Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Suspension - Leaf Spring Suspension - K71-384-00 Review

Male Speaker: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Dexter trailer springs over/under conversion kit. This conversion kit is designed to fit 2-3/8 inch diameter axles. It's going to allow you to move the trailer release springs to the top of the axle without having to change the correct orientation of the axle. This is going to help with leveling your trailer. It's going to help wheel well clearance, and it also adds some height to prevent dragging, dipping, and bottoming out. One kit is going to come with enough components for one axle, so one kit per axle.

This is designed for use with double-eye springs only. The unit's going to include two spring seats. These are going to sit on top of your axle. It's going to come with eight nuts. It's going to come with four u-bolts. Two tie-down plates, the tie-down plates sit on top of your release springs once you have them moved to the top of the axle.

It's got the holes in it, that way the u-bolts can wrap around the axle and come up through the plate. You can secure it by installing the included nuts. It's going to come with the spacer nuts. These are going to allow the setup to install level. Basically, you would have one spring seat on top of the axle, then your old spring seat would still be under the axle. The spacer nut is going to fill that gap between the two spring seats.

You would place this on until it makes contact with the bottom spring seat. Then what you would need to do, which is highly recommended from the manufacturer, is tack weld this to the axle. That's the only welding that's required, or highly recommended, that you tack weld this to the axle. Then you can finish the tightening process or any minimal adjustments simply using a wrench. The u-bolt length on the unit is going to measure 5-1/8th of an inch. Everything that you see here on the table is included.

It's also going to come with some detailed installation instructions to help with the installation process. This is a bolt on installation, but again because there is a little bit of highly recommended tack welding that needs to take place, we can't say that it's a fully bolt on installation. Overall, it's a nice unit. We're looking at all steel components, and it's going to last a long time. This is going to allow you to move the trailer release springs to the top of the axle without having to change the correct orientation of your axle. This is really going to come in handy when it comes to leveling the trailer, gaining some extra wheel well clearance, and trying to add some clearance to prevent those situations where you may be dragging, dipping, or bottoming out. That's going to do it for today's look at the Dexter trailer springs over-under conversion kit.

We have order from etrailer before and had no issues with this type of kit. This time a few parts were missing in our axle kit. We contacted Becky on a Saturday and she promised to work with the manufacturer of the kit first thing Monday to resolve the issue, and she did. The parts shipped Monday and we received them the next day!! This allowed us to finish the installation on time for going out of town. Awesome customer service!! Thank you and God bless 711478

Great product. Nice quality. I put on a 2004 Starcraft pop up. The only thing I'd suggest is more pictures in the instructions or a video would be nice, regarding how the spacer bolts are placed, etc. I figured it out, but needed to Youtube to make sure a couple times. 511608

I gave a 5 star even though there were Dingle berries on the radius cut outs. They chipped off easy enough, but I used to weld for a living. Also I used my old spring plate along with yours so that the spring was sandwiched between them. That way the radius on the plate still worked with the spring. Everything fit great and was as simple as could be. Great product and I could not make them cheaper or better. 637450

High quality product. Straight toward install and has held up very well. Installed in a driveway in a few hours. I installed this kit on my 1974 komfort camper last year and have put highway and dirt road miles on it since. I take it elk hunting and get into some tight rough situations and haven't had any issues. It gave the camper just the right amount of clearance and it pulls level behind my Tundra with a curt anti sway stabilizer hitch. Before this kit my campers ground clearance was awful and I was always worried about puncturing my holding tank. This product fixed that problem. 495328

All parts are in box. I watched a few videos and it actually went really well. Instead of tacking I put a full weld on. Raised my camper a solid 6 to 8 inches. People complain about the u bolts being smaller but the u bolts no longer support the weight and the need for larger bolts no longer exist when putting the axle under the spring vs above. Very satisfied. Took 5 hours including lunch break and painting. 657328

