Installation of Curt Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Curt electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. When this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

This adapter plugs into the port on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, and it is taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

No hardwiring is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the factory port, you simply plug the other end of the adapter directly into your electric trailer brake controller. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee we're going to install the CURT Discovery brake controller, part number C51120. We're going to use this in conjunction with the CURT brake controller direct fit pigtail, part number C51446. Now to begin our install we're first going to take the direct fit pigtail with the matching plug and plug directly into the manufacturer's brake controller tow port. Once we click and lock it in place we can go ahead and route the pigtail. Keep in mind to stay away from any moving components such as the gas, brake, or parking brake pedal. Once I have it routed into position, simply use a zip tie to secure it as necessary. To be in position you'll route it near where you're going to mount your brake controller.

Also, once I secure the wiring harness I'm going to go ahead and cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up the install look. We'll start with the brake controller mounting bracket. We'll use the self-threading screws provided with the install kit to secure the bracket here at the bottom of the dash. Now once we have our bracket mounted and secured we'll go ahead and attach the brake controller to the bracket. Again, we'll use the screws provided. There are two, one for each side of the bracket, that will go into the pre-drilled holes here in the side of the brake controller.

Go ahead and get them both started finger tight and then tighten them down. There, now once we have the brake controller secured we'll take the pigtail here in the back of the brake controller and plug it into our direct fit wiring harness. We'll take the remaining portion of the pigtail and wiring and secure it underneath the dash. Now once our wiring is secured underneath the dash we're ready to go ahead and test our new brake controller. Now to test the brake controller I'm going to go ahead and plug in my trailer with trailer braking. This will allows us to put a load onto the brake controller, and when we hit the pedal you can see that we are applying power to our trailer brakes.

To adjust the power we can simply use the thumb wheel to turn it up or down as needed for our load on the trailer. Then for situations when you need to slow the trailer down or apply the trailer brakes without pressing the vehicle's brake pedal we can simply use the manual braking on the brake controller. Now once we're finished testing our new brake controller we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of our CURT Discovery brake controller, part number C51120, in conjunction with the CURT direct fit wiring harness, part number C51446, on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. .

  • Trailer Wiring Harness & Brake Control Wiring for 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee with/without Tow Package
If your 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee does not have a trailer connector at the back but is pre-wired with the factory tow package then you can add a 4- and 7-Way connector using # HM40975-11933. Please note: It may be necessary to see a local Jeep dealer to activate the tow package wiring circuit. Models that did not come with the factory tow package would need to use # 118727 to add the 4-Way and then # ETBC7 to add the 7-Way. For a brake controller, if your Jeep did come with the factory...

  • Custom Brake Controller Wiring Harness for 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Installation Location
For your 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the harness connection point is under the dash to the left hand side. I've attached a photo to help as well as a video of this installation. If you are using a Tekonsha Brake Controller like the Prodigy P3 # 90195 then you will use # 3045-P for your wiring harness. If you are using a Curt controller like # C51110 you will use harness # C51446. Finally if you are using a controller like the RedArc Tow Pro Elite # 331-EBRH-ACCV2, then you will use the...

  • Installing an Electric Trailer Brake Controller in a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica
Since you already have a 7-way trailer connector and a brake controller all you should need is the adapter to connect the controller. That's assuming the 7-way is factory installed. If you've installed it yourself, or had it installed aftermarket let me know. If it's a factory 7-way there's going to be a connector under the dash above the steering column not far from where it goes through the firewall. The connector you're looking for probably has a green cover over it. Once you...

  • Curt Brake Controller Adapter Harness for a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee
In order to install the Curt Discovery Trailer Brake Controller part # C51120 on a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee you will need the Curt Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers part # C51446 which makes for a plug and play installation. I have attached an install video for you on a similar model year which should be the same if not similar in regards to the plug location. The brake controller harness for a Jeep Grand Cherokee has not changed since 2011.

  • Parts Needed to Install the Curt Discovery Brake Controller # C51120 on a 2013 Dodge Durango
The Curt Discovery Trailer Brake Controller, # C51120, and the Custom Wiring Adapter, # C51446, will work on your 2013 Dodge Durango without splicing as long as your Durango came with a factory 7-way trailer connector at the trailer hitch. The 7-way trailer connector would indicate that your truck has the factory tow package, which would include a brake controller plug under the drivers side dash. You should see a gray connector just to the left of the steering column. If your Durango...

  • Time-Delayed Brake Controller Recommendation for 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with Tow Package
Time-delayed type brake controllers offer the convenience of more flexible mounting positions than do the generally better-performing proportional type, but proportional types will do a better job of stopping the trailer in unison with the Grand Cherokee. Proportional brake controllers also offer the benefit of reducing wear on both the trailer's and the vehicle's brakes. More info on this is included in the linked article on brake controllers. No one wants to drill holes in a new vehicle...

  • Parts Needed to Install a Curt Venturer Brake Controller in a 2013 Dodge Durango with OEM 7-Way
Since your 2013 Dodge Durango has the factory installed 7-Way, to install a brake controller you will just need the brake controller itself and the proper wiring harness to plug it into your Durango. If you want to go with the Curt Venturer, # C51110, then the only other part you will need is wiring harness # C51446. I have included a link to the installation details for you.
