Video Transcript for Demco Tow Bar Sentry Deflector Installation - 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler Unlimited

Ryan: Hey, everybody. Ryan here etrailer.com. Today on our 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JL, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install he Demco Century Deflector. Now whenever you're flat towing a vehicle, it's not uncommon for small rocks and debris to come up from under the motor home and scratch and damaged your front of your vehicle, which in turn will affect its overall appearance and resale value. That's where the deflector comes into play. It's going to help prevent any of those rocks or debris from coming up and hitting the front of our car.Now from just looking at this, you might be thinking to yourself, "Well, it doesn't look like it covers up a whole bunch and offers a lot of protection," but there is a reason that it is angled like this, and in fact that's what separates this one from many of the others on the market.

Since it's at this 30 degree angle, it's actually going to direct rocks and debris away from your vehicle. Now, in my opinion, this deflector looks very tough and rugged, and it's definitely more sturdy than some of the other ones out on the market, and just from feeling it and getting your hands on it, you can tell it's definitely built to last. Now, since the deflector is so durable and rugged, it doesn't mean that it's stiff as a board. It actually has some flexibility to it. Now what that's going to do is help absorb those impacts from any rock or debris and it's also going to have some give to it just in case that you hit a curb, it's not going to snap in half. Not only is this deflector going to help you personally, but it's also going to help out any motorists that might be traveling behind you, since all motor homes do essentially kick up some sort of small rock or to debris, and since this it's actually deflect sat down and away, anyone that is behind you isn't going to get hit with that same degree as well. Now, this deflectors only going to be used when you're flat towing and many of our customers actually wrote in that half flat towed without this type of deflector and experienced front end damage.

Well, they said that they made the switch and they're very happy with the results. Now, I do want to point out that this particular deflector does not work with every single flat tow setup. To make sure it isn't and issue and it's going to fit with yours, be sure to check our fit guide. Now if you have a Roadmaster or Blue Ox base plate, they do cell adapter kits which are sold separately, which will allow this to work with those. They also sell Demco extensions, that way if your base plate is to wide and you get that extension piece, you can make this wider to accommodate for your base plate. One thing that's really cool about this deflector is when you're done using it or you don't need it anymore, it's really easy to take off. Now, the first thing that you would do is disconnect everything, so we'll take off our safety cables, slide them through.

Get both our safety cables out of the way and then we can remove our six way plug, and finally our breakaway switch. Then from there, we'll remove this retaining clip. We'll just set that off to the side. Then on these handles, we're going to pull up to separate the center section from the two end plates. It makes it easier to take the top ones off first and then you can slide the bottom one. We'll take our center section and just set it off to the side, then you can grab each side plate and slide it out just like this.To begin our installation, we're going to have to assemble our clevis assembly.

Now on this particular setup, we're using the Demco Commander tow bars and the Demco tabless base plate. We're going to take our arm and our bolt that comes with our shield. It'll look like this. I'll have the least amount of threads out of the bolts in our kit. We're gonna take a flat Washer, our flat washer on the bolt. Then what we're going to do is take our connector and we're going to line these holes up with the holes here. We're going to set it just like that then just put our bolts through enough to have it stick out just a tad. Take one of our bushings, other plastic washers, get it through just like this. Now we can take the tow bar itself and we're actually going to put this bolt through this hole. Line everything up and just push the bolt through enough that it comes out of the other side of the tow bar, because what we're going to have to do is put another one of these plastic white washers on to just get him out flush. Take our whitewasher on the other side. This can be kind of tricky to hold everything together, so just take your time. Once you have it lined up, push your bolts through and that'll keep everything in place, and finally out to the other side. Now we're going to take another flat washer and finally a nylon nut and get it hand tight. All right, so now what I'm going to do is tighten up our bolt. Now, we don't want to get this so tight that we can't move it anymore, we just want to get a tight enough that there's a the little resistance in our pivot point. Just like that. The other side goes together exactly the same, so just repeat that same process. Now, you're going to want to go ahead and put your tow bars into the base plate. Now, you want to make sure that the longest end of the clevis is on top, just like this. Once you've verified that, you'll want to pull your motor home forward to actually lock your tool bars in.Now, we're going to want to take our left and right wings and slide them into the slots on our clevis. We'll line them up and push it into place. Now if you look at the back of our left and right plates, you'll notice these two keys, one at the top and one at the bottom. Now, the others are going to be for our center section pieces. You'll see there's some openings in this center section and what we're going to do is slide those onto those key ways. Kind of line it up. Line up the bottom one first and push down maybe an inch or two, and then that'll allow the top one to fall into place. Just push it all the way down until it's seated. We're going to do that for both sides. Now when I put my center pieces in and try to line everything up, I realized that they we're too wide. What we're going to do, each centerpiece, here on this shorter side where the three pre-drilled holes are, I'm actually going to take two inches off on each center section. Now, once we trimmed our panels, we put them back in the same position that we had them originally. Now that they fit in nice and tight, we want to make sure that all of our top pieces line up. Once we have them all lined up with each other, I just use a clamp to hold them in place. Now according to our instructions, we're going to drill six holes to connect our two center section pieces together. I'm going to go three on each side, one about here, in the middle, and at the bottom, and the same right here, there, and there. Now in all the holes that we just drilled, on the back side we're going to push in one of these T-nuts. That just goes in and you can use your hand to push it down flush. On the front side, we're going to take one of these truss screws. It's got a Phillips side on it. It's good idea to use a little bit of Loctite on the threads before we put it in. If you need some Loctite, you can pick some up on etrailer.com. Go ahead and get it started by hand, threading it into that T-nut that we just put on the back side. Then we can just use a Phillips head screwdriver to make it all snug. You're going to do that same technique for all six holes. With all six of our fasteners on, we can now remove our clamp, and then over here on the driver's side there's going to be a pin and clip that's attached permanently to our side panel. Now, there's going to be a hole right here that's already been drilled. We're just going to slide that pin through and clip that side together. Now, with all that being said, that will complete your installation. Now however, depending on your exact setup, you may or may not have to make an opening to get your seven to six way cable connected to the front, or your breakaway switch connected, and all of your other things. If you do need to make a hole to run everything through, what I did is I just used a 2" hole saw and cut that section out right where I needed to run all my lines. Now we'll take it out on a test course, and you can see how stable it is yet flexible when it needs to be. You can also see how well it's mounted to the front of the vehicle. You'll notice how much surface area it provides protection for us, giving us ample protection against any rocks or debris that may be kicked up from our motor home. We can also see when making an extremely tight turn, the deflector, it's not going to make contact with the back of our motor home. That'll do it for our look at and installation of the Demco Century Deflector on a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JL.

