Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes BP01-225 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the replacement trailer brake magnet for the Dexter 12 inch by 2 inch brake assemblies. Now this magnet kit will allow you to replace the worn out magnet on your Dexter trailer brakes. And what's nice is by just changing the magnet it will save you money and time, because it's better than replacing the whole entire brake assembly. This magnet is the oval design, so it does increase the efficiency of the magnet, extends the life of the magnet. If you notice, the wires that come out of the magnet, they have a nice protective sleave on it. And the reason they do that, is because when you install this on your brake assembly, this portion of the wire goes through the backing plate. You want to make sure the wire's protected, so it doesn't rub up against the opening in the backing plate.

They put this nice protective sleeve on it. The wires you can see, are black wires. There's two black wires. One will connect to a ground, the other to the brake feed. And they're both black, so either wire can be used for either function. Now this part does include everything shown here.

It includes the magnet itself, the spring, and even the clip that holds the magnet into place on your brake assembly. Application for this is Dexter 12 inch by 2 inch electric trailer brake assemblies for 7,000 pound axles. But that should do it for the review on the replacement trailer brake magnet for the Dexter 12 inch by 2 inch brake assemblies.

  • Comparing Trailer Brake Magnets # BP01-225 and # BP01-180
The Trailer Brake Magnet, # BP01-225, that you have referenced is designed for use with 12 x 2 inch Dexter electric drum brakes for 7,000 pound capacity axles. A similar magnet, # BP01-180, fits Dexter 6K, Alko 6K and 7K after 1988 (excluding centerline), and Hayes 6K and 7K after 1988 (excluding centerline) 12 x 2 inch drum brakes. Both magnets have 1 wire for ground, and 1 for power and it does not matter which wire is used for either function.

  • Is # BP01-225 a Replacement for # BP01-180 Brake Magnet
According to my contacts at Redneck Trailer Supply, the less expensive BP01-225 is indeed an acceptable replacement for the BP01-180 brake magnets on your 12x2 Dexter brake assembly.

  • Will the Dexter # BP01-225 work as a Replacement part for the # BP01-180 or BP01-185
According to my contact at Dexter, the Dexter # BP01-225 is rated for use on up to a 7K axle and it is intended to fit Dexter and Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brake assemblies. It has a larger profile and may not fit on Hayes/Alko brake assemblies. Where as the # BP01-180, is also rated for use on up to 7K axles, and it is considered a fit for Dexter and Hayes/Alko brake assemblies. The # BP01-185 is rated for use on up to 6K axles, and is considered a fit for Dexter brake assemblies. If...

  • Replacement Brake Shoes and Brake Magnets for Dexter 4.4K, 10 inch x 2-1/4 inch Trailer Brakes
I can certainly help you find the replacement brake shoe and brake magnets for your Dexter brake assemblies on your 2014 Forest River. We have different part numbers for the replacement parts you listed, but they are the correct parts for your brake assemblies. To replace the brake shoes, you will want the 10 Inch x 2-1/4 Inch Electric Brake Shoe/Lining (One Wheel) # BP04-095. This brake shoe pad is designed to replace Dexter 10 inch x 2-1/4 inch electric brakes. I confirmed this with...

  • What Trailer Brakes Will Accept Replacement Magnet # BP01-225
The replacement magnet, # BP01-225, fits several different brake assemblies. it fits Dexter 10 x 2-1/4 inch assemblies, Dexter 12 x 2 manual assemblies and 12 x 2 Nev-R-Adjust assemblies, 7K axles. For a brake magnet with a red wire we have # BP01-285. It fits Hayes and AL-KO 12-1/4 x 3-1/2 inch assemblies (see product page for specific years). However, these magnets are for 9K to 12K axles. As long as you have the correct magnet, the wire color will not matter. One of the wires will...

  • Which Magnets are Recommended for 12 inch Dexter Trailer Brake Assemblies
Depends on the capacity Dexter axle you have. If your 12 inch drum axles are 6k rated the magnet you would need as a replacement is the part # BP01-180. If instead you have a 7k axle the correct magnet is the part # BP01-225.

  • Troubleshooting Amperage On Brake Magnets
When you are testing the brakes you will need to sever both of the magnet wires. You can connect one of the wires to a 12-volt battery with a multimeter between the positive battery post and the magnet. Then connect the other magnet wire to the negative post of the battery. If you have 10 or 12 inch brake magnets the reading should be 3.2 to 4.0 amps at 12-13 volts. For 7 inch brake magnets the reading should be between 3.0 and 3.2 amps at 12-13 volts. If your amperage is greater...

