Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes - Replacement Magnet - BP01-225

Jeff Hello everybody, this is Jeff @etrailer.com. Today I'm gonna take a look at this replacement trailer, brake magnet for the Dexter axle, 4,400 pound and 7,000 pound electric brake assemblies. Now this magnet will allow you to replace the worn out magnet on your Dexter trailer brakes. And what's nice is, just by changing the magnet only, it'll save you money and time because it's better than replacing the whole entire brake assembly. You can see this magnet is a nice oval design. So it does include the, or it does increase the efficiency of the magnet, helps extend the life of the magnet.

If you notice the wires that come out of the magnet, they have this nice sharp, protective sleeve here on it. And the reason they do that is 'cause when this is installed on your brake assembly, this portion of the wire goes through the backing plate, and you want to make sure that the wire is protected so it doesn't rub against the opening in that backing plate and cause those wires to, cause a short somewhere. Now the wires, you can see there's two of them, they are black wires. One will connect to a ground, the other connects to your brake feed. And because they're both black, either wire can be used for either function.

This does replace the brake magnet on your Dexter axle electric brake assembly. It works with the 10 inch by two and a quarter inch 4,400 pound brake assemblies and the 12 inch by two inch 7,000 pound brake assemblies. As you can see, this part will include everything I laid out here on the table. The magnet itself, the spring, and then the retainer clip that'll hold the magnet to the brake lever on your brake assembly. But that should do it for the review on the replacement trailer, brake magnet for the Dexter axle, 4,400 pound and 7,000 pound electric brake assemblies..

  • Troubleshooting Amperage On Brake Magnets
When you are testing the brakes you will need to sever both of the magnet wires. You can connect one of the wires to a 12-volt battery with a multimeter between the positive battery post and the magnet. Then connect the other magnet wire to the negative post of the battery. If you have 10 or 12 inch brake magnets the reading should be 3.2 to 4.0 amps at 12-13 volts. For 7 inch brake magnets the reading should be between 3.0 and 3.2 amps at 12-13 volts. If your amperage is greater than...

  • Info Needed to Pick Out Replacement Bearings for Trailer
Get the hub off and get me either the diameter of the spindles where the bearings ride or the numbers stamped on the bearings. If there is a set of Dexter brake assemblies used currently there's a very good chance you have a standard hub that we'd have bearings for.

If the assembly is humming when you apply the brakes that's a good sign. That means it's working and is totally normal to hear. I'd need to know more info on your assemblies though to pick out magnets. I'd need to know the brand if you can find it. Most likely it's a Dexter assembly and you'd need the part # BP01-225.

  • Trailer Brakes Release Intermittently on Enclosed Car Trailer
The fact that the braking issue happens when you are towing the trailer but not when it is sitting still for testing makes me think that there is a loose connection somewhere that is affected by movement of the trailer and vehicle. The first places to look are the vehicle and trailer side connectors. Make sure each of them is clean and free of corrosion inside where the wires attach and outside on the pins. Make sure the wiring going to the trailer brakes is not pinched or sandwiched between...

For a brake magnet with a red wire we have # BP01-285. It fits Hayes and AL-KO 12-1/4 x 3-1/2 inch assemblies (see product page for specific years). However, these magnets are for 9K to 12K axles. The magnet is interchangeable so if you do indeed have brake assemblies for a 6K axle, it will still work for you. The magnet will be just a bit stronger but will not cause you any issues. According to my contact at Dexter, the Dexter # BP01-225 is rated for use on up to a 7K axle and it is intended to fit Dexter and Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brake assemblies. It has a larger profile and may not fit on Hayes/Alko brake assemblies. Where as the # BP01-180, is also rated for use on up to 7K axles, and it is considered a fit for Dexter and Hayes/Alko brake assemblies. Installing the magnet, part # BP01-225, is not tough at all. There is a retaining clip on the control arm that holds the magnet.
