Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-428 Review

Today I'm going to take a look at the Dexter, 12 1/4 inch, left hand driver side, electric brake assembly, for 7200 pound axle. Now, these are electric brakes, they're a lot easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Basically, they require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary. Now, these are a manual adjustment brake. In other words, your gear down here is what you would adjust in or out.

Now, manual adjustment brakes do require a periodic manual adjustment. This will include the left hand driver side brake assembly. Now, the mounting bolts and the hardware we do sell separately on our website. Dimension on this assembly is 12 1/4 inch diameter by 2 1/2 inch wide, and those measurements, the diameter would be measured from this shoe all the way over to this shoe. If we put a ruler on it, there's your 12 1/4 inch diameter, and the 2 /12 inches wide would be the width of the brake pad on the shoe. If we put out ruler on it, there's your 2 1/2 inch wide. There's usually brake mounting plans or bolt pattern of 4 bolts.

You can see the 4 bolt holes right there. It does require the use of a 12 1/4 inch brake drum. The wheel size used on these brakes are 15 inches or larger, and again, the axle rating for these that they fit on is a 7200 pound axle. Now, these are electric brakes, so they do have 2 wires right here that need to be connected. One goes to the brake feed, the other goes to the clean ground, and they're both 2 red wires, so either wire can be used for either function. This is a left hand driver side, and the easiest way to tell that now, on a new assembly, of course, there'll be a sticker that you can see. But, if that didn't have the sticker on it, just look at the length of the pad on the brake shoe.

You can see this pad goes from here all the way to here. This one is just from here to here. This is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is always the primary shoe, which means that faces the front of the trailer. That means this is the left hand driver side brake assembly.

That should do it for the review on the Dexter, 12 1/4 inch, left hand driver side, electric brake assembly, for 7200 pound axle.

  • Mounting Bolt Pattern and Center Hole Diameter For Dexter Trailer Brake Assemblies 23-248 and 23-429
The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly # 23-429 & # 23-428 have a center opening of 3-7/8" for fitting on the axle tube. It will mount to bolt holes that are 3-5/8" spread left to right and 4-3/8" top to bottom. I have included images below with both measurements to help you identify the fitment. We also have them as a Set # 23-428-429 since you will will being replacing them on multiple axles. If these will not fit your current axles please let me know your mounting pattern and the...

  • What is the Mounting Bolt Pattern for Electric Trailer Brake Assembly # 23-429
Trailer brake assembly # 23-429 has mounting holes that are 3-5/8" apart on center side to side, 4-3/8" on center top to bottom, and 5 inches on center diagonally. The matching left hand side assembly is # 23-428.

  • Mounting Bolt Pattern for Dexter 12-1/4 x 2-1/2-Inch Electric Drum Brake Assemblies
All of our 12-1/4 x 2-1/2-inch brake assemblies use a 4-bolt mount. These appear on the linked page. We have none with a 9-bolt flange mounting pattern. I did check with several of our install and technical staff and I learned that some brake assemblies will use a backing plate that has extra holes, holes not intended for mounting purposes.

  • Replacement Electric Trailer Brakes for Dexter 7,000 Pound Trailer Axle
For trailer brake assembly # 23-428 to fit the drum will need to have an inner diameter of 12-1/4 inches and a width where the pads touch of 2-1/2 inches. I have included a picture showing these locations in a drum. This brake also mounts on a 4 bolt brake mounting flange. The 12-1/4 by 2-1/2 is not a common size though. The most common size brakes for a Dexter 7,000 pound axle is going to be 12 x 2 inch that mounts on a 5 bolt flange such as # 23-180 and # 23-181.

  • Is Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit for 7,200 lb Axles for One Axle or Two
The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 12-1/4" - Left Hand # 23-428 is just one left hand brake assembly; the other side is the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 12-1/4" - Right Hand # 23-429. That is for one axle, and you can order them as a unit with the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 12-1/4" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 7,200 lbs # 23-428-429. For an adjustment spoon you will need the Brake Adjustment Spoon for Drum Brakes # W80630, and the correct mounting...

