Video Transcript for Review of Curt - Weight Distribution - C17100

Today we're going to take a look at the Curt 8-inch adjustable weight distribution shank. Now, this shank is designed to slide into your hitch receiver, and it does provide the attachment point for your weight distribution system's head assembly. This one here is designed for use with the Curt weight distribution systems. You have the seven holes here, so it'll give you seven adjustment points for attaching the head assembly to. The holes are spaced at 1.25 inches apart center to center, so it'll let you level your trailer with your tow vehicle. Those offer drop or rise positions to fit your application. It is a nice black powder coat steel, helps resist rust and corrosion, and if you notice, it is a solid shank, has the gussets for strength, and it's got some weight to it because it is solid.Application again, this is for 2 inch x 2 inch trailer hitch receivers.

Weight capacity is 15,000 lbs. Tongue weight capacity is 1500 lbs. Do want to give you a few measurements on this. The overall total height of this going to be right at 9.5 inches tall, and we had mentioned the holes. They are spaced, center to center, 1.25 inches apart.

Maximum drop, if it's used in the round bar system in this position is going to be 2.5 inches. If it's used with a trunnion bar system, it's 0.5 inch. Maximum rise, in other words if you flip it over, for a round bar system is 6 inches. For a trunnion bar, be 6.5 inches. A few measurements on the shank itself.

If we measure from the center of the hitch pin hole here to the center of the adjustment holes, you're going to be right at 8 inches. If you measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the vertical adjustment shank, it's going to be right at 7 inches. If you measure it from the center of the hitch pin hole from the furthest edge of this vertical adjustment shank, it's 9 inches. That should do it for the review on the Curt 8-inch adjustable weight distribution shank.

I needed a different rise Shank for my new RV than the one I had and the Curt 8" fell perfectly into the range I needed. The shank is solid steel and heavy and the holes look to be precision machined. Welds look hand done as there is a little sloppiness with some of them but nothing structurally detracting. You can use this shank in the up or down position so the description that only gives a small amount of drop or rise is a bit misleading. Just know that the max dimension will work for the up or down position. Powder coating looks good but I do't expect it to last as most of the paint on these things get scratched up in use. 489095

The product appears to be exactly what I needed. It arrived yesterday and I will switch out from my old hitch shank tomorrow. My old part was used on a taller truck that I traded off and just made the hitch ball too low. This product is definitely heavy duty. Thank you etrailer.com. 603568

I have the Pro Series Weight Distribution System w Friction Sway Control - Round - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW product PS49903. I pull a 5000# haulmark race trailer 24' with my 2012 ram 1500. I got the weight distribution system and it was great, but according to the instructions, I could not get my hitch ball to 21" at the lowest. So the ride has been ok but I id prefer the ball to be at 21", currently at 22" so I ordered this shank. It has the lowest holes that I could find, however only appears to drop the ball about 1/2". Probably not worth it for 1/2", but I care a lot about my cargo so I thought I would give it a shot. Mind you I have not installed it yet, just put it up next to my current shank and it looks like it would drop the ball1/2" 85044

Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Recommendation for Adding 2nd Friction Sway Control Bar to Trailer
  • To add a second friction sway control, you will need the second Pro Series Friction Sway Control Kit # 83660 and you'll need to weld a tab onto your trailer hitch ball platform like # C45822. The friction bar will simply be inverted on the left side, but that will not impact the function and is designed for use on either side. I've attached an article to assist and 2 bars are recommended on trailers over 26 feet long or if you simply want more sway control. The other option is to use...

  • Hardware Kit Recommendation for Attaching Curt Head part # 17107 to Shank # 17100

  • Shank with More Drop for Pro Series Weight Distribution System # PS49581
  • The shank that comes with Pro Series weight distribution system # PS49581 has a drop of 1-1/2 inches so for a shank that has 2-1/2 inches of drop you can use # C17100. But you may want to go with something that offers more rise/drop options just in case you need it in the future. For that I recommend # 17120. For a round bar weight distribution system it offers up to 5-3/4 inches of drop and up to 9-1/4 inches of rise. Both shanks listed above are compatible with your weight distribution...

  • Will the Curt Adjustable Weight Distribution Shank Accept 3/4 Inch Diameter Bolts
  • I spoke with my contact at Curt and the Bolt-Together Adjustable Weight Distribution Shank - 12 Inch, # C17100, does take 3/4 inch diameter mounting bolts. The measurement between the bolt holes from center to center is 1-1/4 inches. I have attached a photo of these measurements that may help out.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System with 5 Inch Rise for 2007 Toyota Sienna
  • For your weight distribution system, the rise is due to the shank itself. Most weight distribution shanks are able to be interchanged between manufacturers. For your application, I recommend the Curt Adjustable Weight Distribution Shank - 8" # C17100. This will give you up to a 6-1/2 inch rise using trunnion bars or up to a 6 inch rise using round bars. You will simply invert the shank to give you the height needed. To give you the correct system for your application, I need to know...

  • How to Adapt Older 1980's EAZ-Lift Weight Distribution System for New Dodge Ram 3500
  • Manufacturers of weight distribution systems do not test their products or parts with those from other makers so I cannot assure you that the set of spring bars you have from your 1980s system will fit into a head assembly from another maker. We do offer bolt-together WD shanks like # C17100 from Curt but this mixing of parts is not advisable for safety reasons as the resulting capacity would be unknown. Since you have had good use from your old system I suggest you choose a new WD system...

  • Which Weight Distribution Shank for 24 Inch Receiver Height and 17 Inch Coupler Height
  • Ideally, you'll want your weight distribution head to sit about 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches higher than the level coupler height of the trailer to compensate for trailer squat. Since the difference in your coupler and receiver height is 7 inches, I'd recommend you go with a shank that offers at least a 6 inch drop, like the Curt # C17121. This would put your trailer ball about 1 inch above level, which would be absolutely perfect.

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for a Horse Trailer that Allow Backing Up
  • The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use. Since you need a drop of 6 inches...

  • I went out to our warehouse to measure the Ball Mount Adapter for Convert-A-Ball Cushioned Weight Distribution Shank # BA-1 for you. The platform measured 11/16th inches which is the 3/4 inch platform they are referring to. I recommend the # BA-1 for your Weigh Safe 2" and 2-5/16" Hitch Ball w/Built-In Scale # WSUN-1. These two parts will work very well together. That platform is designed to work with the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned Weight Distribution Shank for 2" Hitches # AMAC1,...

  • Curt Weight Distribution Shank Compatibility with Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System
  • The Curt Adjustable Weight Distribution Shank # C17100 will work with the # EQ37101ET which is the 90001000 system you referenced. That system is recommended for total tongue weights between 600 and 1000 lbs. That total tongue weight includes the loaded tongue weight as well as any weight behind the rear axle of your truck. If your total tongue weight is lighter than this with your current trailer, it will create a rough ride and you will want a different system. This system does...

  • Lowering 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver when Using a Motorcycle Rack
  • First you need to know that the use of an adapter to extend, reduce, raise, or lower the receiver will reduce the tongue weight capacity by 50 percent. So if the motorcycle rack you have is completely supported by the trailer hitch then the combined weight of it and the bike cannot exceed the reduced tongue weight capacity. So for example if the combined weight of the carrier and bike is 350 pounds then the hitch would have to have a tongue weight capacity of at least 700 pounds. In...