  • How To Attach Brake Magnet to Brake Assembly
Installing the magnet, part # BP01-225, is not tough at all. There is a retaining clip on the control arm that holds the magnet. The hole in the magnet goes over the upright part of the arm and rests on the spring. Then, all you have to do is replace the clip that holds the magnet to the arm. If you need the retaining clip we sell them in a pack of 10 with part # AKBRKR-MC.

  • Availability of Replacement Brake Magnet for 7k Trailer Axle Assembly
If the assembly is humming when you apply the brakes that's a good sign. That means it's working and is totally normal to hear. I'd need to know more info on your assemblies though to pick out magnets. I'd need to know the brand if you can find it. Most likely it's a Dexter assembly and you'd need the part # BP01-225.

  • Replacement Brake Magnet for 12 Inch 7,000 Pound Nev-R-Adjust Dexter Brakes
It sounds like you have the 12 inch 7,000lbs Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brakes # 23-464 left hand side and # 23-465 right hand side. The correct magnet for both these brakes is the # BP01-225. I went ahead and linked the magnet you will need to this page for your convenience.

  • Trailer Brakes Release Intermittently on Enclosed Car Trailer
The fact that the braking issue happens when you are towing the trailer but not when it is sitting still for testing makes me think that there is a loose connection somewhere that is affected by movement of the trailer and vehicle. The first places to look are the vehicle and trailer side connectors. Make sure each of them is clean and free of corrosion inside where the wires attach and outside on the pins. Make sure the wiring going to the trailer brakes is not pinched or sandwiched...

  • Info Needed to Pick Out Replacement Bearings for Trailer
Get the hub off and get me either the diameter of the spindles where the bearings ride or the numbers stamped on the bearings. If there is a set of Dexter brake assemblies used currently there's a very good chance you have a standard hub that we'd have bearings for.

  • How to Test Brake Magnets on a Dexter 7,000 Lb Axle
I have attached a help article that will walk you through step by step the various processes to troubleshoot brake magnets. In order to perform these tasks you are going to need a multimeter like part # BTMT15 instead of a test light like part # 40376. Then depending on where the problem originates, you can use part # 10-1-1 if you need to replace any of the wires and part # BP01-225 if you need to replace any of the magnets.

  • Are Replacement Shoes/Linings and Magents Available for Dexter 12x2 Inch Nev-R-Adjust Trailer Brakes
Yes, the brake shoes and magnets are available as replacement parts for 12 inch Nev-R-Adjust brake assembly # 23-464. Some brake assemblies have expensive replacement parts and on those it makes more sense to replace the whole assembly. For replacement shoes, left hand side use # K71-675 and for the right use # K71-676. The magnet is # BP01-225. The cost of a magnet and shoe/lining for one brake assembly costs more than the whole assembly. Going to disc brakes is a great idea. Not only...

  • Axle Kits with Electric Brakes to Replace Mobile Home Axles
We do carry replacement magnets and other parts for electric drum brakes, including some older designs. I linked the replacement magnets we carry for 12 x 2 brakes, parts # BP01-225 and # BP01-180. However, mobile home axles are not intended for continuous use on a trailer. Mobile home axles are manufactured to be strong enough only for one use to transport the dwelling to its destination - just that one time. Mobile home axles are not safe for ongoing use on a trailer. But we do...

  • Recommended Brake Assemblies For Gooseneck Trailer With Dual 7K Axles
With 7K axles on your trailer I recommend using brakes that are designed for your rig. Using 6K brakes on the trailer may not be sufficient. There are two differences between the 6k and the 7k brakes. The brake magnet regardless of the size magnet has more windings on the 7k which makes the magnet stronger. Also, the linings are constructed of different material between the 6k and 7k. The 7k material is more aggressive. Since price is a factor for you I recommend going with less-expensive...

  • Testing a Tandem Axle Trailer With Only 1 Brake Assembly Working
Since power is reaching one of your brake assemblies, the issue could be caused by a number of other factors such as poor ground connections, brakes need to be adjusted, the electric brake circuit, or bad brake magnets. The first step I would take is to inspect the ground connections for the trailer connector and each brake magnet. If the grounds for the brake magnets are all spliced together, I recommend ground each of them to the trailer frame individually. Be sure they are grounded...

  • Brake Magnets Needed for 2010 Surtrac Trailer with 5200 LB Axles
I spoke with my contact at Dexter Axle and if there is any question regarding capacity, he recommends going with a magnet for a 7K axle brake assembly. The magnet is interchangeable so if you do indeed have brake assemblies for a 6K axle, it will still work for you. The magnet will be just a bit stronger but will not cause you any issues. Currently we offer 2 options when it comes to brake magnets for 12 inch x 2 inch brake assemblies. Trailer Brake Magnet, # BP01-180, fits: Dexter...
