Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-324 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12 inch left hand driver's side Uni-servo hydraulic drum brake assembly for 5200 pound axles. The hydraulic drum brake assemblies are designed for use with surge type trailer brake actuators. This one is a Uni-servo, which is the single plunger design, and these are manual adjustment brakes, so it does require periodic manual adjustment. Right down here is your adjustment gear to adjust them. Now, this one is a left hand driver's side brake assembly. Also, comes with the five mounting lock washer nuts to install it. The bolts, you can see, are not on here.

Now, the bolts on a 12 inch size brake is usually on the brake mounting phalange, so all you'll need is the nut washer that'll attach it. This also comes with adjuster plugs. If I turn to the backing plate, right down here you'll see there's an access hole and it has a plug in it. Those access holes are what are used to put your adjustment tool through to adjust your brakes. These will have a rubber plug in them, which is nice because it helps keep any dirt or grime from getting into your brake assemblies and on the brake shoes. A few specs on this, the size, 12 inch by two inch, and that's measured 12 inches in diameter from here to here.

If we take a ruler, you can see there's your 12 inch. The width is the width of the pad on the shoe. There's your two inch wide. We mentioned the brake mounting phalange bolt pattern, you can see is five bolt. It does require the use of 12 inch brake drums.

We'll use a wheel size of 14 1/2 inch, 15 inch, or 16 inch. Again, this is designed for axles that are rated at 5200 pounds. This one is the left hand or driver's side assembly and the way you can tell that, on a new assembly, it'll have a sticker, so that's the easiest way. If the sticker wasn't there, you just have to look at the length of the pad on the brake shoe. This one goes from here to here, and the pad over here is all the way from here to here. This is the longer pad.

Shorter pad. The shorter pad is the primary shoe that'll always face the front of the trailer, so that'll tell you that this is the left hand driver's side brake assembly. That should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 inch left hand driver's side Uni-servo hydraulic drum brake assembly for 5200 pound axle.

  • Correct Hydraulic Brake Assembly for Dexter 8-201 Hub/Drum
The Dexter 8-201 is a common 12 x 2 inch hub/drum used on 5,200 or 6,000 lb capacity axles. The 23-324 left hand hydraulic brake assembly you mentioned would certainly be compatible. You would also need the right hand assembly, part # 23-325. For a marine application, I would recommend the Demco 12x2 Marine Hydraulic Brake Assembly, part # 23510 for the right side, and # 23511 for the left. These brake assemblies feature galvanized backing plates and stainless steel spring hardware.

  • Replacement Hydraulic Drum Trailer Brakes for Dexter 8-201 Brakes on a Towable Man Lift
If the brakes in the picture are 12 x 2 inch brakes then yes, you can use # 23-324 (left hand side) and # 23-325 (right hand side). These brakes are rated for 5,200 pound axles and use the 5-bolt mounting pattern as the brake in your picture. The new brakes are also uni-servo just like the one brake in your picture. Something else in your picture is interesting. I believe the brakes on there now are free backing brakes. These brakes would allow you to back up without the brakes engaging....

  • Replacement Hydraulic Trailer Brakes for a 16 Foot Cronkite Utility Trailer
Since you have Dexter hubs and you have the 5-bolt pattern to mount brakes, you can replace them with new Dexter hydraulic brake assemblies. For 3500 pound axles though you would not have a 5-bolt pattern and the assemblies would be smaller than 12x2 inches. So I do not think you have 3500 pound axles. If you can tell me the bearing numbers you have that will help me determine the axle capacity and the correct hub. The Dexter brake assemblies you mentioned, # 23-342 for the left and...

Thanks for sending in a picture of your brake assembly. I can tell by the picture they are not free backing though. You will need to measure the dimensions of them and then check out the link I attached to see all of the free backing brake assemblies we offer. You can select your size from the filters on the page.

  • Which Timbren Axle Less System Allows Use of 8 Lug Hub/Drums
The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - Spindle w/ Brake Flange # TASR7KS01 is designed to be used with 8 lug trailer hubs part # 42866UC3-EZ. This is a 7k axle kit that would work well. For brake assemblies then you'd want the part # 23-324 for the left hand side and part # 23-325 for the right hand side and you'd be set.

  • Replacement Trailer Axle with 65-1/2 Inch Spring Center Measurement
I do have an option for you but we currently do not have a standard trailer axle with a distance of 65-1/2" from the center of each spring seat. Instead, I recommend taking a look at the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System part # ASR5200S01. This system will actually replace the axle and leaf sprigs with a set of rubber aeon springs that will do a much better job of absorbing road shock and support the trailer's load. This system has a 5,200 lb capacity but higher capacities are...

