Video Transcript for Fulton Safety Chains and Cables 49135 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Fulton Threaded Quick Link. This is a sturdy link that's going to provide a quick link for chains, cables, ropes or straps. It's got the threaded keeper right here that just screws shut. No tools required. Very easy to open and close the unit. Now, if you would like to use a wrench to tighten or loosen, you can do that.

A 3 1/4 inch wrench or a 19mm would work well for this unit. It's made from a steel construction. It's very strong and durable. It's going to have a zinc coating which is going to do a great job at resisting rust and corrosion. It's going to offer a max capacity of 10,000lbs.

Then, engraved right here on the link, it says WLL3330lbs, that's the working load limit. The diameter of the actual link is going to be 1/2 of an inch. If we take a measurement of the opening right here, we can see that that's going to measure about 1/2 of an inch or 9/16 right in that area. Now, the threaded potion, right here, has a slightly larger diameter than the actual link. Again, the link has a diameter of a 1/2 inch, the threaded portion, right here, has a diameter of about 9/16 of an inch. A few other measurements to go over with you real quick. We're going to take a look at the internal and external measurements.

If we measure internally, just the space available inside the link, we're looking at about 3 1/4. If we go below the barrel first, that's going to give us a usable space of about 7/8 of an inch. If we measure to the flat side of that barrel, again internal, we're looking at about 3/4 of an inch. Now, the external measurements, starting with the overall length, that's going to measure about 4 1/4. If we go width, if we take a look at the width of the outside of the barrel, overall about 2 inches outside to outside. That's going to do it for today's look at the Fulton Threaded Quick Link..

After one year item 49135 (I have 2 of them) safety chain quick links are as good as they were new. Very satisfied. I use them with my 40' fifth wheel trailer to connect safety chains to a gooseneck adaptor which requires safety chains. 603115

The only thing better then my new safety chain quick link is etrailer's customer service. The mailman delivered my package to the wrong house and eTrailer quickly sent out a replace part! Now I can quickly hook up my RV safety chains using the safety chain quick link. Thanks etrailer for the great customer service! 168138

This Safety Chain Quick link is the only item I have found that will work on a 2500 HD Silverado truck. However, the description is a little misleading. It say 10,000 pound capacity! But it notes only rated for 3300! So why even post that it is a 10k link when it is not able to use as such. 352242

Good product, well made, but will not solve my problem with the late model Chevy / GMC hitch. I thought by the description it would pass through the two safety chain holes on each side of the hitch. The spacing of the holes will not accept some hooks on the end of the trailer safety chains. Thought this would solve the problem but these also will not pass through both holes. I'm using two 12 inch long sections of chain, one through each side, but doubt this will impress the DOT. 439463

Jena at E-Trailer guided me to this product to work with my factory 2013 Tundra hitch which has oddly shaped, misplaced safety chain slots, in my opinion. Adds a little length, movement, much easier attachment to and from. Rated above my 8,000 lb hitch. Thank you. 176421

Product is exactly as described. Ordering was easy and shipping was fast. I am using these to extend the chains on our trailer lift gate so the end of the gate will set on the ground. 466749

Exactly what I was looking for. My new F150 has the hitch tucked up quite a bit. It was a major pain to get my hooks on there when hooking up my TT. These making hooking up a breeze. They are a lot bigger and tougher looking than I thought though. Which is good I guess. 406131

I bought these to hook up the safety chains from our 10,000 lb travel trailer to our class 5 receiver on our truck. They are excellent quality and perform nicely. They screw on and off easily. I highly recommend them. 621822

Product worked and fit as described, they solved the issue on my 2018 Chevy Silverado 3500. I recommend this product. Noah was a big help, awesome customer service. I will definitely keep coming back to etrailer.com for any future needs. 512989

As with many other reviewers, I was looking for a solution that would make hooking my safety chains easier. Due to the design of my factory (F150) hitch, the chains were barely long enough and nearly impossible to get the spring clips fastened and unfastened. These heavy duty links were just the ticket. They are rated to exceed the towing capacity of my truck so I don't expect any issues. 254783

Comments
The links have met or exceeded my expectations, allowing me to easily attach my safety chains. Only down side was that I had to shorten the chains by a link or two in order to keep them from dragging on the ground. That was a tradeoff I willingly made.

