Video Transcript for Review of Deka Wiring Parts - 22-18 Gauge Butt Connectors - 05730-5

Ellen: Hey everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com and today we're going to be taking a look at the 22 to 18 gauge butt connectors. These are going to allow you to connect to ends of a very small thin wire like this one that I have here. These are going to be common in any system that uses multiplexing. That's becoming a much more common system of wiring, as there's more and more computerized things in vehicles, those wires get smaller so that they're able to minimize the amount of wires that are in your vehicle. So now we have multiple signals going over one wire, but a lot of times those signals can be going over a very thin wire.So you need to get these connected, you need a small butt connector to make sure that it gets a good bite on that wire.

If you try to use something that's bigger, it's just going to have more of a gap and it's not going to hold tight. So this is going to be the piece that you need, I will show you how to connect the two ends together. So I've got my very thin wire here, this is probably a 20 or 22 gauge, so really thin wire. I'm just going to strip back about a quarter of an inch of the insulation on this wire, that way we can actually get our connection made. Do that on both ends.

Going a little bit more than a quarter inch on that side. I'm going to match it up here on the other and then it's a good idea to twist the ends to make sure that your wires don't come out or there's not one straggler hanging outside of your butt connector. If that happens, it can sometimes cause a false signal, especially with these wires being so thin, even one stray piece of copper can affect the system. So I'm going to fold this over a little bit since it is just so thin to give my connector a little bit more to bite onto. Again, this works for up to 18 gauge, which is going to be a bit bigger than this wire I have here. So that's why I'm able to allow for this to fold over.

Again, just twisting it to get it in place, use my handy crimpers. You want to make sure that whenever you're crimping this down, you use the right slot. Some of these tools will have multiple options, so you want to use the one for an insulated butt connector since that's what this is. Non insulated can sometimes either not get a good enough crimp or punch through and actually break that insulation defeating the purpose of it. Be sure to look at the labeling on your tool.

If you're just using a pair of pliers, you should be fine. You always want to check your connection after you make it, give a little pull, make sure that the wires are all in there and it's not going to come flying out of there. Any wiring that you're putting on a vehicle, you have to think about how it's going to be vibrating as you are going down the road because you are going to be in motion, so you want to make sure that connection is nice and tight so you don't have to get into these wires again. A lot of times thinner wires like this, they can be in some hard to reach areas so the less you have to do this, the better. As you can see, we have our nice connection now. You could wrap that up with some electrical tape or a smart idea would maybe to get some heat shrink sleeve to go over that. Use a heat gun to seal around it to create a more watertight and sleeker look for your wire, but that's pretty much all there is to it.Again, you're going to get five of these connectors with this part number, so should have a few on hand for whatever your job might be. Well I hope this video has been helpful in deciding if this is the right butt connector for you. We do also have heat shrink butt connectors, so if you want something that's going to be a watertight seal, that's a great option because it's going to seal around that wire with just that butt connector. So if any of these connections are being made outside of your vehicle, they're going to be exposed to weather. I'd highly suggest getting those, and you can find those right here at etrailer.com, along with other sizes of butt connectors. Thanks for watching and we'll see you next time.

I received my wiring harness and other components on the day in which they were promised for delivery. I had already viewed one of your posted videos on how to re-wire a utility trailer so I promptly installed the wiring harness and connected it to the lights which I had already mounted. Everything worked great! This was the first time I had re-wired a trailer and was initially apprehensive about doing the job myself. Your video made the difference! I have marked your website URL for future reference. You will be my "go to" site for trailer accessories and information.

These little connectors work great! They are simple and quick to install. I used them to connect some new tail lights, which I also bought from this company, to a jet ski trailer. These connectors helped to solve a pre-existing short and provide a water resistant connection. A perfect transaction from an outstanding company. Thank you!

Products were as advertised, but the butt connectors were shipped in an open plastic package and it had came open and by luck they were still in cardboard shipping container, and other contents were in plastic bags with zip bag closures and were all together!

Item was exactly as ordered and of high quality. I had a question as to which of two wiring connections I needed for the lights I purchased. My questioning email was answered immediately and correctly. Good customer service.

These make getting a water resistant connection a cinch. Use in conjunction with the shrink tubing and you'll have doubly resistant splices that WORK.

  • Making Electrical Connections for Tail Light Wiring on a Boat Trailer
You can use Butt Connectors, like # 05730-5, that you have referenced. To keep out water, you can use shrink tubing around the connections. Or another possible option is to use some Liquid Electrical Tape, # SWC50122, on the connections, and follow that up with actual electrical tape for added protection from moisture and corrosion. The liquid electrical tape will create a waterproof seal which would be ideal for a boat trailer.