  • Switching Over a Triple Axle Gooseneck Trailer from Electric to Hydraulic Trailer Brakes
Yes, you should be able to switch your triple axle gooseneck trailer over to hydraulic drum brakes from the existing electric brakes. You would need to select the proper hydraulic brake assemblies by axle capacity and brake mounting flange pattern, then add brake lines to the trailer and install an electric over hydraulic actuator on the trailer. You will also need an electric brake controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic units. Your existing brake hubs should work with...

  • Recommended Hubs And Drums That Work With Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System
I can help you out with everything you need to work with the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System # TASR5200S03 for your trailer. The # TASR5200S03 has EZ-Lube spindles so the hub and drum I recommend is part # 8-201-5UC3-EZ. This is a 6 on 5-1/2 hub and drum and includes the bearings, races, seal, grease cap, wheel bolts and lug nuts. This hub and drum assembly will work with hydraulic or electric brakes. The hydraulic brakes I recommend for this system is part # 23-324...

  • Recommended Replacement Axles For Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
As long as the frame itself can handle the additional weight, you would need to upgrade all of the other components under that weight capacity including the coupler. I recommend using the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension - Spindle Only - Regular Tires - 5200 lbs # ASR5200S01. This will allow your to simply remove the existing suspension and axles and add a cross beam or add a piece of 2x3 inch tubing between the axles in the integrated holes. • Axle Recommendation for Trailer Carrying 9,000 Lbs
Since you mention that your trailer will max out 9,000 pounds, which I assume includes the weight of the trailer frame and all cargo, I recommend going with the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension, # ASR5200S01. I spoke with my shop manager regarding whether he felt using the 5,200 pound axles would be overkill. He strongly recommends going with an axle that has a higher capacity than the amount of weight that you plan to carry and feels that the 5,200 capacity axles would be a good choice....

  • Replacement Brake Assembly and Hub Recommendation for a Boyer Boat Trailer
The 8-201-9 number you listed sounds more like a hub drum part number like the part # 8-201-9UC3-EZ. If your current brake assemblies are 12 inch by 2 inch (looks like they are from the picture), the # 23-325 would be the correct assembly as well. For the left hand side you would want the part # 23-324.

  • Replacement Hub and Drum and Hydraulic Brakes for a Cronkite Tandem Axle Trailer
Trailer hub and drum assembly # 8-201-5 does match your bearings. I am fairly certain you have 5,200 pound axles and not 3500 pound axles since all of the parts you need are for higher rated axles than 3500 pounds. The races come already pressed into the hub. If your wheels have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern then this is the hub for you. This hub and drum takes 12 x 2 inch brakes. The brake assemblies that fit and that are also rated for 5200 pound axles are # 23-324 for the left and # 23-325...

  • Availability of Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System With Hydraulic Brakes with 4000-lb Capacity
Both of the Timbren Axle-Less suspension systems with brakes that we offer have a 3500-lb capacity and both also feature electric brakes, not hydraulic brakes. Part # A35RD545E is a kit with 4-inch drop spindles and part # A35RS545E has straight spindles. Neither of these would have the capacity you need for your trailer. We do offer a Timbren system rated for 5200-lbs, part # ASR5200S01, which includes 5-bolt brake flanges. With these you could use hydraulic brake assemblies # 23-325...

  • Recommended Ways To Lift 2008 StarCraft Centennial Trailer
Since you have a torsion axle you can use spacer blocks to get more ground clearance. There are lift kits available if you have Dexter axles. Normally, people use 2 inch by 3 inch, or 2 inch by 4 inch steel tubing with 3/16 or 1/4 inch wall thickness. Raising the trailer will change the geometry of your trailer making it more top heavy and you may have more trailer sway. If you have leaf springs on your trailer you can add longer hangers. You would need to cut off the old ones and have...

If you have hydraulic brakes, then I recommend # 23-324 and # 23-325 instead. For your rear axle, I recommend the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 42865-KIT. The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - 4 Inch Lift Spindle w/ Brake Flange # TASR5200S03 referenced in your question will work great to replace the existing axle on your boat trailer. It can be used in a tandem axle setup (you will just need to order 2), and is compatible with hydraulic drum brakes. This 3500-lb kit is the highest-rated kit that includes electric brakes. We also offer a similar kit with 4-inch drop spindles that allow the trailer to sit lower, part # A35RD545E. • Recommended Axles For Boat Trailer To Switch To Much Larger Wheels
Replacing the spindle on an axle is very difficult because the spindle needs to be exact and concentric or it can cause issues with tires and wheels. And any axle that has been designed for a spindle with a 4-bolt pattern will most likely not work with any spindles designed for an 8-bolt drum and wheel. If you have 13 inch tires on a wheel that has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern and switch to a 16 inch wheel with an 8 bolt pattern means you are going to raise the trailer up by about 3 inches. One...
