Video Transcript for Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connectors Review

Today we'll be taking a look at a Deka line of Heat Treat Butt Connectors, available in five and ten packs, in a variety of colors and gauges here at Etrailer.com. We have one of the butt connectors out of the pack, take a quick look at it. It's labeled twenty-two and eighteen gauge wires, and the center section here, the metal part, is the actual butt connector itself. On the outside you've got the nylon covering, and these two large ends are parts that shrink down after you install your wires. It's a good idea to use a good set of crimpers, and also make sure you have your wires stripped back to about maybe a quarter inch. Then just crimp it down, bring your other wire in and do the same thing.

Then we'll apply heat to the butt connector to shrink up the wires. It'll take up the openings and seal our connection from dirt and water. Ideally you want to use a heat gun. You can direct the heat with it. If you don't have a heat gun available a lighter works as well. Using lighters get it hot after a while so it may be a good idea to use a barbecue lighter instead.

Since you can't direct the heat with this you'll probably have to apply heat a little bit longer than normal for the top side to shrink up as well. We'll go ahead and show our heat shrink butt connectors in typical application. In this case it's going to be behind a trailer light. We'll apply heat to go ahead and shrink the ends down and make a seal around the wire. We'll go ahead and do a test run and verify we have connection through our butt connector.

That'll do it for our review of the Deka line of Heat Shrink Butt Connectors. .

100% will and have ready reccomended etrailer!! I called because I truthfully had no idea what all I needed so I was hoping an expert would help me. My hold time was long, the recording told me approximately how long and it was accurate. Also, it's three weeks before the Fourth of July and everyone wants something to get road worthy. No big deal. Once Geoffrey was on the phone I was absolutely blown away. He was patient, understood exactly what I was looking for (even though I didn't) and was incredibly helpful in the phone. He took his time to make sure we were going to have everything we needed to get the job done and get camping. He checked to make sure we were ordering the right size, even when our owners manual was super confusing he assisted in how to figure out exactly what we needed. Shipping... Wow. We placed our order and less than 13 hours later it had been picked, packaged and was on its way to a shipping facility. We received it 2 days after placing the order at 7pm. We are close, but still, that's incredible! Completely satisfied with every aspect of this experience. 825156

etrailer products and service are excellent! With their helpful videos and staff (plus a little help from Curt Manufacturing and our teardrop trailer manufacturer (CampInn)) I was able to install electric brakes on the trailer, and a controller in my vehicle by myself. I had never installed electric brakes before. Everything works perfectly! 774207

The product arrived promptly as scheduled. The installation is simple: bolt the unit on the trailer frame with the supplied star washers and hook up the single power wire. The jack worked as advertised. Speed was typical for an electric jack. The quality of the jack could be better. The three housing screws were pushed thru the plastic cover. Repaired by removing the screws and reinstalling with small washers. The fuse holder, which is already installed on the power wire below the housing, is not water proof, which should be for an exterior application. Time will tell if the unit is better than my initial observations. Suggestion: the manual jack handle needs to be longer so it clears the top the of the propane tanks. 706226

Ordered 3 parts: RM-156-25; RM-156-75 and DW05745-10. All received very quickly, as is the case when I purchase from etrailer. More importantly, I get a 'live person' when I call for assistance and the service rep. is always knowledgable ( not an answering service that "will have someone call back". Time was spent with me answering all my questions and providing suggestions and opinions when I as for them, related to my project. Great company, great service - keep up the great work! 693098

Ask the Experts about this Deka Accessories and Parts

  • Connector Recommendation to Wire in Trailer Brakes
You can use butt connectors like the part # DW05745-10 or if you have a soldering iron you can solder the connections and then wrap the connections in electrical tape like part # DW04367. The butt connectors have a nylon insulation that you can apply a heat gun to which will also insulate the connection. If this is a boat trailer it's important to make the connections as waterproof as possible.

  • Adding a Trailer Battery to an Enclosed Cargo Trailer
Start with mounting a battery. Since the trailer is enclosed, it would be a good idea to mount it on the trailer frame using a battery box like # 329-HM318BKS. Next, you will need to have the right kind of connectors on the truck and trailer. I would use a 7-Way RV style if you do not already have them on the truck and trailer. There is a 12 volt circuit on a 7-Way. You can run a wire from the 12 volt circuit on the trailer side connector to the positive battery terminal. The battery...

  • Right Trailer Tail Light Is Not as Bright As Left
It sounds like there may either be an issue with the ground, or on the power circuit of that particular wire. If the LED lights that you're using only have a single wire, they're going to ground via the mounting hardware so you'll want to verify that they are firmly attached to the trailer. If you've got a ground wire for all of the lights and other electrical functions on the trailer, you'll want to make sure that it is firmly connected to a paint and rust free spot on the trailer's frame....

  • Ring Terminal Butt Connector Availability
I really wish we did, but the largest ring terminal wire gauges we carry is 10 gauge like the part # 44-5310A for a 3/16 inch ring diameter, # 44-5356A for a 5/16 ring diamter, or a part # DW05705-1 for a 3/8 inner diameter. For an excellent airtight and waterproof sealant for your wiring connections I would recommend the Deka Self-Fusing Auto Tape # DW04367.

  • Is It Safe To Add Electric Brakes To A Boat Trailer
Sure you can! A lot of boat trailer manufacturers put electric brakes on their trailers without any issues. We do recommend disconnecting the trailer wiring from the vehicle before backing into water just to err on the side of caution. In the past a lot of trailer companies only used hydraulic brake assemblies on boat trailers because water and electricity don't mix well. However, a lot of components to trailer brake installation have improved over the years such as the casing on wiring...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation to Bypass 2018 GMC Sierra 3500 for EOH Style Trailer Brakes
The Dexter electric over hydraulic actuators don't have an adapter made for them that allows them to be used with integrated brake controllers like what your 2018 GMC Sierra 3500 has but even if they did I would not recommend that route as they don't work consistently. Instead you'd be best off with a new brake controller that has an EOH mode such as the P3 part # 90195 which we know will work flawlessly. You'll need the install harness # 3016 as well. First you will cut the blue wire...

  • Replacing Electric Brakes Shoes vs. Complete Brakes on 2005 Keystone Cougar
If you measured the width of your trailer's electric drum brake shoes as 2-inches this should be fine as long as the brakes' diameter is 12-inches. Such 12 x 2-inch electric drum brakes are quite popular on RVs like your 2005 Keystone Cougar. This size electric drum brake is suitable for axles rated from 5200-lbs to 7000-lbs and these are what are typically supplied on travel trailers.
