Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-450 Review

Today, we're going to review Part Number 23-450. This is the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly. This is an electric trailer brake assembly which is designed to fit on the Dexter 9,000 and 10,000 pound trailer axles. The size of this assembly is 12-1/4-inch by 3-3/8 inches. Now, this does have the cast backing plate, as you can see right here and it does use the seven-hole mounting pattern. You do want to make sure it lines up to the brake mounting flange on your axle that would have seven holes. This is the left-hand side of the assembly and the best way to tell that is you can always look at the sticker, but if that sticker happens to be missing, you can always tell the small shoe will face the front of the trailer, the larger shoe will face the rear of the trailer. Usually, this actuating arm is pointed towards the front of the trailer also.

That will let you know this is the driver side or left-hand side of the trailer. Now, these are electric brakes, so you do have two wires -- one will be a power wire, the other will be a ground wire. It doesn't matter which ones which, you just have to hook one at power, one ground. Here is your magnet right here. It does have the adjuster wheel down at the bottom that is used to adjust the brakes, so these are manually adjusted. When you apply these or when you install these on to your axle, what you'll need to do is, with the drum on it, you would just need to turn your tire and then adjust this with a screw driver until it would lock up that tire and then just back it off a few turns. That would give you initial adjustment. As the brake shoes wear down the road, you might have to readjust them later on.

Basically, the way this electric assembly would work is this magnet right here when it's hooked up to the power. It would apply power to this and magnetize it. Your drum that is over your brake assembly has a surface on here that this would attach to and magnetizing it here too. As it does and as the drum is rotating, it would actually pull on this actuating arm.As you can see, as I pull that actuating arm, the shoes are actually moving out and they would apply the brakes on the inside of your drum and stop your trailer. Now, these are sized as 12-1/4 by 3-3/8.

The way you would get that is the 12-1/4 means the overall diameter of the brake assembly. If we would measure to the outside, outside of the shoes, that will give you about 12-1/4 inches. Then the 3-3/8 means the width of the brake shoe right here, so if we put a tape measure on that, it should come to 3-3/8 inches. That should do it for the review on Part Number 23-450 the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly for the Dexter 9,000 and 10,000 pound trailer axles.

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Accessories and Parts

Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Replacement Bearings and Seal for Dexter 10k Trailer Hub
  • The bearings you need are # 387A for the inner bearing, # 25580 for the outer bearing, and for the seal # 10-51 since we know you have a 10k Dexter axle. For brake assemblies you'd need the part # 23-450 for the left hand side and part # 23-451 for the right hand side. For a hub you'd need # 8-430-5UC3.

  • Replacement Brakes and Hubs/Drums for a 2002 Rolls Rite Trailer With 10K Axles
  • Thanks for the info! I was able to use the serial number that you provided (D7686254) to find the correct replacement braking assemblies and hub/drum assemblies for your trailer. I have attached these for you below: Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly part # 23-451 (Right Hand) Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly part # 23-450 (Left Hand) Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly part # K08-288-90

  • 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 Inch Electric Trailer Brakes for 9K and 10K Trailer Axles
  • There are 2 different sets of 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch brake assemblies and the difference between them is the mounting patterns they have. Electric brakes # 23-450 and # 23-451 will bolt to either a 5-hole or 7-hole mounting flange and they are for 9K to 10K axles which is what the hub # 9-44-1 is for. Electric brakes # 23-434 and # 23-435 will bolt to a 4-hole flange. So if you look at the flange your brakes are mounted to now and see just 4 holes in a square pattern you would use...

  • Need Brake Assembly For Dexter Trailer Hub And Drum - 8,000 lbs Axles - 8 on 6-1/2, # 8-218-9,
  • You mentioned a 12-1/2 inch drum, but Dexter only list a 12-1/4 inch X 3-3/8 inch drum. The parts that I am recommending are for the Dexter Hub and Drum, # 8-218-9, which is the 12-1/4 inch X 3-3/8 inch drum. I have the complete brake assemblies for the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum - 8,000 lbs Axles - 8 on 6-1/2, # 8-218-9. The complete assemblies would contain the magnets, actuating arms, brake shoes and springs and cast backing plate. If you have the 4 bolt flange the brake assemblies...