This kit does exactly what it advertises. Gave me 4 1/2 in of lift. It is very straightforward to install. The only difficult part was getting the trailer up on jack stands. Make sure you do it on level ground, it makes jacking it much easier. I also had an issue with not having enough spacer nuts. I actually bought two kits and both only had 2 nuts and 4 are needed. There is no packing list so use the picture in the etrailer ad. etrailer was great about making it right. 508670

Had to do some minor mods to install these on my travel trailer, but seeing as we were going to weld them in place all was good! Made it real easy to get things set up correctly. Great product! 526838

Much nicer having the trailer up in the air a bit. The spring over conversion is one of the best mods I have done to the trailer and I highly recommend this kit...still 5 stars.

Great product!! Worked perfectly on my 2015 KZ Sportsmen Classic 16 BH. Before lift body @ 18" and top of wheel well @ 26.5" After lift body @ 23" and top of wheel well @ 31.5" Easy conversion with a little elbow grease. I did weld as suggested. 520734

I ordered this kit to keep my 19' Coleman tent trailer from dragging the rear bumper on direveway approaches. Install was super simple, finished everything in about 40 minutes. I gained about 5 inches of added height. I chose to not tack weld the perches in case the next owner doesn't like the height. No problems with a few thousand miles of rough roads. Highly recommended. 256979

I rated this product five stars simply because of the service I got. I wrongly measured my axle and the product would not work for me which was no fault of the product or the company. When I ordered the product they did not have it in stock and I paid extra for two day delivery. I received an email explaining their lack of the product. Before I could contact them for a solution they called me. The lady on the phone was very apologetic, she refunded me my extra money paid for two day delivery and assured me the latest they would be shipping me the product was in four days. Turned out they must have got the product in earlier and they shipped the product overnight and I had the product in four days. Excellent service!! 491646

The Dexter trailer spring under kit is very simple to install, installed this along with the Dexter heavy duty shackle kit. The kit came with all the required hardware and included instructions. The quality of the hardware was a step above that which came on the trailer when it was purchased. The Dexter spring under kit along with the the Dexter heavy duty shackle kit provided approximately 5" of lift on each corner of the trailer. 465498

Kit arrived well packaged. Surprisingly quick to install on my 6x12 enclosed utility trailer. Using an air impact wrench to remove all the nuts from the old setup made for quick work. The instructions recommend removing one of the spring shackle bolts on both sides, but I found this unnecessary. I only removed the U bolts, then shifted the axle to the side until I could drop it under the spring, and then repeated on the other side. New U bolts and plates went on easily. I highly recommend this kit if the goal is added approach and departure clearance. Observations: 1) This kit raised the trailer 5 inches. Made a huge difference. 2) The instructions mention changing / adding bump stops to prevent spring damage from over-flexure. A little research points to 2.5 inches for maximum allowable axle travel, so I still have to source / fab ~4 inch tall bump stops (would be nice to have this all orderable from etrailer) 3) I am going to have the new spring seats welded to the axle tube as recommended, but only because I run brakes on this trailer and want to make sure the seats could handle the added torque of emergency braking. 88832

I was a bit hesitant about flipping my axle, but I was tired of dragging the rear every time I pulled out or into a drive. The instruction "SUGGEST" welding the spring perches. I would suggest that be mandatory, especially on a drop axle like mine. I watched the video on how to install this and threw the instructions away. It was just that easy to install. The hardest part was dragging the axle out to the welder. If you need a few extra inches of height, I would strongly suggest flipping your axle with these. The parts were not cheap stuff and after I got them installed they worked great. 394944

I installed this over a year ago and it resolved the issue with the fenders rubbing the tire. I haul a 4 seater razor. There is no trailer sway and it tows great. A great buy.

