Video Transcript for Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connectors Review

Today we'll be taking a look at a Deka line of Heat Treat Butt Connectors, available in five and ten packs, in a variety of colors and gauges here at Etrailer.com. We have one of the butt connectors out of the pack, take a quick look at it. It's labeled twenty-two and eighteen gauge wires, and the center section here, the metal part, is the actual butt connector itself. On the outside you've got the nylon covering, and these two large ends are parts that shrink down after you install your wires. It's a good idea to use a good set of crimpers, and also make sure you have your wires stripped back to about maybe a quarter inch. Then just crimp it down, bring your other wire in and do the same thing.

Then we'll apply heat to the butt connector to shrink up the wires. It'll take up the openings and seal our connection from dirt and water. Ideally you want to use a heat gun. You can direct the heat with it. If you don't have a heat gun available a lighter works as well. Using lighters get it hot after a while so it may be a good idea to use a barbecue lighter instead.

Since you can't direct the heat with this you'll probably have to apply heat a little bit longer than normal for the top side to shrink up as well. We'll go ahead and show our heat shrink butt connectors in typical application. In this case it's going to be behind a trailer light. We'll apply heat to go ahead and shrink the ends down and make a seal around the wire. We'll go ahead and do a test run and verify we have connection through our butt connector.

That'll do it for our review of the Deka line of Heat Shrink Butt Connectors. .

This is an excellent product. The packaging was superior as I had 6 other items shipped at the same time. Everything secured in one box so no rattling around or damage. The instructional video made everything easy to understand. When I came to a dead end I reviewed the video, picked up what I had missed and proceeded right along. Highly recommend. 792485

I ordered this controller and additional parts from Laser. Before committing to buying, I asked him many questions. He answered them all in about a clear and concise way as possible while presenting a picture of how to install the device. It arrived today and I haven't started, but he also emphasized that I could call if I ran into any difficulties. I'll follow up when the job is complete. My experience in this context could not have been better. Michael 696587

I have never regretted using the weather proof electrical connection, because the heat shrink tubing ensures a tight, dry seal. Absolutely no problems electrically.

  • Prodigy RF 90250 Reads n.c. When Trailer is Connected to 2013 Volvo XC90
If you check out the instructions manual for your (discontinued) Prodigy RF 90250 it features a troubleshooting chart with common problems that people find. Among them is the n.c. signal that you referenced. I don't believe that you need a lamp out adapter as that has to do more with LED lights on your trailer causing your 2013 Volvo XC90 to read that a trailer light is burned out. What I recommend doing is to start off by using a Circuit Tester # 40376 to make sure that you have 12V...

  • Trailer Brakes Lock Up When Trailer Connected with 2016 Nissan Frontier
It sounds like the brake output (blue) wire and the 12 volt power (black) wire have been switched. This is a pretty common problem on Nissan's so much so that we have an entire help article on the issue which I have attached for you. The fix is very easy though, all you need to do is switch the blue and black wires at the back of the trailer connector. In order to do this I recommending the Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connectors part # DW05745-5.

  • How to Remove Old Butt Connector to Install New Trailer Tail Lights
When a butt connector is used to connect your wiring you will simply need to cut the butt connector off on the trailer side. You should be able to see some metal inside the butt connector that has been crimped down. Try to cut the wiring as close to that as possible so that you don't lose too much of it. Once the wire is cut just strip some of it back and use new butt connectors for the installation. I recommend using heat shrink butt connectors like part # DW05745-5 as they provide...

  • Installing Brake Wiring on a Trailer
I have attached a diagram for you to check out. This is taken from a helpful article on our site about wiring that I have linked for you as well. The Blue wire on the diagram is what you want to pay special attention to. If you can route it through a tube for more protect then that's what I recommend doing. The wire that should be used for the trailer brakes needs to be 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1. You can use Butt Connectors # DW05745-5 to make your connections. Simply splice 2 ends of...

If your pickup is the 2016 Ram 2500 that you chose for the fitguide then it is very unlikely that the issue is with your truck. Changing the 7-Way connector on your gooseneck trailer was a great starting point but it does sound like you are correct about there being a short. Checking the wiring on a trailer for a short is fairly tedious but it isn't very difficult. Whenever we see lighting issues it usually stems from a bad ground or a short somewhere. This can be the result of a bad 7-Way connector or wiring. Since you have exposed wires where you have done your splicing I highly recommend using some heat shrink butt connectors to get your wiring all sealed up properly. You can use part # DW05745-5 for the bigger 12-10 gauge wires and part # DW05744-5 for the smaller 16-14 gauge wires. These are heat shrink connectors which will seal around the...

Verify there are no kinks or bad spots on the wiring and no corrosion at the connection points. It is also a good idea to check the wiring connection to ensure that the butt connectors are secure. The reason that 10 Gauge # 10-1-1 or 12 Gauge # 12-1-1 wire is recommended for 10" brake assemblies, like part # AKEBRK-35-SA, is because they pull more power than the lights on your trailer. I believe the green wire you are referring to carries the right turn/stop lighting functions as you can see from the attached photo of a trailer side 4-Way. The 14 and 16 gauge wires are too small for the amount of power needing to get to the brake assemblies and they could potentially get too hot,...

Electric brakes, like part # 23-26-27, use 16 gauge wiring. So you need to use butt connectors large enough for the 10 gauge wire, like part # DW05745-5.