  • Are there 12 x 3-3/8 Inch Electric Trailer Brakes
  • Like you said we have 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch brakes but no 12 x 3-3/8 inch brakes. When measuring though measure the inside diameter of the drum and not the diameter of the brakes. I have included a picture showing what I mean. If you measure the drum and get 12-1/4 inches then you can use 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch brakes such as # 23-450. But if you are measuring the inner diameter of the drum and are getting 12 inches then we will not have brakes that match the specs you need.

  • Replacement Dexter Brake Assembly Recommendation for a 9k Dexter Axle
  • So I was able to pull up some information on your Dexter Axle and based on the 008-232-05 number you listed it looks like you have a 9k rated axle. So for Dexter 9k brake assemblies you would want the part # 23-451 for the right side and part # 23-450 for the left side. These assemblies are 12-1/4 inch by 3-3/8 inch and are self adjusting. These also use a 6 lug bolt pattern to attach to the spindle of the trailer. Check out the review video I attached as well.

  • Replacement Electric Brakes Needed on a Kaufman Car Hauler with 10000 lb Axles
  • Since your trailer was made in 2008, the trailer manufacturer should be able to tell you the exact brand and part numbers for replacement brakes. It appears there were two Kaufman trailer companies, one in Texas and one in North Carolina. The company in Texas closed, so it would be difficult to get specific information from them. I spoke with Kaufman trailers in North Carolina, however, they said they do not have any trailers with a TL designation. There should be an identification plate...

  • Electric Brake Assemblies for a Trailer with Dexter 10,000 Pound Axles
  • It is likely that Dexter brake assemblies # 23-450 and # 23-451 are correct for your 10K Dexter axles. These brakes mount with either a 5 or 7 bolt pattern. And they do have the correct measurements; 12-1/4 x 3-3/8. Take a look at the picture I have included showing the spacing between the mounting holes for this bolt pattern to determine if these brakes will fit.

  • Electric Brake Assembly Recommendation for a Dexter 10k Axle
  • Yes, you can replace the hydraulic brake assemblies of your trailer with electric ones. It would just be a matter of removing the hubs, removing the old assemblies, installing the correct size/rated ones, and then wiring the assemblies back up to the trailer connector. I attached a help article that covers everything on adding brakes to a trailer as well as a picture of where to measure on your hubs so that you can pick out the correct size assemblies. Since you mentioned that you...

  • Electric Trailer Brake Assembly with 6-Bolt Mounting Pattern for 1960 Airstream Tradewind Trailer
  • Some of the older Airstream trailers used unique proprietary components, including brakes. We do not carry any 6-bolt brake assemblies; but we have 4-, 5- and 7-bolt types that can be seen on the link provided, such as Dexter 12-1/4 x 3-3/8-inch brake # 23-450 and # 23-451, which can use a 5- or 7-bolt mount. You will need to first confirm the axle capacity and the diameter and width of your drums to check for a suitable brake. You may be able to find a compatible brake assembly but...

  • Is the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly # 23-451 Made in the USA.
  • Yes, the Dexter Electric, Right Hand Side, Trailer Brake Assembly, # 23-451, is manufactured by Dexter in the USA. For the left hand side trailer brake assembly and hardware, you will need part numbers # 23-450, # 7-5, # 38N, and # 38LW.

  • To determine which brake assembly you need, measure the width of your brake linings, as shown in the photo I edited for you. If your existing brake shoes measure 4 inches wide, the # 23-438 you mentioned would be an example of a good replacement for you if your existing brake assemblies use 7 mounting bolts (some use 4) and the diameter of the assembly is 12-1/4 inches in diameter when measured from the outside of one brake shoe directly across to the outside of the other shoe as shown...

We always recommend replacing all of the components at one time so you are sure everything works well. If you check out your 9-44 drum you currently have and the inside surface shows no signs of wear or damage you can use them when changing from hydraulic to electric brakes. I spoke with my contact at Dexter and they told me that all you would have to replace...

Just use the filters on the page to see if we have one that will work for you.
