Video Transcript for Dexter Trailer Suspension 165649 Review

Speaker: Today, we're going to be reviewing part number 165649. This is Dexter's Cotter Pin with a 1/8 inch diameter. The over-all length measuring from end-to-end is going to give us a measurement of 2 1/4 of an inch. The amount of usable space that this offers measuring from the bottom of the eyelet portion to the shortest part here at the end of the pin, that's going to measure 1 3/4 of an inch. With this part number, you're going to get 1 Cotter Pin. It's made from a raw steel construction and that's going to do it for our review of part number 165649, this is Dexter's Cotter Pin with a 1/8 inch diameter, measuring 1 3/4 inches long.

Cotter pins, they are what they are. These are the right size and impossible to find in my neck of the woods. I like that they are just the right size since most stores go from 1-1/2" long straight up to 2" long. I could not find 1-3/4" long cotter pins anywhere. etrailer has them for low enough price that I stocked up so that I always have enough on hand. 92212

Cotter pins have held up fine they are the exact right size and they are still in great shape when I repacked bearings the following year.

What more can I say. It's a cotter pin. Well made. Serves its purpose. Shipping was quick considering that it came here to Canada. Excellent service from staff at etrailer. My only regret is the rather large exchange rate between $US and $CAN. If it weren't for that, I'd be purchasing a lot more from etrailer. Thanks 900042

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Accessories and Parts

  • Can I Use the Dexter Cotter Pin on a Lippert Axle
The Cotter Pin # 165649 can be used on a Lippert axle, so as long as you're replacing a cotter pin with a 1/8" diameter and 1-3/4" of usable space, this will work just fine for you. If your pin has different dimensions, just let me know what you're looking for and I can help you locate a replacement.

  • Torque Specs for Axle Spindle Nut, Suspension Hanger Bolts, and Lug Nuts for Trailer
It looks like you might be asking about a few different torque specs so I'll address all of them separately. For a trailer axle spindle nut like part # 165686 you will need to run the spindle nut down until there is no more side-to-side play in the hub and then back it off to the next notch so you can secure the cotter pin, like part # 165649, through the spindle. When it comes to hanger bolts like the Redline # 166081 there isn't a specific torque rating either as you just need to...

  • Bearings and Seal Recommendation for Dexter 3,000 lb Axle
Thanks for the picture of the tag on your Dexter trailer axle. From that I can tell you have a 3,000 lb Dexter axle. There isn't a kit available, but I was able to find each of the components you need, which are available individually. You will need bearing # LM67048 and matching race # LM67010, along with bearing # L44649 and matching race # L44610. For a grease seal you need # 58846, along with grease cap # 21-41-1 and cotter pin # 165649. For replacement brake assemblies you'd...

  • Should There Be a Washer on Trailer Spindle Between Spindle Nut and Outer Bearing
There really should be a flat washer between the outer bearing of your hub and the nut that holds it on. The washer protects the back side of the bearing from the edges and points on the back side of the spindle nut. The Washer For 1 inch Spindle, # SW1000, is typically used on spindles that have a castle nut, like # 165686, and a cotter pin, # 165649. A D washer, # 5-23, would be used on a spindle that has a flat side and uses the same castle nut and cotter pin setup. A Tongue...

Yes, the Washer Spindle Tongue part # 165863 will work with 7/8" diameter spindles. If you also need the castle nut and cotter pin as well we have these available as part # 165931 and part # 165649.

  • Replacement Axle Nut for 3500 lb Boat Trailer Axles
We have what you need! For EZ-Lube axles which are very common on boat trailers you want to use the Spindle Nut Kit for EZ Lube Axles part # RG05-100. This will have two nuts, washers and keepers. For the non EZ-Lube axles use the Trailer Spindle Nut 1" part # 165686 and the Cotter Pin part # 165649. these are individual so you will want two of each to have all you need. You can confirm these will fit on your axles by measuring your spindle and ensuring that your it has 1" threads...

  • Where Does Flat Washer Go
I was unable to find an order number so I'm not certain exactly what you are referring to, but in general a flat washer such as Washer For 1" Spindle # SW1000 will go between the outer bearing of your hub and the nut that holds it on, which essentially works to protect the bearing. These washers are used on spindles with a spindle nut such as Spindle Nut 1" # 165686 and Cotter Pin # 165649.

The bearings your Lippert 5,200 lb axle has are part # LM67048 and # 25580 and the grease seal is # RG06-070. For a cotter pin you'd need just the # 165649.

  • Correct Hubs-Drums and Brakes for Lippert 3,500 lb Spindle
The Lubed 4" Drop Spindle with Brake Flange for 3,500-lb Axle # LC12338, uses standard 10" diameter hubs and brakes, for which we have the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies # AKEBRK-35-SA. For the brake mounting hardware (nuts and lock-washers) you can use part # BRKH10B. • Recommended Spindle Nut and Washer To Use With Bearing Kit for #84 Spindles
If you have Dexter EZ-Lube Axles, the Spindle Nut Kit for EZ Lube Axles part # RG05-100 is what you need most likely. Otherwise, the Trailer Spindle Nut 1" part # 165686 along with the Cotter Pin part # 165649 is likely all you need. The Bearing Kit for #84 Spindles part # BK2-100 does come with a tang washer already.

This matches the bearing and seal info you listed, the bolt pattern, has an ez-lube cap for access to the grease fitting, and comes pre-greased so it's ready to install. You will need new castle nut part # 165686, and then for standard cotter pin # 165649, for a tang washer part # 5-101, and for a D washer part # 5-23.

  • 12 Inch Slipper Spring Equalizer Kit Recommendation
The only 12 inch slipper spring equalizer we offer is the part # E4541-Z. For shackle bolts you would need the part # 166079, for equalizer bolts you would need # TRFA71063, cotter pin part # 165649, and for spring keeper bolts part # 7-7. We do not have all of this in a kit though.

  • What is the Torque Rating for an Equalizer Bolt
Equalizer bolts, like the TruRyde Wet Equalizer Bolt, # TRFA71063, should be torqued to yield. Equalizer bolts are not given a specific torque rating because they should allow some movement of the equalizer. If they are torqued down too tight, the equalizer will have difficulty moving and that could bind up your trailers suspension. Simply tighten the bolts down until they are tight, but still allow the equalizer to move. Keep in mind, the cotter pin is not included with this bolt....

  • Spindle Nut Recommendation for a 3,500 lb Axle
Since you have a 3,500 lb axle most likely the diameter of the threaded portion of the spindle is 1 inch. You will need to verify that. And since the spindle has a hole in it for a cotter pin you would need a castle nut. For that I would recommend the Trailer Spindle Nut # 165686. For a compatible cotter pin I would recommend the Cotter Pin part # 165649. The Spindle Nut Kit # RG05-100 that you referenced is for a different style spindle so I would not recommend it for you.

There are several types of spindle washers available depending on the spindle configuration on your trailer. If you can't read the reference number of your outer inner bearing, you can always use a digital caliper to measure the diameter of the spindle where that bearing rides.
