  • Mounting Bolt Pattern for Dexter 8K - 9K Brake Assembly # 23-434
Great news, I was able to go out into our warehouse and measure the mounting holes on this brake assembly. The center to center width measurement is 3-5/8 inches. The height measurement is 3-7/16 inches center to center. I have added an image for you to see my exact measurements.

  • Troubleshooting Dexter Nev-R Adjust Assembly on Trailer that Randomly Locks Up
It's got to be something mechanical on the assembly of the problem wheel. I'd go with a new assembly like part # 23-434 and you'll have it taken care of. Unless you pull the hub off and can find an obvious mechanical error. You could test this by swapping the brake assemblies on the left hand side of the trailer and see if a different wheel starts to lock up.

  • Are Dexter 8k Brake Assemblies and Al Ko Assemblies Interchangeable
The Al Ko brake setups use a slightly different bolt pattern so they do not fit in place of the Dexter setups like the # 23-435 that you referenced. For the matching other side you'd want the # 23-434.

  • Do self Adjusting Brakes Require In Initial Adjustment?
Thank you for clarifying. Sorry if I missed that part on your initial question. With Self adjusting brakes it will work a bit differently. You will not need to mess with an adjustment screw. You will install the brakes and hubs like normal. Self adjusting brakes will adjust themselves upon initial install. At first they will feel pretty weak but with every brake application (while moving) they will get tighter and tighter until they are properly tensioned. What I would do is find a parking...

  • Recommended Electric Brake Assemblies for Lippert 8,000 Axle
The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-434-435 referenced in your question is designed for 8,000 pound axles. As long as your existing hub drums feature a 12-1/4 inch diameter and 3-3/8 inch depth, these electric brake assemblies will work great on your Lippert axle. You will also just want to make sure that the 4 bolt mounting pattern on these assemblies matches the pattern on your existing mounting flange. Both the left hand and right hand assemblies are included. I have attached...

  • Replacement Electric Brakes For Dexter 10,000LB Axle With 12-1/4" X 3-3/8" Brake Assemblies
Dexter was able to tell me that your 10,000LB axle came with their 12-1/4"x3-3/8" Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-434-435. Due to the age of the axle I recommend replacing the entire assembly to ensure their are no issues with the old magnets or wiring.

  • Installing Electric Brakes - What Does The Initial Adjustment Consist Of?
I can definitely help with that. You will need to do an initial adjustment when installing the Electric Trailer Brake Assemblies # 23-434-435. Once you have the brakes and hubs installed, you will turn the adjustment screw located inside the back of the brake assembly. This will expand the brake shoes and create more drag. The idea is that you want to still be able to turn the hub by hand, but it will not spin freely. So there should be a bit of resistance, but not too much or your brakes...

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies for Dexter 8-10k Axles
We do not have any trailer brake magnets that are rated for that high of an axle. We do have the Dexter brake assemblies part # 23-450-451 which are a replacement set of assemblies for 9k or 10k axles by Dexter. For an 8k assembly we have the part # 23-435 for the right hand side and part # 23-434 for the left hand side.

  • What Brake Assemblies Fit on the Dexter D80 Trailer Axle?
The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-434-435 are the assemblies most often found on Dexter D80 axles which utilize electric brakes. If your axle is set up with hydraulic drum brakes they most likely have the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit # 23-402-403. If you can locate the axle serial number I can reach out to Dexter to find out exactly what parts were installed from Dexter to verify the correct replacements and what upgrades are available. The serial number will be on the axle...

  • Electric Trailer Brake Kit for 8K Drum Brakes
There are a pair of brake kits which are rated for 8,000 lbs which may work for you. The Electric Trailer Brake Kit w/ Dust Shields # AKEBRK-8 and Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-434-435 have a 4 bolt mounting flange bolt pattern, are 12-1/4" diameter x 3-3/8" wide, and are self-adjusting. These will only require the use of an electric brake controller; I've added a link to our page with each of our controllers for you. I've also added a link to a video review of the Dexter brakes...

