas
It would be a great idea to use an anti-sway system with your 2018 Volkswagen Atlas and small single axle travel trailer. The smaller single axle trailers are actually more prone to sway than the larger tandem and triple axle trailers due to the lack of tongue weight. There are two styles of anti-sway control, friction and electric. The owner's manual for your Atlas restricts the use of most friction sway control devices so your best option will be an electric anti-sway device. I recommend...

  • Is There an Advantage To Using a Weight Distribution Hitch Over Stand Alone Sway Control
I can see how this might be a confusing choice of words. I've seen instances where people have used both a weight distribution hitch with sway control AND the Hayes Sway Master in order to create a "super" sway control system to keep their trailer in line behind their tow vehicle. With that being said, which one you choose typically comes down to whether or not you really need a weight distribution system or can get away with simply having sway control. Weight distribution hitches are...

  • Recommended Sway Control for a 1,390 lb ProLite S Trailer
If you are anticipating high wind situations when towing your 1,390 lb ProLite Plus S trailer then adding a sway control system to your towing rig is a really good idea. Typically we recommend using a weight distribution (WD) system that has integrated sway control if your trailer weight is at least half of the weight of your towing vehicle. Since this trailer is pretty light though a WD system may not be necessary. We do have stand-alone sway control units available that install directly...