  • Solution for Attaching Safety Chains to Loops on 2018 Ford Truck Factory Hitch
You are not the first customer to have issues with the safety chain hooks on the OEM trailer hitch for your 2018 Ford truck. Using a quick link like the Fulton # 49135 that you referenced might be a good option, as long as the gap on the link is large enough to fit around the loops. When opened, the Quick Link has a gap that measures 9/16 of an inch and the inside length is 3-1/4 inches. I have attached a couple images to clarify these dimensions. If this is not large enough, another...

  • Recommended Safety Chain Quick Link Rated for 10,000 lb Break Strength
The Fulton Safety Chain Quick Link, 1/2" 10K # 49135 have the 10,000 lbs break strength and 3,300 lbs working load limit but are not available in stainless steel. They are zinc coated to prevent corrosion. The Quick Link I recommend is the Blue Ox 1/2" Quick Link for Safety Chains # BX229-0512 which is also zinc plated to prevent corrosion and have that 10,000 lb capacity. Blue Ox is well known for safety cables and links as they specialize in the flat towing market

  • Can Quick Links be Used to Attach Safety Chains to Trailer
When using safety chains, each component, including the quick links, must meet or exceed the GVWR of your trailer. So if you used a pair of safety chains that were rated for 12,000 lbs - to meet the 24,000 lb GVWR of your trailer - you would need to use quick links that were also rated for 12,000 lbs. The highest-rated quick links we carry are the Safety Chain Quick Link # 49135 which is rated for 10,000 lbs and would not be enough for your 24,000 lb trailer. If you are unable to find...

  • Attaching Safety Chains to a 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty with New Safety Chain Design
From the picture that you sent me it looks like you could possibly use a quick link like part # 49135 and leave it connected for easy access to hook up your safety chains when towing. The Fulton Safety Chains Quick Link # 49135 is a 1/2" link that is rated for up to 10,000 lbs Break Strength and 3,300 lbs Safe Working Lead Limit. This would be a great option for your situation and would make connecting and disconnecting your safety chains much easier. You can verify if this will fit...

  • Safety Chain Hook Recommendation for a Hitch with Large Safety Chain Hoops
Due to the thickness of the safety chain loops on your hitch your best option would be to go with a hook and keeper setup like the part # 1483-535-04. I attached a picture that shows the size of the opening on the hook. For just the hook you would want the part # 6495-401-04.

  • Weight Limit for the Safety Chain Quick Link part # 49135
The capacity of 10k lbs that the Safety Chain Quick Link part # 49135 that you referenced has is the capacity relative to it's use as safety chain component. Basically, the quick link actually has a 10k capacity and would work well for you since your trailer weighs about 7,000 lbs.

  • Trailer Safety Chain and Quick Link Recommendation for Trailer
The quick link part # 49135 that you referenced has a 10k capacity as it's max capacity and a 3,300 working load limit. The working load limit would be if the chains was to see that capacity at all times. For a set of chains then to go with that you could use the part # 1483-535-04. These have a 5,400 lb working load limit.

  • Could Fulton Quick Link # 49135 Fit Factory Hitch of 2018 GMC Sierra 2500
Since we haven't had the chance to test fit the # 49135 on a 2018 GMC Sierra factory hitch like what you have it's pretty hard to say for certain. The best we can do is have you check out the two dimension pictures I attached for this that show the opening dimensions so that you can compare them to your hitch to see if they'll fit.

  • Compatibility of 1/2 Inch Safety Chain Quick Link w/ 24 Foot 6000 lb Coachman Travel Trailer
Since the working load limit (WLL) of the # 49135 Quick Link is 3300 lbs, using two of them would provide a 6600 lb capacity, which would be fine for your 6000 lb trailer. I've provided a photo showing the quick links being used for just this purpose.