  • Are Self-Adjusting Electric Brakes Available For 7200-Lb Trailer Axle
The electric brake assemblies we offer for a 7,200-lb axle are manual adjust brakes. We do not offer self-adjusting electric brakes that measure 12-1/4 x 2-1/2 inch. For the right hand you would need part # 23-429, and for the left hand you would need part # 23-428. If you need a brake adjustment tool I recommend part # W80630.

  • Brake Assembly Option for 7200 lb Rated Axle
Unfortunately, due to the unique pad size and brake assembly mounting bolt pattern used by a 7200 lb rated axle, the Dexter # 23-429 (right side) and # 23-428 (left side) are the least expensive (and the only) replacement brake assemblies we offer for your particular axle.

  • Dimensions Of The Dexter Replacement Shoe Centering Spring For 12-1/4 Electric Brake Assemblies
I went out to our warehouse and measured the Replacement Shoe Centering Spring for 12-1/4" Electric Brake Assemblies # BP07-195, and measured 2-3/4" from end to end, and 3/4" tall. Since we do not have the exact replacement for you, the best option is to replace your braking assemblies. You can check out # 23-428 for the left hand assembly, and # 23-429 for the right hand side. These braking assemblies will work great with standard hub and drum assemblies, and measure 12-1/4" in diameter,...

  • Trailer Brakes Compatible with 12x2 inch or 12-1/4x2-1/2 Inch Hubs
We have a fit for 12x2 inch hubs or 12-1/4x2-1/2 inch hubs. The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 12-1/4" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 7,200 lbs # 23-428-429 is the only fit we have for the larger hubs and it has a 4 bolt versus 5 bolt brake flange connection, but we have both electric or hydraulic options for the 12x2 inch hubs. I've linked the page to all those options.

  • Testing and Replacing Brakes on a 2012 Carriage Cameo Trailer
I've attached an article to help you test the magnets. You also should inspect the wiring for the brake that's giving you issues. If you need to replace the brake you don't have to do both. However, it might be easier in the long run and if the others are showing wear it's a good idea. It can save you time and money later. To determine which brakes to get you can measure the inside diameter of your drums. If they're 12 inch drums then I recommend using # AKEBRK-7-SA. These are self-adjusting...

  • Mounting Hole Pattern for Dexter 12 x 2 Electric Drum Brake 23-105-09
Most of our 12 x 2 electric drum brake assemblies like Dexter left/right kit # 23-112-113 use a 5-bolt mounting pattern but the Dexter brake kit # 23-105-106-09 has both 4-bolt and 5-bolt mounting holes. I went to our warehouse and measured the spacing of the 4 bolt holes. You can see this center-to-center hole spacing in the photo I prepared for you. Please note that we do have a brake in a similar size, 12-1/4 x 2-1/2, for a 7200-lb axle that uses a 4-bolt pattern. This is brake set...

  • Electric Trailer Brakes for 6,000 lb or 7,200 lb Axle
The only way to know for sure what the capacity is of your axle is to contact the manufacturer with the serial number, but since you said they are 3 inch round axles, you are correct they will almost certainly be either 6,000 lb, 7,000 lb, or 7,200 lb axles. We can actually get you set up with new electric brakes based on the size of your hub and drum. You just need to measure the inside diameter and depth of your drum, as well as know the brake flange mounting bolt pattern to be sure....

  • Replacement Hub and Drums For PJT Trailer With 008-393-03 Installed
Thanks for all of the information on your PJT Trailer! Based on your drum part number you have a 12-1/4" Drum that is oil bath. The Dexter # 8-393-4UC3 is almost right, but it is designed for grease and not oil. You will need the # 8-393-4UC3 and oil seal # 10-63 for each hub. This hub does not include the bearings so you will also need new inner bearing # 25580 and outer bearing # 02475 for each hub. • Is The Distance Between Races On Dexter Hub 8-285-11 and 8-393-6UC3-A The Same?
I had our warehouse measure the distance between the inner and outer races of the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum # 8-285-11 and # 8-393-6UC3-A and they found that both of them have the exact same 1-3/4" measurement, so as long as you have the # 25580 inner bearing and # 02475 outer bearing combination either hub will fit fine. You will just need to match the hub to the correct brake assemblies as the # 8-285-11 uses 12-1/4" x 3-3/8" brake assemblies # 23-434-435 where the # 8-393-6UC3-A uses...
