Video Transcript for Dexter Trailer Suspension 165649 Review

Speaker: Today, we're going to be reviewing part number 165649. This is Dexter's Cotter Pin with a 1/8 inch diameter. The over-all length measuring from end-to-end is going to give us a measurement of 2 1/4 of an inch. The amount of usable space that this offers measuring from the bottom of the eyelet portion to the shortest part here at the end of the pin, that's going to measure 1 3/4 of an inch. With this part number, you're going to get 1 Cotter Pin. It's made from a raw steel construction and that's going to do it for our review of part number 165649, this is Dexter's Cotter Pin with a 1/8 inch diameter, measuring 1 3/4 inches long.

Exactly what I needed to replace the cotter pins after servicing the wheel bearings. Etrailer has everything I needed and I didn't have to drive all over the town to get them. 374152

Cotter pins, they are what they are. These are the right size and impossible to find in my neck of the woods. I like that they are just the right size since most stores go from 1-1/2" long straight up to 2" long. I could not find 1-3/4" long cotter pins anywhere. etrailer has them for low enough price that I stocked up so that I always have enough on hand. 92212

Cotter pins have held up fine they are the exact right size and they are still in great shape when I repacked bearings the following year.

Ordered 2 Bearing kits for Spindle #84, plus D washers and cotter pins for my heavy duty homemade trailer. Fast shipping, bearings arrived well packages in good shape.. exact fit , no issues on installation.. very quite and smooth.. time will tell on quality and how long they last, but appear to be just as good as other higher priced bearings and seals I have purchased in the past.. Will order again. 350455

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Accessories and Parts

Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Replacement hub Parts for 3,000 lb Dexter Axle With Bearings LM67048 and L44649
  • There isn't a kit available, but I was able to find each of the components you need, which are available individually. Obviously, you will need bearing # LM67048 and matching race # LM67010, along with bearing # L44649 and matching race # L44610. For a grease seal you need # 58846, along with grease cap # 21-41-1 and cotter pin # 165649.

  • Should There Be a Washer on Trailer Spindle Between Spindle Nut and Outer Bearing
  • There really should be a flat washer between the outer bearing of your hub and the nut that holds it on. The washer protects the back side of the bearing from the edges and points on the back side of the spindle nut. The Washer For 1 inch Spindle, # SW1000, is typically used on spindles that have a castle nut, like # 165686, and a cotter pin, # 165649. A D washer, # 5-23, would be used on a spindle that has a flat side and uses the same castle nut and cotter pin setup. A Tongue...

You will need bearing # LM67048 and matching race # LM67010, along with bearing # L44649 and matching race # L44610. • Spindle Nut Recommendation for a 3,500 lb Axle
  • Since you have a 3,500 lb axle most likely the diameter of the threaded portion of the spindle is 1 inch. You will need to verify that. And since the spindle has a hole in it for a cotter pin you would need a castle nut. For that I would recommend the Trailer Spindle Nut # 165686. For a compatible cotter pin I would recommend the Cotter Pin part # 165649. The Spindle Nut Kit # RG05-100 that you referenced is for a different style spindle so I would not recommend it for you.

  • 12 Inch Slipper Spring Equalizer Kit Recommendation
  • The only 12 inch slipper spring equalizer we offer is the part # E4541-Z. For shackle bolts you would need the part # 166079, for equalizer bolts you would need # TRFA71063, cotter pin part # 165649, and for spring keeper bolts part # 7-7. We do not have all of this in a kit though.

  • Bearing/Race/Seal Kit for Boat Trailer w/ NOK AD7131E Seal 25580 Inner and LM67048 Outer Bearing
  • Although we don't have a kit that includes the bearings/seal all in one package, you can certainly obtain the parts separately. You'll need: # 25580 inner bearing and its # 25520 race # LM67048 outer bearing and its # LM67010 race # 21325 Double Lip Grease Seal (cross references to the NOK seal you referenced) # 5-101 spindle washer # 165649 cotter pin I'll link you to our FAQ article about replacing bearings, races and seals.

  • How to Find the Correct Idler Hub Replacement for Boat Trailer
  • In order to find the correct wheel bearings, you can take apart your hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you would need to use a digital caliper such as # PTW80157 and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings ride. You can use the photo I've attached to see exactly where you need to measure. I've also added a link to a...

We do carry the bearings you asked about as well as the race. I was unable to find a reference for the grease seal or a size, but according to the size of the other components I believe it is part # RG06-050.. • What is the Torque Rating for an Equalizer Bolt
  • Equalizer bolts, like the TruRyde Wet Equalizer Bolt, # TRFA71063, should be torqued to yield. Equalizer bolts are not given a specific torque rating because they should allow some movement of the equalizer. If they are torqued down too tight, the equalizer will have difficulty moving and that could bind up your trailers suspension. Simply tighten the bolts down until they are tight, but still allow the equalizer to move. Keep in mind, the cotter pin is not included with this bolt....

  • What Size Cotter Pin is Used with Replacement Axle Bolt Kit for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailers
  • I went out to the warehouse and pulled Replacement Axle Bolt Kit # Y8880180 to measure the cotter pin in the kit. The pin is approximately 0.11 inches thick whereas the hole is just slightly larger than 0.125 inches (1/8). The pin has an overall length of 1.64 inches. For a replacement you could use # 165649.

  • Bearing Kit Recommendation for L44649 Inner/Outer and Seal with 2 inch Outer Diameter
  • You would need to piece together a bearing kit for your trailer. For bearings you would want the # L44649 and then for a grease seal part # RG06-010, for races part # L44610. For a tang washer part # 5-101, and then cotter pin # 165649.

  • Replacement Spindle Washer, Castle Nut and Cotter Pin for Dexter Spindle
  • The linked page displays all the trailer spindles we offer and specs including weight capacity and thread diameter. All spindles we offer have a 1-inch-diameter threaded portion that accepts a spindle washer like # SW1000 and a castle nut like # 165686. For a cotter pin you can use # 165649.

  • Spindle Nut Kit Recommendation for a Dexter 6k Axle
  • Since the D60 Dexter Axle uses a cotter pin and castle nut the # RG05-100 would not be the correct kit for you. For that I would recommend the Trailer Spindle Nut # 165686. For a compatible cotter pin I would recommend the Cotter Pin part # 165649. People use channel locks typically for installation and removal of these castle nuts since they don't really get torqued down and the length of the spindle prevents most standard sockets from being easily used.

  • Is 10-19 Grease Seal Acceptable Replacement for 17413 Seal on Shorelandr Boat Trailer
  • According to my research, the 17413 grease seal would fit a 1.75 inch shaft, and has an OD of 2.565 inches. The 10-19 is very close, with an ID of 1.719 inches, but it's not close enough to be an acceptable substitute. Boat trailer manufacturers are well known for using oddball or proprietary parts. I was able to verify which seal you need by using the VIN number you provided. (Thank you!)