  • Replacement Safety Chain Recommendation for Horse Trailer with Chains that are Too Short
I went out to the warehouse and pulled safety chain quick link # 49135 to measure for you. With the nut fully opened the opening is just over 1/2 an inch (0.52 inches). If you can fit the opening over you current safety chains they should work well as these have a 10k capacity each. A better solution would be to replace your current safety chains with something like the part # 49150 as this is a 44 inch safety chain kit with a 16k capacity. Or for a 35 inch chain part # 1483-535-04.

The Safety Chain Quick Link # 49135 that you referenced has an opening of about 9/16" as you can see from the attached photo. If you check out the attached review video at about the 0:45 mark you can see this measurement being taken.

  • What is the Preferred Method of Connecting Safety Chains from a Trailer to a Trailer Hitch
Provided that you have safety chains rated as high or higher than the hitch capacity and they are securely connected to the safety chain loops on the trailer hitch, how you route them is not really an issue. You just do not want them to bind up (get wrapped around anything when making turns) as that could cause damage. So what most people do is have some sort of loop, like # 49135, connected to the trailer and then have the chains connected to it. The chains are then connected straight...

  • How Does the Difference of Working Load Limit and Maximum Capacity Apply for Fulton Quick Links
The Working Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum working load designed by the manufacturer. The maximum capacity is the highest load the product can support. So, for your application (flat towing) the WLL really won't apply since there is no working load. The safety cables aren't working, unless there's a problem. The Fulton Quick Links # 49135, being rated for 10,000 pounds, is the strongest we carry and has got nothing but great reviews from the customers who have purchased them.

  • Quick Link Needed with Opening Wider than 1/2"
The only quick link that we have which may work for your application is the Fulton 10K # 49135 but the opening is only 9/16" so I'm not sure how much of a difference that extra 1/16" will make. Aside from that everything else we have is either too small or not rated high enough.

  • Safe Working Load Limit vs Break Strength Rating for Quick Links
Great questions! The safe working load limit that you see on products like the Safety Chain Quick Link # 49135 has to do with everyday use. So if you were to use this quick link to regularly pull something Fulton doesn't recommend exceeding 3,300 lbs (6,600 lbs for 2 of them). Since you're looking to use these for your trailer safety chains you need to be looking at the break strength or capacity. With a break strength of 10,000 lbs you are well over the weight of your 4,300 lb loaded...

  • Quick Link Recommendation for 7,700 lb Safety Chain Application
The quick link part # 49135 has two ratings. 3,300 lbs where it is safe to be used at all the time without fatiguing it and the break strength which is 10k. Two of these would be good for 6,600 in a safe load limit. For a safety chain situation where it's going to be all the capacity at once plus some inertia I'd not recommend them. The part # BX88197 is a similar 1/2 inch diameter link that is designed for use with 10k safety cables so it would be the better option.

  • Weight Capacity Explained for Safety Chain Quick Link # 49135
A safety chain's working load limit (WLL) is always 1/3 of the chain's break strength and it is the limit you want to stay within in normal use. The part # 49135 has a break capacity of 10,000 lbs and a working load limit of 3,300 lbs. This means If you were planning to secure something that weighs 3,300 lbs this would be ideal. And it would hold it well till the force exerted on it exceeded 10,000 lbs.

Worst case scenario you can cut a chain's quick link to remove it. I'd recommend using a cutting wheel on rotary tool as that would make the job as easy as possible. I am not sure exactly what size you'd need as a replacement but for a 10k quick link we have the part # 49135.

This quick link has a 10,000 lb weight capacity so it will not limited the capacity of your safety chains. If you are needing a quick connect for a different application then I recommend the Safety Chain Quick Link # 49135 which is rated for 10,000 lbs and has a 3,300 lb safe working load limit.
