Video Transcript for Ultimate Overview of the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit

Hey everyone, I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. And today we're going to be taking a look at the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit. This is going to be for the right-hand side, or your passenger side, on your trailer. The reason why you'd want to replace the whole drum brake on your assembly is to make sure that everything's going to be wearing the same. That way you don't have to worry about your brake shoes failing before any of your other components in your kit, you don't have to get in there and do maintenance six months down the road. It's all going to be fresh, and new, and ready to go.

And while you're at it, it's not a bad idea to also get the left-hand brake assembly, so that you're doing this install all at once. That way, you got your trailer up in the air, you're taking off the wheels, and you can just do both sides right while you're at it. You got all the tools out, might as well do them both.And if you've got multiple axles on your trailer, might not be a bad idea to do all four sides, or all four assemblies. It's up to you, though, but that would definitely be my recommendation. Again, just to make sure that everything's wearing the same, you're getting that same amount of braking force out of all of those wheels and keeps you safe while you're out on the road.

This is designed to work with your surge-type brake actuator. We're going to have this dual plunger design that is going to deliver the equal amount of pressure, or braking force, whenever we're driving, either in forward or reverse. So it should have that good amount of braking force there. To lubricate the system, we'll have this pre-circuit the back. You can also adjust the braking force by this little dial here at the bottom.You just adjust that with a screwdriver or a brake spoon to get the proper amount of force going out on your hub assembly.

You always want to adjust that when you initially get this installed to make sure that you're getting a good amount of drag, but not so much that those brakes are locking up too quickly. You can see up at the top, we'll have a chamfered edge to that brake shoe. That helps to reduce any kind of chattering or noise as the brakes engage. Eventually, that will wear down a bit, but it's going to be a lot smoother than just a straight cut assembly up at the top. As far as the measurements with this, it is going to be a 12-1/4 inch diameter and a 3-3/8 inch width.