I've been a long time customer of etrailer.com and have been very happy with their excellent customer service and prompt shipping. This review in no way reflects on etrailer.com but is focused on the product K71-384-00 from Dexter Axle. The kit arrived well packaged and in the original Dexter box. However, upon examining the contents, it was apparent the parts had been used before. The instruction sheet was badly soiled and torn. There were scratches on the tie plates and the small parts bag had been torn open. The more critical concern is that the u-bolts were a smaller gauge than my existing u-bolts. The tie plates were a bit narrower as well. In my opinion, the only useful parts out of this kit are the two spring seats and the four coupler nuts that go with them. My existing u-bolts are the same length as the Dexter kit's u-bolts but the gauge is slightly larger. So, I will use my existing u-bolts, nuts, and tie plates as they should be stronger. I believe Dexter should offer a kit with only the spring seats and coupler nuts. This would save the customer the unneeded expense of paying for parts that are not necessary. I scanned the etrailer.com web site but could not find such a product available. 384133

It took me 1.5 hours from start to finish, including clean-up, to install this kit. The instructions were simple and easy to follow, but remove the old u-bolts, plates and nuts - reassemble immediately for a reference of how the new bolts and plates go on (just upside down instead). I got a 5" lift as a result of using this kit. Currently, I am only using the nuts and spacing bolts but plan on getting the spring seats welded at some point. etrailer.com delivered them quickly, with great communication throughout the process. 55600

Ridicules ! I made this purchase with the hopes that all would be well. Once the item arrived I was met with a box that had been previously been open and I was missing parts of course! Called customer service and was promptly told that the items would be shipped next day! Well when I followed up withe trailer the next day, I was told that it would be over a month before I got the hardware to complete my job! Well that was ridicules, right? Here I am with my utility trailer taken apart in my driveway and told that I would have to wait a month, wrong! So I had to drive around looking for the hardware to complete me job, pay 20 bucks out of my pocket so I would not have to wait a month. So to you etrailer NEVER AGAIN! 510086

This over-under conversion kit worked out great for my 5th wheel trailer to meet up with my truck height. The kit got here quick, I already had the trailer ready for the conversion kit to be installed when it arrived, so all I had to do is put the axles underneath the springs and assemble the kit together to the trailer according to its instructions, and this really made a difference, now my 5th wheel trailer is at the height it needs to be with my truck and it now clears the bed sides of the truck a whole lot better for traveling. Thank You, etrailer 597251

Very easy to install , took me two hours from start to finish , I welded the new spring perch onto the axle instead of using only the rod coupling spacer , I thought it would be stronger . Camper was too low when I backed it up my hill at the house , this gives me 4 1/2 inched more clearance .Very pleased with the kit , and the service or E trailer !!!! 547546

We take our 20 foot camper trailer dry camping and the clearance has been marginal for the roads we go on. The main problem has been that the black/gray water outlets hang about 8" above the ground and are easy targets for rocks and ruts. We got the Dexter Over-Under conversion kit to provide a bit more clearance. As others point out, it installs quickly even for non mechanical types like me. I got it done in an afternoon. The pictures provided by e-trailer are invaluable. Also invaluable was a handy man jack. The only problem I encountered is that the spring bolts did not come out easily. Turns out that for my trailer they are press-fit and need a bit of hammering. I got about 5" of additional ground clearance. 221096

My trailer would drag leaving and entering our driveway. I gained five inches of clearance at the rear bumper and could not be happier with the results. I might have to add a second step at the door but that is much better than ripping of a stabilizer jack at the rear of the trailer. 555744

  • Adding Lift to 3,500 lb Trailer Axle
It's not a stupid question, it's a perfectly logical one but you should not flip the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with 4" Drop E-Z Lube Spindles # 7685269 to get rise as this was not the intended design as it is an underslung axle with spring seats that are intended to be on the underside of the axle. There is a way to add lift to a 3,500 lb axle such as the straight Dexter Trailer Axle Beam # 7359765. What you would use is called an over/under kit, which is commonly referred to as flipping...

