Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-180 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12 inch driver's side electric brake assembly for a 7,000 pound axle. Now electric brakes are easy to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Basically they require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary with electric brakes. Now this one is also a manual adjustment brake, so it does require periodic manual adjustment.

You adjust it at the bottom here where this adjustment here is. There is a little gear on there that you would turn with either a brake adjusting tool or a screwdriver, and you would access it through the two access holes on the backing plate right here. Now also what's nice about this brake assembly, if you notice there's two adjuster plugs in there. They do include the adjuster plugs to cover those access holes, which is nice because that will keep dirt and grime out of your brake assembly and off your brake shoes. Now this part number includes the left hand driver's side assembly. The mounting hardware you can see is all included.

Now on the 12 inch size brake assemblies, the brake mounting flange will usually have the bolts already in them. So you just put this up onto there, and then using these included nut and washer combination here you tighten it down and install it onto your trailer. Now the specs on this, the dimension is 12 inch diameter by two inches wide. What they're measuring the diameter is from this brake shoe all the way across to this brake shoe. There's your 12 inch diameter.

The two inch wide would be the width of the pad on the brake shoe, so if we go there's two inch wide. We had mentioned the brake mounting flange, you can see the five holes here, so it does use a five bolt brake mounting flange bolt pattern. Now this does require the use of a 12 inch brake drum. The wheel size that will fit on this assembly is 14.5 inch, 15 inch, and 16 inch wheels. This is designed for an axle that's rated at 7,000 pounds, and again these are electric brakes. If you notice in the back there is two black wires that come out.

They do have to be connected for this assembly to work. One goes to the brake feed, the other goes to the clean ground. They're both black wires, so either wire can be used for either function. We mentioned this is the left hand driver's side assembly. The way to tell that now on a new assembly of course they'll have a sticker that will tell you what side it's for, but if the sticker wasn't there the easiest way to tell is look at the length of the pad on the shoe. The pad on this shoe goes from here to here. On this show it's all the way from here to here. This is the longer pad, this is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is the primary shoe, and that will always face the front of the trailer. So when you install this, that towards the front would mean that this is the left hand driver's side assembly. That should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 inch left hand driver's side electric brake assembly for a 7,000 pound axle.

These things are major time-savers! Bolt the whole assembly on, wire it up, and go! Can't beat the price either - would cost quite a bit more buying the parts individually. Made a huge difference in stopping power on my 18' Dively car hauler, 9990 GVWR. The brakes were 6 years old at the time, and had tens of thousands of miles on them - abusive miles too, with shoes seizing and dragging, electrical failures causing some to work 3x as hard as others, stop and go MA traffic, etc. While I was at it, I also grabbed 30' of Deka jacketed 2-wire 10 gauge brake wiring, and redid the whole system from the plug back. I also removed the drums, had them turned at a local garage, and installed brand new bearings, races, & seals. The improvement in stopping power was nothing short of amazing. I went from having my Tekonsha P3 on boost level 3 at 11 volts +, trailer UNLOADED, to running boost level 1 at 6 volts with 4,000 lbs. on the 2k lb. trailer! BIG difference in stopping power! 313993

So far so good! No problems with hanging brakes from being parked a majority of the time, on dirt, through wet and humid to freezing cold Massachusetts weather. Theyve also run through hundreds of miles of corrosive road salt. Had to make a few adjustments right out of the gate and am probably due for another after 2k or so miles, but thats normal break-in procedure. Well worth the price!

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Accessories and Parts
Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Will Dexter Brake Assemblies Fit on a Lippert Axle
  • You will have no problem using a Dexter brake assembly on a Lippert 7K axle. We have installed several Dexter brake assemblies on Lippert axles at our shop. Lippert and Dexter use the same standard mounting pattern and brake sizes. If you want standard brake assemblies, you could go with the Right Hand brake # 23-181 and the Left Hand brake # 23-180. I recommend stepping up to the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brakes, # 23-465 and # 23-464. The cost difference is very minimal compared to the standard...

  • Comparing the etrailer Electric Brake Kit and the Dexter Electric Brake Assemblies
  • In all honesty I would go with the etrailer Electric Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA for a few important reasons. They are self-Adjusting, and the brake pads themselves are fully bonded so that they last longer and offer more braking torque, plus they have less chance of cracking and crumbling due to the tapered edge circular grinding. Even though the Dexter Brake Assemblies, parts # 23-180 and # 23-181, are still durable, the etrailer kit definitely has more to offer in this situation. If...

