Video Transcript for Curt Weight Distribution C17121 Review

Audio: Today, we'll be reviewing part # C17121. This is the Curt weight distribution shank. It's going to be rated at 15,000 pounds with a maximum tongue weight of 1,500 pounds. It's made from a solid steel construction with a really nice black powder-coated finish on it, and it's going to stand up well against rust and corrosion. This is designed to fit 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube openings. This portion here is going to be the portion that slides into the receiver tube of your hitch. You are going to push it in until you get your pin holes to line up with one another. Then, you'll need to install a 5/8" pin and clip or a hitch pin and lock. If you don't already have one of those, you can refer to our website. We have a lot of different options that you can choose from. This is going to offer a maximum drop of 6" with a maximum rise of 10 1/4".

It can be used in either the drop or rise position. There are a couple measurements to go over. The overall length, measuring from end to end, is going to give us a measurement of about 16". The actual shank length, measuring from the end of the shank to the back of the upright portion, is going to give us a measurement of 14". If we measure from the center of the hitch pinhole to the center of the mount holes for our weight distribution system, that's going to give us a measurement of 12". From the center of the hitch pinhole to the back of the shank is going to be 3".

Measuring end to end on this portion here, that's going to give us a measurement of 12". From the center of the top hole to the center of the bottom hole is going to measure right around 10". Then, the distance, center on center between each is going to measure 1 1/4". If I take a measurement from the center of the hitch pinhole to the back of the brace measuring to the bottom of the weld, it's going to give us a measurement of 2 3/4". From this portion here to the back of the shank, that's going to give us a measurement of 5 3/4". Again, it's a nice solid steel construction with that black powder-coat finish on it, and it is going to stand up well against the elements.

It's got the brace that's welded on right there. All the welds are nice, consistent welds. They are pretty smooth and very durable. They are going to really hold well. That's going to do it for our review of part # C17121. This is the Curt Weight Distribution Shank rated at 15,000 pounds.Video: etrader.com.

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4. The drop down works great with my bumper pull 24’ trailer. The trailer rows well and sits level. 603119

I couldn’t be happier with the product or the service. Shawn called me when there was an issue with delivery on the product I ordered and did an awesome job of finding an alternative. Outstanding! 500548

My first try at 'RV Trailer' but after purchasing a used 31' Holiday Rambler I discovered I didn't like riding a Disney Tea Cup while pulling the trailer. Seems my receiver at 20" was actually 24" making the trailer tongue too high. My first order was not due to ship until after I left, contacted customer support and Vanessa researched my problems: Rock Tamers Heavy-Duty mud flaps and 4 inch drop. With the C17121 I modified the Rock Tamers and gained my drop with an extra 1.5" or one hole left. The customer service was beyond belief and the product arrive on time, packed as if it was an egg which was hard to do with all that solid steel, lots of solid steel. Overall 10 star experience for me... 495337

I am happy with this product. It allowed me to use a weight distribution hitch and drop it down low enough to keep the trailer level. It is heavy and well built. First time out I pulled a heavy trailer 1700 miles and it performed flawlessly. 329573

Received the hitch bracket and packaging was sufficience. The tongue is significantly longer than the standand tongue was. The bracket provided the correct drop I needed for my loadleveling hitch. It would have been better to see a picture of the bracket with dimensions prior to purchasing so I would have know what I was buying. It does work as designed. 277858

Welds were not great. Voids and imperfect beads. Had to take to weld shop and pay to reinforce the welds. Welds weren't like the video or pictures. Didn't have time to send back because of impending Rv trip. So just reinforced the welds ground flat and repainted with Bed liner paint from rust oleum ???? 272768

Looking to add this to my setup since my stock shank only drops a total of 2". George J. You are the man! 236778

It fit perfectly on my lifted f250. Also it gave me enough flexibility because it's very adjustable so I'm very happy with the shank. I was able to use this shank with an existing weight alignment hitch that had circular bars for the weight distribution system. Thanks 147252

  • Measurements of Curt Weight Distribution Shank, 12 Inches Long
  • I have attached a photo showing the comparable measurements of the Curt Weight Distribution Shank # C17121 to those same measurements on the Curt Weight Distribution Shank # 17120 for you. These measurements include the shank length, the vertical height, the clearance to the gusset, and the hole spacing. The # C17121 shank is 1-1/4 inch taller than the # 17120 shank. When used with a Curt trunnion bar weight distribution system, the # C17121 offers a max drop of 5 inches and a max...