The Dexter Torflex axles feature a torsion arm type suspension and attaches directly to the trailer frame. You will first want to make sure this is the type of axle you have on your trailer. We do not generally recommend using a spacer block because it can cause the trailer to bounce more and its suspension to wear out more quickly. • Should I Use Leaf Spring Spacers Lift Blocks on a Trailer to Raise It
I do not recommend using a leaf spring spacer (lift block) on your trailer. The reason for this is because they can cause the trailer to become extremely bouncy and rough which is just going to put more stress on your suspension and wear out the trailer faster. Instead, I recommend using an axle flip kit so long as your axle is over the leaf spring pack. If so then you can use part # K71-384-00 if you have a 2-3/8" diameter axle or part # K71-385-00 if you have a 3" diameter axle. This...

  • Recommended Axle Lift Kit for Little Guy 5 Trailer
To lift your Little Guy 5 trailer, you will want to use the Dexter Axle Torflex Lift Kit - Single Axle # K71-707-01. This will lift your axle to give you an additional 2-5/8 inches of ground clearance on your trailer.

  • Can 2016 Airstream Bambi be Lifted?
Your 2016 Airstream Bambi can be lifted depending on the axle it has. If it has a #9 Torflex axle with a 2,000-lb capacity you would need Torflex Lift Kit # K71-723-01 and if it has a #10 Torflex axle with a 2,300 lb to 4,000 lb capacity you would use Torflex Lift Kit # K71-707-01; both of these kits will lift your trailer 2-5/8". Please note that these lift kits are not compatible with top-mounted torsion axles. The other option for you is not technically a lift kit, but what is called...

  • Recommendation for Over Under Kit to Flip the Trailer Axle Under the Leaf Springs and Raise Trailer
When you flip your axles using the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00 for 3 inch axles or # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8 inch axles, the other measurements do not change. You simply gain the height of the axle diameter plus the leaf spring stacked spring height at the axle. All of your springs, shackle straps, and hangers stay the exact same. If you choose to replace those parts, you will want to replace them with the same length and capacity parts. I see you...

  • Trailer Suspension Lift Kit for 2004 Starcraft Centennial 3600 with Single Torsion Axle
A pop-up camper trailer like your 2004 Starcraft Centennial 3600 will have either a leaf spring suspension, a torsion axle suspension or if it was modified by a previous owner it could have a Timbren axle-less suspension kit like # A35RS545. Torsion axles do connect directly to a trailer frame and their rubber cord "springs" are internal, inside the axle tube. Chances are this is what you have if you don't see any leaf springs. We do have lift kits # K71-384-00 and # K71-385-00 for...

  • Recommended Parts for Rebuild/Upgrade of Harbor Freight Trailer
The Dexter Trailer Idler Axle w/ Hubs - EZ-Lube - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 60" Long - 2,200 lbs # 20545I-EZ-60-15 is a great starting point to upgrade your trailer. This will give you a standard size axle with good bearings, hubs, and EZ-lube spindles. This is far nicer than the weird sized stuff that comes on Harbor Freight trailers. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM31994 will be a great addition to these hubs...

  • Recommendations for Lifting Travel Trailer About 3 Inches
To raise your travel trailer about 3 inches, your best option is to use an over under kit like # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8 inch diameter axle or # K71-385-00 for a 3 inch axle. These kits will convert your axle and suspension so the axle will be under the leaf springs so it will raise your trailer the diameter of your axle plus the height of your leaf spring stack. Another option is the Lippert Components Center Point by Trailair Air-Ride Suspension Upgrade - Tandem Axle # LC1565391 which...

  • Can Longer Shackle Straps be Used to Raise Trailer for Larger Tires
I do have a couple possible solutions for raising your pontoon trailer, however increasing the shackle strap size will not be your best option. A more efficient way for raising the suspension on the trailer will be to use longer hangers. Unlike increasing the length of the shackle straps, using taller hangers will give you a lift on both sides of where the axle mounts. I have attached a link that will take you to our available selection of hangers that you can look through. Another...
