Video Transcript for Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connectors Review

Today we'll be taking a look at a Deka line of Heat Treat Butt Connectors, available in five and ten packs, in a variety of colors and gauges here at Etrailer.com. We have one of the butt connectors out of the pack, take a quick look at it. It's labeled twenty-two and eighteen gauge wires, and the center section here, the metal part, is the actual butt connector itself. On the outside you've got the nylon covering, and these two large ends are parts that shrink down after you install your wires. It's a good idea to use a good set of crimpers, and also make sure you have your wires stripped back to about maybe a quarter inch. Then just crimp it down, bring your other wire in and do the same thing.

Then we'll apply heat to the butt connector to shrink up the wires. It'll take up the openings and seal our connection from dirt and water. Ideally you want to use a heat gun. You can direct the heat with it. If you don't have a heat gun available a lighter works as well. Using lighters get it hot after a while so it may be a good idea to use a barbecue lighter instead.

Since you can't direct the heat with this you'll probably have to apply heat a little bit longer than normal for the top side to shrink up as well. We'll go ahead and show our heat shrink butt connectors in typical application. In this case it's going to be behind a trailer light. We'll apply heat to go ahead and shrink the ends down and make a seal around the wire. We'll go ahead and do a test run and verify we have connection through our butt connector.

That'll do it for our review of the Deka line of Heat Shrink Butt Connectors. .

I have found that the 16-14 Gauge Deka Heat aren't quite as good as their larger 12-10 Gauge counterparts. They still work very well, but the heat shrink shielding is a bit thinner and seems to split easier when making a crimp, and had experiences where the connecter wouldn't grab a 16-gauge wire on the first try. All total I've had an approximate 20% failure rate with this gauge connecter which I feel is a bit high considering their price point. I will use them again in wet use applications, but would like to see some improvements. 421381

My order was simple, some heat shrink and a few heat shrink butt connectors, no surprise that what I ordered is what was sent. The surprise I did get it how fast the order was processed and shipped. Shipping throughout the country right now is hit or miss- I’ve got an order from a major U.S. distributor for some simple tools, placed 2 weeks ago and still being “processed”...this order with etrailer was like 4 days, including a weekend, from when I clicked submit til it was in my mailbox. That’s outstanding! Thank you! 786068

Because I just received my product, what I am really reviewing is the process for selecting it and the customer service I received. First, my order came very quickly. The part of the process that I appreciated the most was the videos available with each part to show installation. They made it very easy to know that I was ordering exactly what I needed. 745190

I purchased electronic trailer breaks for my camper. These breaks are an excellent product at a great price. The tutorials that etrailer offers are incredibly helpful and a superb resource. Their customer service is also spot on. When it comes time to work on my boat trailer I know where I'll be going for parts and/or help. 692033

Good Product. I am a guy that likes a challenge although this wasen't much of one.. easy instructions, straight forward application and tools this was a fun project. my best advice would be if you're putting together a project of sorts make sure you speak to a rep before you order, that way all the parts you order work well together.. 657134

  • How To Wire A 4-Way On a Trailer With 5 Wires
I would love to help but the only way for certain to be sure you are connecting the correct wires together is to test for function. In order to do this for the trailer you will need to apply 12 volt power to each wire to see which circuit this illuminates. This is the only true way to determine the correct functions as trailer manufactures can use different color wires sometimes and the same can be said for the last person to wire the trailer. Please note when attaching two wires you really...

  • Should Butt Connectors On a Boat Trailer be Replaced with Heat Shrink and Solder
I assume you are referring to butt connectors and if that is the case then these can very well be the cause of your issue as they can trap corrosion over time and cause problems. If you test for power on the wire going into the connector and then coming out, that should then let you know if power is passing through the butt connector. If it is not then I prefer to solder and heat shrink wires together as this creates the best bond but we also have heat shrink butt connectors like part #...

  • Replacement 4-Way Trailer Connector and Ground Wire
The white wire on a 4-way trailer connector is usually for the ground. The reason your lights are not working is because this connection is severed. If you cannot re-attach the wire using a butt connector like part # DW05744-5 then you can replace the 4-way with part # HM48192. If a new ground wire needs to be ran you can use part # DW02359-1 (per foot), part # DW05737-1, and part # FA1131822. The ring terminal will need to be attached to a bare metal surface free of paint. I have attached...

  • How to Install a Brake Controller on a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche
In order to install a Hopkins Reliance Brake Controller on your 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche you will need to first look under the dash next to the emergency brake pedal for a set of four blunt cut wires. They should be taped together and could also have some wire loom on them so you will want to look closely. These wires are for the brake controller and you will need to hardwire them using butt connectors like part # DW05744-5. The dark blue wire on the vehicle is for the brake output...

  • How to Make Custom Adapter to Install Redarc Tow Pro Elite on 2020 Toyota 4Runner
You are correct, there isn't a custom wiring adapter available that would have a plug to connect to the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller # 331-EBRH-ACCV2 on one end and another plug to match the factory brake controller port on your 2020 Toyota 4Runner on the other end. Fortunately, there's a simple way to make one. • Why is 10 or 12 Gauge Wire Recommended for Electric Brake Assemblies
The reason that 10 Gauge # 10-1-1 or 12 Gauge # 12-1-1 wire is recommended for 10" brake assemblies, like part # AKEBRK-35-SA, is because they pull more power than the lights on your trailer. I believe the green wire you are referring to carries the right turn/stop lighting functions as you can see from the attached photo of a trailer side 4-Way. The 14 and 16 gauge wires are too small for the amount of power needing to get to the brake assemblies and they could potentially get too hot,...

  • How to Rewire Vintage Trailer with 7-Way Connector and Parts Needed
Most of us aren't electricians, but that doesn't mean wiring a trailer is beyond us. It will take a little bit of time, but I wouldn't consider it a difficult DIY project by any means. So, to wire your 1977 Serro Scotty vintage camper, I recommend using the following parts: - Mighty Cord 7-Way RV-Style Trailer Connector # A10-7W6 (6 ft long) - this is a high quality molded trailer connector with corrosion resistant terminals. - etrailer Trailer Wiring Junction Box - 7 Terminal # e99009 ...

Yes! The Hopkins Plug-N-Tow # 40185 is a plug and play solution for replacing the factory 4-Way on your 2006 Ford F-150. To add a 7-Way/4-Way connector you would then need the Hopkins # 37185. This connects directly to the 4-Way and then has additional wires that you can connect to wiring run to the rear of your pickup for it to be fully functional. Yes, the Opti-Brite LED Strip Light part # ILL70CBAWN is an exact replacement for your 2016 Winnebago Travato RV. The process to swap this out is super easy. All you need to do is pry the chrome housing off with some sort of pry tool which will then reveal the two screws that attach it to the trailer.