  • Will the Sentry Deflector for Demco Tow Bars Work With Roadmaster Tow Bars and Base Plates
The Sentry Deflector for Demco Tow Bars part # DM9523135 actually mounts to the base plates, not the tow bar. That said, if you have a Roadmaster Tow Bar then you likely have a Roadmaster Base Plate Kit and the Sentry Deflector for Demco Tow Bars will work if you use the Demco Sentry Deflector Adapter Kit for Roadmaster Base Plates part # DM9523027.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2015-2018 Chevy Silverado 2500
There are a number of parts needed for you to flat tow a 2015-2018 Chevy Silverado 2500, starting with compatible base plates. The correct fit will depend on if you have tow hooks or not. If your Silverado DOES have tow hooks, you need the Roadmaster MX Base Plate Kit # 3167-3 along with the Roadmaster Nighthawk Tow Bar # RM-676, which I like because of how easy it is to connect to the base plates and the fact it comes with integrated safety cables and LED lights. With this set up...

  • Vehicle Protector for Use With Blue Ox Base Plate and Demco Tow Bar on 2009 Honda CR-V
We do have an option for you that is going to protect your 2009 Honda CR-V, though the Blue Ox KarGard you mentioned does not work with your set up. Instead what you will need is the following: - Sentry Deflector for Demco Tow Bars # DM9523135 - Demco Sentry Deflector Adapter Kit for Blue Ox Base Plates # DM9523061 This will give you compatible base plate/tow bar/protection to keep your CR-V from being damaged. I have added links to video reviews for you to check out as well.

  • How to Protect a Toad from Chips or Scratches While in Tow
The Snoblock Snow and Ice Windshield and Wiper Blade Cover part # 288-06603 is not designed to be used on a moving vehicle. If used in this fashion then the chances of it tearing would be increased therefore I cannot recommend this. However, we do still have multiple ways of protecting your toad while in tow and not just the windshield portion either. For this, I recommend taking a look at Sentry Deflector part # DM9523135 if you have a Demco Tow Bar, the Guardian Rock Guard part # RM-4000...

  • How to Protect Flat Towed Vehicles Windshield/Paint
We have great products designed for exactly what you are looking for, but the Hopkins part # HM17529 that you referenced is only designed for snow and ice so it may not prevent damage from debris. Instead you'd need something like the Roadmaster Guardian Rock Guard part # RM-4000 which is designed to attach to a Roadmaster flat towing setup. If you could get back to me with the brand of flat towing setup you have I can check to see what the best solution would be for you. For example,...

  • Can Demco Sentry Deflector be Used with Blue Ox Base Plate/Tow Bars
The Demco Sentry Deflector Adapter Kit # DM9523061 that you referenced is designed to adapt a vehicle with a Blue Ox flat towing setup like what it sounds like you have so that it can be used with a Demco Sentry Deflector part # DM9523135. As long as you have a Blue Ox base plate to go with your Blue Ox Alpha tow bar # BX7420 that you mentioned having you'd be good.

  • Recommended Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2020 Jeep Wrangler
I recommend going with a Demco setup because they look good and are very easy to use after the initial installation. For a complete flat towing setup you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, vehicle tow bar wiring, a supplemental braking system, and possibly a high-low adapter. Here are the parts I recommend for your 2020 Jeep Wrangler: Base Plate - # DM9519336 (plastic bumper) Base Plate - # DM9519339 (steel bumper) Dominator Tow Bar - # DM9511008 (comes with safety...

  • Recommended Screening and Mud Flaps to Protect Windshield of Vehicle When Dolly Towing
The Roadmaster Tow Defender Protective Screening # RM-4750 can be mounted to your Sentry Rock Guard like # DM9523135 to keep road debris from being launched toward your tow dolly and CR-V. This is intended for tow bar use, but since you have a rock guard, it can be attached to that. Another option is to use the Rock Tamers Heavy-Duty, Adjustable Mud Flap System for 2" Hitches - Matte Black # ERT00108. These may even be used together if you have a long enough ball mount on your motorhome. I've...