The Hidden Hitch 4-Way Flat to 6-Way Square Wiring Adapter, part # 30104, is intended specifically for Jayco trailers that use the 6-way square type connector. The adapter is wired to transfer tow vehicle lighting signals to the appropriate pins on the 6-way square connector to operate Jayco camper lights. For connecting your vintage Bethany camper to your tow vehicle with 4-pole flat connector you can fabricate an adapter harness from two parts. You will need to order parts # 37995...

The Optronics Submersible Trailer Tail Light, part # ST16RB, that you purchased will have 3 wires coming out of the back. There will be a white wire for ground, a brown wire for tail light function and a green wire for the right turn and brake function. There is not a molded plug available for this light and you will first want to determine the function of the two wires coming from the plug from the old light. There are two options, the two wires may be a ground wire and a right turn...

Yes, all of the lights in the # TL16RK Waterproof, Over 80 inch Trailer Light Kit will need to be grounded. The white wires on the tail lights are attached to the trailer frame, and the chrome bases provide the ground to the trailer frame through the mounting hardware for the side marker lights. • Recommended Path to Connect 4-Way Wiring Harness on 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander to 7-Way ETBC7
I can help you route your 4-way to the # ETBC7. First thing I would search the cargo area where your wiring harness connector is for a factory grommet to get the 4-pole through. If there is no grommet the best thing to do is to drill a small access hole to run the wires through. I recommend using the snap bushing grommet # SWC8055 and instead of splicing into your vehicles harness (voids the warranty), I recommend making the splice and reconnection in the 4-way to 4-way loop #...

  • Recommended Butt Connector for Installing Tekonsha # 18002 on a 2007 Lexus RX 350
You can definitely use the quick splices that are included with the Tekonsha 4-Pole 60" Long Vehicle End # 18002 that you referenced, but butt connectors secured by electrical tape would provide much more of a secure installation on your 2007 Lexus RX 350. I recommend using Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connectors # DW05743-5 for 22-18 Gauge Wire because they are much more secure and will last longer than standard butt connectors like part # 05730-5.

  • Trailer Running Lights Not Working When Connected to 4-Pole Harness # 18252 on 2007 Ford F-150
The first step for troubleshooting your 4-pole installation is to check that the lighting functions on the vehicle itself are operating correctly. This needs to be checked first since the part you referenced, Draw-Tite 4-Pole Hardwire Kit # 18252, relies on input signals from the vehicle lights to send output signals to the trailer. If the vehicle lights are not working properly you will need to get those fixed first. Once you have confirmed the vehicle light functions are all okay you...

  • What Parts Needed to Convert 4-Pole Connector on Tow Dolly to Match Motorhome Connector
If your tow dolly uses a 4-pole trailer connector this means it has only stop/turn/tail lights, but not electric brakes. If your Class A motor home uses a connector like # 37995 you can simply wire in the trailer-side part of this item in place of your existing 4-pole. This will provide a more reliable long-term connection than an adapter. Adapters are definitely convenient, but the additional contacts they introduce can cause connection issues if corrosion or contaminants get in. Wiring...

It looks like you have the lights and grommets, wiring harnesses, hardware, reflector, wire loom and butt connectors. But the butt connectors will be too large for the wiring harness. You will need 22 to 18 gauge 5-pack # 05730-5. The wiring on the wishbone harness is 19 to 20 gauge. You may also want to invest in some dielectric grease # 11755 to keep moisture and corrosion out of the electrical connections. • Hooking up Trailer Lights for Double Trailer Towing
It sounds like you want to tow a pair of trailers in line, and to hook up the lighting you will need to use junction box # 38656 along with 4-flat connector # 18172, which you can mount with brackets # 18144 and # 18140. You are going to run the lights from your camper to the junction box and then to the 4-flat connector. You may need extra wire # DW02923-1 and butt connectors # 05730-5 as well. I've added links to video reviews of these products to take a look at as well.

In order to install the Chevrolet Bowtie LED Lighted Vehicle Emblem part # RP86618 on your 2012 Chevy Silverado, our installers recommend using the Hopkins 4-Pole Loop part # HM48145 along with two packs of the 22-18 Gauge Butt Connectors part # 05730-5. With this in mind the Deka Butt Connectors # 05730-5 that you also mentioned will work great, as it is designed for 22 to 18 gauge wire. It includes 5 connectors. For a more secure and durable connection you might also consider heat shrink butt connectors like # DW05743-5 instead. These will also work with the Wesbar harness and includes 5 connectors.