  • Replacement Electric Brake Assemblies For an 8,000LB Dexter Axle Manufactured In 1996
Yes, the etrailer Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-8 will fit your 8,000LB Dexter Axle that was produced in 1996. I was able to confirm this with Dexter that the 12-1/4" x 3-3/8" was the only size electric brakes that were installed from the factory on axle. We also have the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-434-435 if you wish to stay with original equipment.

  • How to Determine Correct Bearings, Seals, and Electric Brakes for Hub and Drum
I was unable to find a reference to that axle, but there is a simple way to find out the exact replacement bearings and seals you need. Simply take apart your hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you need to use digital caliper and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings ride, as well as where the grease seal rides. You...

  • Is There Difference Between etrailer and Dexter 8k Trailer Brake Assembly Sets
The value 8k etrailer brake assembly set part # AKEBRK-8 and the premium Dexter 8k set part # 23-434-435 both offer the same stopping power. The Dexter brand is widely considered to be the best brand for trailer braking components and they do work really well but the etrailer brand is not low quality by any means and with the price difference as large as it is I would say it's the easy winner.

  • Are 8k Dexter Trailer Hubs a Fit for Both Sides of the Trailer
Trailer hubs are not directional like brake assemblies are. The number you mentioned is very similar to the # 8-285-11 which is a fit for both the right and left side of the trailer. The electric brake drum assembly that fits the 8-285 hub and integrated drum would be the Dexter Electric Brake Assembly-Left Hand, part # 23-434, for the left side and Dexter Electric Brake Assembly-Right Hand, part # 23-435.

  • Mounting Flange Bolt Pattern for Dexter 4 Bolt 8k Brake Assemblies
For Dexter 8k rated brake assemblies that have 4 bolt mounting pattern and are 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch you would be referring to the part # 23-434 which has 3-5/8 inches between the left and right holes and 3-7/16 inches between the top and bottom holes. I attached a picture that shows this.

  • Will The Brake Assemblies For A 7 Bolt Flange Work With The 4 Bolt Flange?
For a 9,000 lb axle with 4 bolts, you will want the Dexter Electric Brake Assembly, RH 12-1/4" x 3-3/8", # 23-435 and the matching left side assembly # 23-434. These are the only assemblies for the 4 bolt mounting plate and the 7 bolt plates are not compatible. Unfortunately, the Electric Trailer Brake with Dust Shield - Self-Adjusting - 12-1/4" - Left Hand - 10,000 lbs, # AKEBRK-10L, is an example of the 7 bolt flange that is not compatible with your axle.

Good news! I can help get you the measurement you were looking for. The center hole size on the # 23-434 brake assembly, which is also referred to as the axle bore diameter is 3-7/8 inches. The center hole on the hub # 8-218-9 you were looking at is 4-9/16 for the older style and 4-3/4 inches for the newer style.

  • 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 Inch Electric Trailer Brakes for 9K and 10K Trailer Axles
There are 2 different sets of 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch brake assemblies and the difference between them is the mounting patterns they have. Electric brakes # 23-450 and # 23-451 will bolt to either a 5-hole or 7-hole mounting flange and they are for 9K to 10K axles which is what the hub # 9-44-1 is for. I have linked an article below on testing brake magnets for you to reference. You will need a Multimeter # PT89ZR to test the magnets in the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-434-435. First you will begin by testing the output coming from the vehicle. Each magnet should see 3.2-4.0 amps of power between 12-13 volts with the brake controller set to max. • Do Electric Brakes Need Certain Amount of Stopping Power?
That isn't the sort of figure that is factored into brakes. What you need to choose the right brakes is your axle's capacity, which is going to lead you in the right direction in terms of the brakes you need. For example, a 3,500 lb axle capacity would need electric brakes # AKEBRK-35-SA whereas an 8,000 lb axle would use # 23-434-435.
