Video Transcript for Deka 12 Gauge Black Primary Wire Review

Today we're going to review and install the Deka 12-gauge black primary wire, part number 12-1-1. It meets the SAE J 1128 specification, has a nice thermal plastic cover, and inside are copper leads. Here we can see the nice copper strands. They're good and durable, don't break easily. After I strap back, they can be twisted together, then routed or connected as needed. Our 12-gauge wire can handle up to 50 volts and has a max temperature of 176 degrees Fahrenheit.

It has many uses. Some typical uses will be wiring on trailers, general connections or wiring repairs. Now for this application we're going to add some 12-gauge wire, slide it into the butt connector, crimp it down. We're going to go ahead and wrap it up with some black electrical tape to help keep it clean from dirt, dust, debris, and moisture. That will do it for the review and install of the Deka 12-gauge black primary wire, part number 12-1-1.

Ask the Experts about this Deka Accessories and Parts

Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Is Reverse Light Circuit Needed When Using the Curt Echo Bluetooth Brake Controller
  • If you purchased a 4-Way/7-Way Hopkins adapter like part # 37185 so that you can use the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 then you are correct about only needing to connect the 12V power wire for the brake controller (in addition to connecting the typical trailer light circuits and ground). The reverse light wiring is optional and is really only needed if your trailer has a separate circuit for the reverse lights. We actually created the kit # ETBC7L for people who...

  • Why is 10 or 12 Gauge Wire Recommended for Electric Brake Assemblies
  • The reason that 10 Gauge # 10-1-1 or 12 Gauge # 12-1-1 wire is recommended for 10" brake assemblies, like part # AKEBRK-35-SA, is because they pull more power than the lights on your trailer. I believe the green wire you are referring to carries the right turn/stop lighting functions as you can see from the attached photo of a trailer side 4-Way. The 14 and 16 gauge wires are too small for the amount of power needing to get to the brake assemblies and they could potentially get too hot,...

  • The SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # SM99251 includes an LED monitor light for the motorhome to provide visual confirmation of braking in the toad. This is shown by the arrow in the linked photo of the complete SMI kit. This individual item is offered as a replacement part # SM99612. For extra wire use # 12-1-1. This light does not electrically integrate into the actual motorhome display but it could be physically placed there if space allows. Please refer to...

  • 2017 Wrangler Unlimited 75 Ann Edition Toad for 2016 Dynamax Grand Sport with 7 Pole Round Connector
  • I have a solution for you that will still allow you to use the Roadmaster Nighthawk # RM-676 . Because your Dynamax Grand Sport has this 7 pole round connector, you're going to have to do some wiring work; there isn't a tow bar available that will have a matching 7 pole connector required to connect directly to your RV. Below you will find a list of parts that you'll need and then below that I will quickly explain how they're all going to work together. I'm also attaching a couple of...

  • How To Add Power Wire for MaxxFan Deluxe Vent with Fan
  • The MaxxFan Deluxe Roof Vent w/ 12V Fan, Thermostat, and Remote - Powered Lift - 10 Speed - Smoke # MA00-07500K requires 12V power at 5 amp draw. Since you are installing in a location that doesn't have power wires run, you will need to run a power wire like # 12-1-1 or # 10-1-1 (sold by the foot) to your battery or to another 12V power source that can handle that draw. There is a good chance the bathroom fan or a light could be a good tie in point as long as you tie in prior to a switch. You...

  • I'm happy to help. You can use the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit # ET7WK to connect your trailer lighting. You can use the attached diagram to help you with color and function on the trailer side. I recommend using the 12 Gauge Black Primary Wire - per foot # 12-1-1. You can use ring terminals # DW05705-1 and butt connectors like # DW05745-10. You can use 16 gauge wire like # 16-4B-1 along with ring terminals # DW05737-1 and butt connectors # DW05744-5. • Wiring for Curt Echo Mobile Wireless Brake Controller and Adding Electric Brakes to a Trailer
  • The Curt Echo Brake Controller part # C51180 is a great choice because of its convenient and simple installation. The 7-way connector that you mention part # A10-7084VP pugs into the 4-way connector you purchased part # C56217. The white wire from the 7-way plug needs to be grounded to a clean bare metal surface on the vehicle's frame. You are correct, the black wire from the 7-way connector needs to be extended from the plug into the engine cavity and to a 40 amp circuit part # 9510...

  • How To Ground Trailer Tail Lights Without a Ground Wire To a Wooden Surface
  • The Standard Trailer Light Kit with 25' Wire Harness part # TL29BK as I am sure you noticed grounds via the mounting hardware therefore there is not a singular ground wire. In order to attach this light to a wooden surface you will need to run a ground wire yourself up to the trailer tongue using the mounting studs on the back with ring terminals part # DW05705-1 and wire part # 12-1-1. You will also need ring terminals # 44-5310A, and wire # 12-1-1 to run to each light. You will also want a light switch such as the Pollak rocker switch # PK34308 or toggle switch # PK34571. • To start, I don't think the Hopkins # HM40975 is going to accomplish what you're wanting to do without adding some extra parts since it's really just a socket without any wiring; I would instead recommend that you use the # ETBC7L since it comes with all of the wiring, relays, butt connectors, 4 way and 7 way connector, and will allow you to retain use of your 4 way round plug in the future. The main catch is that you'll want to use the Adapter 4 Round to 4 Flat # 47465 to plug into the...

This is easy enough to check just by briefly connecting the light wires to your vehicle's battery; try it both ways (red to battery positive and red to battery negative) and see if it functions the same way with both wiring options. Starting off you will need to install a 4-way on your E-350. I recommend going with the T-One # 118551 as we have found Tekonsha to be the most reliable and this kit includes wiring that runs up to the battery so that your trailer doesn't pull power from the light circuits on your E-350. You may need additional wire # 12-1-1 and some butt...

  • Recommended Wire Gauge for Wiring Trailer Brakes
  • I recommend using at minimum a 12 gauge wire like # 12-1-1, but preferably 10 gauge wire like # 10-1-1. When you try to run 12v power for electric brakes through a thinner 14 gauge wire to power something like your brakes it overloads the wire and causes overheat. Once overloaded, the copper wires heat up so much that it could melt the insulation in the 14 gauge wire and end up causing a short.

The monitor also plugs in to the 12V outlet in your vehicle to give the monitor and the receiver within that unit the power it needs. The camera power can be drawn from any 12V connection. So you can connect it...

I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118551 which gives you basic trailer light functions and draws power directly from your battery. Depending on how you route the power wire to the battery you may need some additional wire with part # 12-1-1 and connectors with part # 05732-2.
