Curt Accessories and Parts - C16550

Eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns with this non-binding slider. Provides 12" of travel from front to back. For use with Curt Q20 fifth-wheel trailer hitches. Fits truck beds between 6' and 8' in length.

Features:

  • Provides clearance required for your short-bed pickup to turn safely at slow speeds
    • Prevents trailer from hitting the cab of your pickup during sharp, slow-speed turns
  • Works with Curt Q20 5th-wheel trailer hitch rated at 20,000 lbs
  • Slides smoothly on rounded, non-binding rods
  • Designed for use on trucks with beds shorter than 8'
    • Not recommended for use on truck beds shorter than 6'
  • Mounts to industry-standard rails
  • Constructed of durable, carbide powder coated steel

Specs:

  • Gross towing weight: 20,000 lbs
  • Travel: 12" front to back
  • 10-Year warranty

Note: If using a slider, hitch will not adjust to lowest height setting.

Most often used on trucks with 6-foot and 6-1/2-foot beds, this roller helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a roller to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Non-Binding Design

The round-tube design of this slider allows for relatively uninhibited movement of your fifth-wheel hitch. Because your hitch can glide smoothly and easily along the rods, there is less chance of binding.

With straight, flat contact points, as found with square-tube sliders, tension can build between the slider and the hitch when your truck and trailer are somewhat out of line or are on uneven ground. As a result, it can be difficult to properly activate the slider when your truck and trailer are not in a straight line.

With a round-tube slider, there is more give between the contacting surfaces, allowing better mobility of the hitch system. Fewer corners means less tension buildup. Activating a round-tube slider is easier, and operation as a whole is smoother.

Video Transcript for Curt Fifth Wheel C16550 Review

Today we are going to take a look at the Curt R20 round tube slide for Curt Fifth Wheel trailer hitches. This has 12 inches of travel. Now for this video, I have installed it on the above bed base rails and the installation kit just to give you an idea what this would look like on your vehicle. Now the rails and the installation kit is sold separately. What I would recommend is go to our web site, use our fit guide, put in your year, make, and model vehicle, and it will show you what rails and installation kit you would need for your application. This is designed to work with a Curt fifth wheel trailer hitch rated at 20,000 pounds. The hitch would install right here between these uprights on the slider. Now this is a non-binding slider, provides extra 12 inches of front to back clearance which is required on a short bed pickup to turn safely at slow speeds.

The reason is it will prevent the trailer from hitting the cab of your truck during sharp, slow speed turns. It will slide smoothly on these rounded, non-binding rods that will lock the hitch into position. It is ideal for towing fifth wheel trailers. It will have a large overhang and they are rated up to 20,000 pounds. It does use the wheels. If you will notice right here, the wheels or the rollers as they call them instead of hollow rods like the competition does.

These are designed for use on trucks with beds shorter than eight feet. Now it is not recommended for use on truck beds that are shorter than six feet. This is compatible with fifth wheel above bed base rails from BMW, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley 00:01:20. This part is constructed of a durable carbide powder coated steel. It also comes with the four pins and clips that will go in here to attach your slider to the base rails. A few specs on this, the gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds.

The travel again, front to back is 12 inches total. I do want to show you how this operates. Now we don't have the hitch head in here which would give it some weight, makes it move a lot easier, but I still want to show you the slider, how it works. Basically you will just grab the handle here on the driver side, and you pull it out. Right now you are in the towing position so that means it is locked. It will be closest here, this is the cab up here, this would be closest to the cab so you are out on the highway towing. Now when you get to your campground and you need to back it into some tough angles or sharp turns, then you want to be able to gain that 12 extra inches as your slider will move the hitch head back towards the tailgate.

You just pull your handle to unlock it. Pull it out and twist it back towards the cab of the tow vehicle and that will unlock it. Then you will notice that it will slide and when it slides the full 12 inches, there is a notch that that handle will lock it automatically into place and it is locked into maneuvering position. When you are done maneuvering and you are ready to get back on the road and tow again, you want to go into towing position, the same way. You just pull it out, but this time you just turn the handle towards the fifth wheel. The same way, it unlocks it and your hitch head would slide all the way back to the towing position. You can see it locks right into place that way. That should do it for the review on the Curt R20 round tube slider for the Curt fifth wheel trailer hitches with the 12 inches of travel.

I have one complaint & it's not with ETRAILER, it's UPS, but I am sure I am not the only one. Box that roller hitch was delivered in was busted up pretty bad only has one piece that was slightly bent which was the cross brace that uses set screws to attached. Attached is picture of box with hitch. I was home & help UPS man unload, he said that's how truck was loaded when he got in truck. When installing and tightening screw it pulled brace back to being straight. Overall I am satisfied but hadn't hooked up to camper fifth wheel yet. Will hook up in next week to see how it works. I have hitch set at 19 inches above bed floor which should give 6 inches of clearance from bed rails to underneath RV . Regards Francis 522516

Completed this by myself, but probably would not recommend this to another 76 year old unless he had help. Actually it went quite well, just took me longer. 2005 Dodge 2500 478301

I wanted to convert my fixed Q20 5th wheel hitch to a slider. I called to be sure I ordered the correct part. Rebecca was knowledgeable and helpful. The slider was ordered and arrived sooner than expected. The installation was easy. My 14 year old grandson installed it for me (with close supervision) and learned how to use a torque wrench. It works great! Very easy to operate. 371924

Product showed up with box that was trashed by UPS. Parts were missing. Etrailer shipped out missing parts with no problems. Product is installed and works great. 301004

Actually I sold the Curt and bought the Andersen Fifth wheel hitch. Primarily because it only weighs 30lbs where the Curt probably weighs 130lbs

  • The Ford OEM puck system is different than the Chevrolet/GMC OEM puck system therefore, you can't use a 5th wheel hitch from one in the other. The Ford OEM system has pucks which are much closer together than on the Chevrolet/GMC OEM system.
