Video Transcript for Deka 12 Gauge Black Primary Wire Review

Today we're going to review and install the Deka 12-gauge black primary wire, part number 12-1-1. It meets the SAE J 1128 specification, has a nice thermal plastic cover, and inside are copper leads. Here we can see the nice copper strands. They're good and durable, don't break easily. After I strap back, they can be twisted together, then routed or connected as needed. Our 12-gauge wire can handle up to 50 volts and has a max temperature of 176 degrees Fahrenheit.

It has many uses. Some typical uses will be wiring on trailers, general connections or wiring repairs. Now for this application we're going to add some 12-gauge wire, slide it into the butt connector, crimp it down. We're going to go ahead and wrap it up with some black electrical tape to help keep it clean from dirt, dust, debris, and moisture. That will do it for the review and install of the Deka 12-gauge black primary wire, part number 12-1-1.

Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Is Reverse Light Circuit Needed When Using the Curt Echo Bluetooth Brake Controller
  • If you purchased a 4-Way/7-Way Hopkins adapter like part # 37185 so that you can use the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 then you are correct about only needing to connect the 12V power wire for the brake controller (in addition to connecting the typical trailer light circuits and ground). The reverse light wiring is optional and is really only needed if your trailer has a separate circuit for the reverse lights. We actually created the kit # ETBC7L for people who...

  • Converting a Semi 7-Way Trailer Connector to an RV 7-Way Trailer Connector
  • There are a number of factors involved when converting a semi 7-way to an RV 7-way. Semis generally use a 7-pin round pin socket, similar to # PK11720. And RV style 7-way uses blades, like # PK12706. We do not offer any pre-made adapters to make this conversion that will carry all of the electrical functions required by the RV. Another thing to be aware of is fifth wheel trailers use a combined wiring system where the brake lights and turn signals are on circuit. Your semi connector...

This is shown by the arrow in the linked photo of the complete SMI kit. This individual item is offered as a replacement part # SM99612. For extra wire use # 12-1-1. This light does not electrically integrate into the actual motorhome display but it could be physically placed there if space allows. Please refer to...

  • Adding a Brake Controller to a 2017 Ford Explorer XLT with Factory Tow Package
  • If your trailer has electric brakes then I highly recommend using a brake controller to decrease stopping distances when towing and to reduce wear and tear on the 2017 Ford Explorer's brakes. Your Explorer with tow package should include a 7-Way trailer connector which is needed for electric brakes. But also check the glove box for a Ford brake controller harness which they may or may not have included. If you do have the factory brake controller harness then the amount of installation...

  • Wiring for Curt Echo Mobile Wireless Brake Controller and Adding Electric Brakes to a Trailer
  • The Curt Echo Brake Controller part # C51180 is a great choice because of its convenient and simple installation. The 7-way connector that you mention part # A10-7084VP pugs into the 4-way connector you purchased part # C56217. The white wire from the 7-way plug needs to be grounded to a clean bare metal surface on the vehicle's frame. You are correct, the black wire from the 7-way connector needs to be extended from the plug into the engine cavity and to a 40 amp circuit part # 9510...

  • How to Power Interior Lights of an Enclosed Trailer
  • The best way for you to power the interior lights of your enclosed trailer is with a mounted 12V battery. To do this, mount the battery with a battery box like # TLA7708R and use a junction box # 38656 to tap into your 7-way. You will also need ring terminals # 44-5310A, and wire # 12-1-1 to run to each light. You will also want a light switch such as the Pollak rocker switch # PK34308 or toggle switch # PK34571. You will be able to charge the battery when the 7-way is attached to your...

  • Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector to Use Prodigy RF Brake Controller on a 2017 Jeep Renegade
  • You nailed it! Since you already have a 4-Way on your 2017 Jeep Renegade Latitude then you would just need the 4- to 7-Way adapter like you said, # 37185. The Prodigy RF # 90250 needs the 12 volt circuit to be functional on the 7-Way but not the blue brake output wire or purple reverse light wire so you can cap those off as you said. The 40 amp circuit breaker # 9510 is usually what we recommend on a 12 volt circuit so that will work too. For wire to go to the battery from the 7-Way...

  • How to Upgrade 4-Pole Wiring to Allow Use of Trailer Reverse Lights
  • If the reverse light you are adding to your boat trailer is a single-function light like # BUL002CB (not a combination tail and reverse light like # STL68RB) and it has two wires, red and black, it should not matter which one you connect to ground. This is easy enough to check just by briefly connecting the light wires to your vehicle's battery; try it both ways (red to battery positive and red to battery negative) and see if it functions the same way with both wiring options. • How to Install a Brake Controller in a 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 with Factory 7-Way Connector
  • There isn't a custom brake controller wiring harness available for your 1994 Dodge Ram 1500. It is possible that Dodge makes one that will fit your truck but as far as an aftermarket one none are available for the 1994 models. A brake controller would have to be partially hardwired in. The custom harnesses are only confirmed to fit 1995 and later models. To install the controller you will just need about 25 feet or so of wire # 12-1-1, sold by the foot, and a 30 amp circuit breaker #...

  • Troubleshooting Electric Trailer Brakes When Controller is Adjusted Up All the Way
  • It sounds like you have adjusted the brake output on your controller but may need to perform some other maintenance for your brakes to work properly. If you have a Prodigy brake controller, you most likely have the original or the P2 # 90885. To test your controller, you can use a circuit tester like # ALL640595 to test the brake output pin of your 7-way at the 5 o'clock pin while using the manual override. If this increasingly gets stronger, your brake controller is not the issue. ...

To diasable your factory controller, you will have to make a couple of cuts and connections. I've attached and article to assist. First you will cut the blue wire on the plug-in wiring adapter and connect it to enough 12-gauge blue wire to reach the rear of the truck using # 12-1-1 sold by the foot. • Recommended Wire Gauge for Wiring Electric Brakes on Trailer
  • For your flat bed trailer, I recommend using 12 gauge wire like # 12-1-1 at the minimum, but preferably 10 gauge wire like # 10-1-1. Both of these wires are sold by the foot, so you can order the exact length you are needing. If you were to use a thinner gauge wire than this, the 12V power needed to activate the electric brakes may be enough to overload the wires and cause them to overheat. I have attached an article on adding electric trailer brakes to a trailer that you might also...

  • Since you are using the Prodigy RF brake controller # 90250 you will only need to have the 4-Way plugged into the adapter, the white wire grounds to the vehicle frame, and the black wire needs to have power because that is where the RF gets its power. The blue and yellow wires on the adapter, # C57674, will not be used for the RF. I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118551 which gives you basic trailer light functions and draws power directly from your battery. Depending on how you route the power wire to the battery you may need some additional wire with part # 12-1-1 and connectors with part # 05732-2. Starting off you will need to install a 4-way on your E-350. I recommend going with the T-One # 118551 as we have found Tekonsha to be the most reliable and this kit includes wiring that runs up to the battery so that your trailer doesn't pull power from the light circuits on your E-350.
