Video Transcript for Let’s Check Out the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12-inch right hand passenger side hydraulic drum brake assembly for up to 7,000 pound axles. Hydraulic drum brake assemblies are designed for use with surge type trailer brake actuators. This one happens to be a Dual Servo design. You can see it has the dual plungers on it. This will deliver the same amount of braking when driving either forward or in reverse. Now, this is a manual adjustment brake.

Right down here is your adjustment gear to adjust your brakes. It does require periodic manual adjustment. What also is nice is if you notice there's an adjuster plug here that covers that access hole. The access hole is where you'll put your tool through when you adjust your brakes, so when you're done you can put this rubber plug back in or this will cover that hole to keep any dirt or grime out of your assembly and off your brake shoes. This is the right hand passenger side brake assembly. It comes with the five mounting lock washer nuts to install it.

Now, on the 12-inch size brake assemblies, the bolts are already installed on the brake mounting flange on your axle, so all it requires is the nut with the washers. A few specs on this, the dimension is 12 inches diameter by two inches wide, and what that measurement is, the 12-inch diameter would be measured from this brake shoe all the way across to this brake shoe, so if we put our ruler on it, there's your 12-inch diameter. The two-inch wide would be the width of the brake pad on the shoe. There's your two-inch wide. It does require a brake mounting flange bolt pattern of five bolts, you can see right here, and it does require the use of 12-inch brake drums. It does use a wheel size of 14 1/2 inches, 15 inches or 16 inches, and again, it is designed for axles rated up to 7,000 pounds.

The last thing I just want to show you is how to tell if it's a right hand or left hand assembly. Now, on a new brake assembly it'll have a sticker, so you'll know by that, but if the sticker wasn't on there just look at the length of the pad on the brake shoes. This pad goes from here to here. This one goes from here to here, so this is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is the primary shoe.
