Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-435 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12 1/4 inch by 3 3/8 inch self adjusting electric brake assembly for passenger side. This is designed to fit on 8,000 lb to 9,000 lb axles. Now electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. They basically only require an electric brake controller. You don't have to worry about any actuators or hydraulic lines for electric brakes. The size on this is a 12 1/4 inch by 3 3/8 inch passenger side electric trailer brake assembly.

When they give those dimensions what they're measuring is the 12 1/4 would be measured from this side to this side of the pad. If we put a ruler on there, there's your 12 1/4 inches. The 3 3/8 would be if you measure the width of the pad itself. There's your 3 3/8 inch. This is a passenger side or right hand side. The way to tell that .

. . Now on a new assembly you'll have usually a sticker that will tell you that. If that sticker wasn't there and you had to figure out what side it goes on basically what you want to do is look at the size of the pad on the shoe. If you look at this one the pad goes from here all the way to here.

If you look at this one it goes from this end all the way to here. This is a longer pad. This is a shorter pad. Basically, the shorter pad is the primary shoe and that will always face the front of the trailer. With the shorter pad facing the front of the trailer then you can tell that this is a passenger side or right hand side assembly. Now the friction material on this brake shoe is fully bonded.

It's not riveted to the shoe so it gives you a lot longer life. More braking torque. This is a self-adjusting brake. The reason you can tell that is if you notice this cable that goes around the pulley and attaches to a lever down here. That lever will automatically turn the adjuster down there. What happens is it doesn't require the periodic manual adjustments like on standard brakes. All you have to do is after you install this you make your initial adjustment of the brakes and then they'll self-adjust as you go. This one does have the durable cast backing plate. Right here. It is a 4 bolt brake mounting flange design. In other words, this is designed to fit on a 4 bolt mounting flange on your axle. The mounting bolts, nuts and lock washers are sold separately. This brake assembly is certified by USSAE standards. Again they give you the dimensions on this is 12 1/4 inches by 3 3/8 inches wide. Again the axles this fits on is 8,000 lb up to 9,000 lb axles. Again it's a right hand passenger side. This is designed to use 12 1/4 inch brake drums. These are electric brakes. You do have to supply power. You can see there are two white wires coming out the back here. Basically those two wires need to be connected. One goes to a good clean ground. The other goes to the brake feed because they are both white wires either wire can be used for either function. That should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 1/4 inch by 3 3/8 inch self-adjust electric brake assembly for passenger side and fits a 8,000 lb to 9,000 lb axles.

  • Mounting Flange Bolt Pattern for Dexter 4 Bolt 8k Brake Assemblies
  • For Dexter 8k rated brake assemblies that have 4 bolt mounting pattern and are 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch you would be referring to the part # 23-434 which has 3-5/8 inches between the left and right holes and 3-7/16 inches between the top and bottom holes. I attached a picture that shows this.

  • 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 Inch Electric Trailer Brakes for 9K and 10K Trailer Axles
  • There are 2 different sets of 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch brake assemblies and the difference between them is the mounting patterns they have. Electric brakes # 23-450 and # 23-451 will bolt to either a 5-hole or 7-hole mounting flange and they are for 9K to 10K axles which is what the hub # 9-44-1 is for. Electric brakes # 23-434 and # 23-435 will bolt to a 4-hole flange. So if you look at the flange your brakes are mounted to now and see just 4 holes in a square pattern you would use...

  • Need Brake Assembly For Dexter Trailer Hub And Drum - 8,000 lbs Axles - 8 on 6-1/2, # 8-218-9,
  • You mentioned a 12-1/2 inch drum, but Dexter only list a 12-1/4 inch X 3-3/8 inch drum. The parts that I am recommending are for the Dexter Hub and Drum, # 8-218-9, which is the 12-1/4 inch X 3-3/8 inch drum. I have the complete brake assemblies for the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum - 8,000 lbs Axles - 8 on 6-1/2, # 8-218-9. The complete assemblies would contain the magnets, actuating arms, brake shoes and springs and cast backing plate. If you have the 4 bolt flange the brake assemblies...

  • Trailer Brake Assemblies for 12 X 3-3/8 inch Brakes with 4 Mounting Holes on a 1991 Kountry Aire
  • I checked with my contact at our supplier and found that the axles on your trailer are one of two brands. With the 4 bolt pattern they are either Hayes/AL-KO, 8,000 lb. axles with 12 by 3-3/8 inch brake assemblies or they are Dexter 10,000 lb. axles with 12-1/4 by 3-3/8 inch brake assemblies. If your brake assemblies are the 12-1/4 by 3-3/8 inch assemblies and you have the Dexter 10,000 lb. axles then you can use the # 23-434 and # 23-435 assemblies to replace your trailer brake assemblies....

The center hole on the hub # 8-218-9 you were looking at is 4-9/16 for the older style and 4-3/4 inches for the newer style.

  • Recommended Brake Flange, Brakes, And Hub And Drum For 8,000-lb Axle
  • Typically, a 3-1/2 inch diameter axle like you said you have on your trailer is an 8,000-lb axle. The brake mounting flange on the axle that is designed for a 3-1/2 inch axle is part # 4-50. The flange mounting holes measure 3-3/8 inches between the left and right holes and 3-5/8 inches between the top and bottom holes. • Can Larger Electric Brake Assemblies be Used on 7K Trailer Axle
  • None of the drums offered that are compatible with the wheel bearings used by a 7K axle would work with a 12-1/2 x 3.375 brake assembly, which is usually used on a 8 or 9K axle. I'm assuming your trailer is a tandem axle. Do both axles have brakes? If not, you could add brakes to the second axle which would dramatically increase your braking performance. You would indeed experience more reliable braking action if you went with disc brakes. In order to make a recommendation, I'd need...

  • Will The Brake Assemblies For A 7 Bolt Flange Work With The 4 Bolt Flange?
  • For a 9,000 lb axle with 4 bolts, you will want the Dexter Electric Brake Assembly, RH 12-1/4" x 3-3/8", # 23-435 and the matching left side assembly # 23-434. These are the only assemblies for the 4 bolt mounting plate and the 7 bolt plates are not compatible. Unfortunately, the Electric Trailer Brake with Dust Shield - Self-Adjusting - 12-1/4" - Left Hand - 10,000 lbs, # AKEBRK-10L, is an example of the 7 bolt flange that is not compatible with your axle.

The electric brake drum assembly that fits the 8-285 hub and integrated drum would be the Dexter Electric Brake Assembly-Left Hand, part # 23-434, for the left side and Dexter Electric Brake Assembly-Right Hand, part # 23-435.

  • Video That Shows Trailer Drum Brake Shoes Getting Replaced
  • You would not need cut anything to replace the shoes on the drum brakes of your trailer. If you check out the video I attached you can see our installer replacing shoes on a brake assembly and get walked through the process. If you are asking about whether or not the drums need to be turned before installing new assemblies...that will depend on the condition of the hub. If the surface looks smooth and not grooved out at all then no. If so, then you would need to have them turned.