  • For your Husky Centerline weight distribution system I recommend the Husky Weight Distribution Shank - 10" Long - 4-1/2" Rise, 6-3/4" Drop # HT31518. For another cost effecient option, I recommend the Curt Weight Distribution Shank - 12" Long - 5" or 7" Drop - 1,500 lbs TW # C17121 which will also work well with your system.

  • 6 Inch Drop Weight Distribution Shank Recommendation for a Pro Series WD System
  • I attached a link to the right that details how to pick out the correct rise/drop ball mount for you to check out. First we need to determine exactly how much drop you need. It sounds like you need 6 inches of drop. Which for a shank for your Pro Series Weight Distribution system that can do 6 inches of drop you would want the Reese Weight Dist Shank # RP63971 that you referenced as it can do a max of 6-1/2 inches of drop with a round bar WD system. If you have a trunnion bar setup...

  • Rise and Drop of Curt Weight Distribution Shank # 17121
  • Curt measures rise and drop differently and they also round to the nearest whole number. We measure rise or drop from the top of the trailer hitch receiver opening to the top of the ball platform (or in this case to the top of the weight distribution head ball platform). And we do not round off the numbers.

  • Weight Distribution System Shank with At Least 6 Inches of Drop
  • To determine the correct rise or drop for a trailer you want to measure from the inside top of the receiver tube like you did. Then you want to measure from the bottom of the trailer's coupler to the ground. Both will need to be parked on level ground for a true measurement. Then you figure the difference. The shank that is included with the Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17052 you have has a maximum drop of 2-1/2 inches. For a shank with 6 inches of drop # FA92-02-4214....

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Shank to Tow 10,000 Pound Trailer with 2010 GMC Sierra
  • According to your calculations, the difference between the receiver and coupler height is 5-1/2 inches inches, therefore a 6 inch drop shank with a 15,000 lbs weight capacity, like # C17121, should work well. I have attached a video review of this shank and a FAQ article about choosing the correct ball mount and determining the correct rise/drop for you to check out.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Shank for 5-1/2 Drop
  • If the 21-1/2" measurement that you took on your 2018 Chevy Silverado is from the ground to the top of the inside of the trailer hitch receiver and the 16" of your trailer is from the ground to the bottom of your coupler then that means you need a drop of 5-1/2". The closest that we have to this measurement is the Reese # RP3215 which gives you a drop of 5-3/4" for a trunnion weight distribution (WD) system. You may also be interested in the Curt WD Shank # C17121 because it gives...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Shank With 10 inch Rise
  • Since you said the weight of the tongue on your trailer is causing your towing vehicle front end to lift up, it sounds like you do need weight distribution to even the system out. Weight distribution should be used when the trailer weighs more than 50 percent of the towing vehicle. I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains weight distribution you can check out. If you have determined you need a shank with a 10 inch rise I recommend the Curt Weight Distribution Shank,...

  • Which Weight Distribution Shank for 24 Inch Receiver Height and 17 Inch Coupler Height
  • Ideally, you'll want your weight distribution head to sit about 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches higher than the level coupler height of the trailer to compensate for trailer squat. Since the difference in your coupler and receiver height is 7 inches, I'd recommend you go with a shank that offers at least a 6 inch drop, like the Curt # C17121. This would put your trailer ball about 1 inch above level, which would be absolutely perfect.

  • Can the Curt # C17121 Shank be Used with a Blue Ox Weight Distribution System
  • Yes you can! All of our WD shanks, including the Curt # C17121 that you referenced, are compatible with other WD systems. The part where the head of your WD sits is 2" wide and the mounting holes are 1-1/4" apart on center. I have attached a review video for you to reference as well.

  • Compatibility of Curt Weight Distribution Shank with Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System
  • Weight distribution shanks from Reese and Curt Manufacturing both use the same 1-1/4 inch hole spacing. Ideally, you'd want the manufacturer of the W/D system and the shank to match, but if Reese doesn't offer the specific rise/drop you need, you can use a Curt shank. I've linked you some articles about weight distribution that you might find helpful.

I recommend the Curt Weight Distribution Shank, part # 17120. This will allow you to then buy a shank that would allow you to do up to 5 inches of drop like the part # C17121.