  • Can Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Brake Assemblies Replace Standard Brake Assemblies
  • The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Brake Assembly # 23-464 and # 23-465 will work great as replacements for the exiting Dexter brake assemblies # 23-180 and # 23-181 on your trailer. The # 23-464 and # 23-465 are designed to fit 7,000 pound axles and do not require manual adjustment. I have attached an installation video as well as an initial setup review video for you to check out.

  • What Is The Difference Between the 6K and 7K Dexter Axle Electric Brake Assemblies
  • You are correct, the difference between the Electric Brake Assembly for 6K Axles, part # 23-458 / 23-459 and the Electric Brake Assembly for 7K axles, part # 23-180 / # 23-181, is that the 7K brake assembly has a stronger magnet, and also has a different compound on the brake shoes than the 6K electric brake assemblies for more stopping power. Both the 6k and 7K brake assemblies, fit the same axle. Yes, the 7K backing plates on part # 23-180 / 23-181, will fit on 6K pound axles.

  • Recommended Brake Assemblies For Gooseneck Trailer With Dual 7K Axles
  • With 7K axles on your trailer I recommend using brakes that are designed for your rig. Using 6K brakes on the trailer may not be sufficient. There are two differences between the 6k and the 7k brakes. The brake magnet regardless of the size magnet has more windings on the 7k which makes the magnet stronger. Also, the linings are constructed of different material between the 6k and 7k. The 7k material is more aggressive. Since price is a factor for you I recommend going with less-expensive...

  • Hub/Drums and Replacement Assemblies for Dexter Axle with Assemblies 023-181 and 023-180
  • We have exactly what you would need. For the right hand side you would want part # 23-181, for the left hand side part # 23-180. Then for hub drums that fit that axle you'd want the part # 42866UC3-EZ.

  • 5200 lb Axle Brake Assembly Torque Specs
  • According to Dexter Axle, the attachment bolts for a 5-bolt brake assembly should be torqued to 30-50 foot/lbs. If you don't have a torque wrench handy, if you tighten the bolts until the lock washers flatten out, you'll be pretty darn close to that range.

  • Which Brake Assemblies fit a 5-Bolt Brake Assembly Backing Plate on a 6K Axle
  • I called my contact at Dexter and spoke with him at length about this. Mobile home axles are traditionally weld-on brake assembles that cannot be replaced. If they are actually bolt-on both the 6K and 7K weight capacities will work. Part # 23-105 and part # 23-106 are left and right side 6K capacity brake assemblies. Part # 23-180 and part # 23-181 are left and right side 7K capacity brake assemblies. They have the same mounting pattern and size. The 5-bolt brake assembly pattern is...

  • What is the Difference Between the 7K and 6K Electric Brake Assemblies from Dexter Axle
  • There are two differences between the 6K and 7K brake assemblies. For the 7K, they use a semi-metallic compound on the brake shoes instead of the composite compound, and the magnets are stronger. This gives the brake assemblies more stopping power. They fit the same axles and spindle mounts, the only difference is how much weight the assemblies can safely stop. Choose the brake assemblies that have the weight requirement you need. 6K Left: 23-105 6K Right: 23-106 7K Left: 23-180 7K...

The highest rated electric disc brakes we offer are electric-over-hydraulic and for 3,500 lb axles. This is the Titan Disc Brake Assembly, part # T10HREKITBB. • Replacement Electric Trailer Brakes for Dexter 7,000 Pound Trailer Axle
  • For trailer brake assembly # 23-428 to fit the drum will need to have an inner diameter of 12-1/4 inches and a width where the pads touch of 2-1/2 inches. I have included a picture showing these locations in a drum. This brake also mounts on a 4 bolt brake mounting flange. The 12-1/4 by 2-1/2 is not a common size though. The most common size brakes for a Dexter 7,000 pound axle is going to be 12 x 2 inch that mounts on a 5 bolt flange such as # 23-180 and # 23-181.

  • Availability of Rust-Proof Electric Trailer Brake Assemblies for Use in Sea Water
  • Generally electric trailer brakes are not ideal for use in or near water. Boat trailers generally use either drum or disk hydraulic braking systems to avoid mixing water and electricity, which generally do not like each other. The best brakes for salt water environments are stainless steel disc brakes, such as # K2R35S from Kodiak. It would not be a good idea to mix brake components from different manufacturers since these parts would not have been tested together.

You would want the # 23-181 and # 23-180.

  • Should 7k Trailer Brake Assemblies be Used on a 6k Trailer Axle

The heavier duty assemblies have a magnet that's more sensitive which helps with heavier weights but when used on a lighter trailer they become harder to setup and not anymore powerful. Best option is go to with 6k brake assemblies like the part # 23-459 for the right hand side and part # 23-458...
