Video Transcript for Curt Weight Distribution 17120 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number 17120, this is the Curt Weight Distribution Shank rated at 15,000 pounds. It is designed to fit a 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. This portion here is going to be the portion that slides into your hitch. You're going to push it in until your pin holes line up with one another, and then install a hitch pin and clip or a hitch pin and lock. If you don't already have one, you can refer to our website and see some of your options. Gross towing weight is going to be 15,000 pounds, maximum towing weight is going to be 1,500 pounds. It's going to offer a maximum rise of 8 7/8 of an inch, and a maximum drop of 5 5/8 of an inch, so it can be installed and used in either the drop or rise position.

It's made from a solid steel construction with a nice black powder coated finish on it, so it is going to stand up really well against rust and corrosion. It is designed to work with Curt heavy duty front end style weight distribution system. A few measurements to go over. The overall length, measuring from end to end is going to give us a measurement of 14 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the front edge of this support bracket is going to give us a measurement of 3 1/4 of an inch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the front edge of the upright, measuring from here to this portion here, it's going to give us a measurement of 9 inches.

From the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the shank is going to measure 11 inches. If you measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the shank, that's going to give us a measurement of right at 3 inches. Again the overall length is going to be 14 inches. You're going to have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight different mount holes. The distance between those mount holes center on center is going to be an inch and a quarter. From the outermost hole to outermost hole, that's going to measure 8 3/4 of an inch.

That's going to do it for today's review of part number 17120, this is the Curt Weight Distribution Shank. .

We bought this to help level our towing set up and it works perfectly. We have a local trailer shop who transferred the WDH to this extension for free and it's awesome. The very sturdy construction and shear weight of this leaves no doubt in my mind that it is going to last us at least as long as our truck lasts. Then, if our new vehicle needs the tow ball at a different height, we've got it covered. The shipping was quick and it all worked as advertised. Thanks, etrailer! PS. Do NOT kick this with your big toe while it sits on your garage floor. It WILL hurt. 259837

I have a different manufacturer trunnion style equalizer and I was able to make this work with a few spacers because the down tube on the old hitch was 2 1/2" square, not 2". Our new Tahoe has a much higher mounted receiver than our old, and this leveled out our 30' travel trailer perfectly. Hitch was shipped and delivered promptly. 403531

Comments

One item to note is that this does extend out a little further than the average shank. Safety chains could be a tight fit if they are a little shorter. May need a chain extension.

This hitch adapted perfectly to my current Husky Center Line weight distribution hitch. Our new Suburban has a higher mounted hitch receiver compared to our old vehicle. This helped level out our 29' travel trailer perfectly after a few adjustments. Hitch was shipped and delivered earlier than expected. 520922

The Curt Weight Distribution system solved most of the trailer sway for us. Unfortunately, we needed to purchase a second shank to get the trailer level even after specking our purchase for a 3500HD Chevrolet Silverado. Seems like we should have gotten this shank with our kit. 153924

Comments

Proper shank height is determined by hitch height on the tow vehicle and coupler height on the trailer. Hitch height is not the same on every single Silverado 3500HD of a given year. The only way to know what shank will be adequate is to measure the hitch height of your specific truck on level ground. Then do the same for the trailer coupler.

This Shank worked great. It pulled our camper last summer over 5,000 miles on one trip and 250 miles on another. Have had no problems installing the equalizer hitch head from the old shank. Our new car sits high than the old one and we needed to lower the equalizer head 1.25 inches to have the camper sit level for towing. 525355

I have an old travel travel trailer and with the shank I had I could not level the trailer. As pointed out by other reviewers, the pictures don't do this shank justice. It is very well made, with good-looking welds and nicely coated. The edges and holes are nicely finished. I already mounted this Curt shank onto my Reese hitch and it fits perfectly. I rather prefer this fabricated steel shank to the Reese / Cequent cast steel units (which don't exactly exhibit as much craftsmanship, in my opinion). It seems to me that there is a lot of pride built into this Curt shank. 327787

  • Extended Length Weight Distribution Shank for Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System
  • The Curt Weight Distribution Shank, 14 Inches Long # C17122 will work well with your Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System # FA92-00-0600. This Curt weight distribution shank measures 14 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the adjustment holes, and the shank is 18 inches long overall. The spacing of the adjustment holes on this shank is 1-1/4 inches center to center, which is the same as your existing Fastway weight distribution shank. I've attached a review video...

All 2-inch replacement shanks for WD systems are linked for you. Other parts from WD systems are typically not interchangeable.

  • Choosing Between A Fastway Weight Distribution System With Round Bars Or Trunnion Bars
  • One of the major differences between a round bar system and a Trunnion bar system is if ground clearance is an issue, you may be better off choosing a Trunnion-bar system simply because these bars slide into the weight distribution head instead of inserting into it from the bottom, thus maintaining a more streamline system. The round-style spring bars slide up into the head and are held in place with clips. The round bar on # FA94-00-0600 extends about 2-1/2 inches below the weight distribution...

The shank has 3/4 inch diameter holes that are 1-1/4 inches apart on center. It has hole spacing of 1-1/4 inches, center to center. Reese shanks also have a hole spacing of 1-1/4 inches, center to center. • Drop Shank Recommendation for Weight Distribution on a Lifted Truck
  • Most likely yes, the shank that comes with the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution # RP66561 that you referenced can only do a drop of 2-1/4 inches. You are going to need a shank that can do much more drop. First you will need to determine how much drop you will need though. To do that check out the help article I attached on the subject. If you need a drop near 8-3/4 inches you would want the Curt Shank part # C17124, or for more around 5-5/8 inches part # 17120.

Therefore, if your current needs require a 5-1/4" drop in order to keep the trailer level with your tow vehicle then you will need to replace the shank with one more inline with your rise/drop needs. Having a longer ball mount like this will not reduce the capacity of your hitch at all. This will give you a length of 15-3/4 inches from the center of the ball to the hitch pin hole. For a compatible hitch ball the shank needs to be 1 inch diameter for this mount. I recommend the 2 inch ball # 40038 or 2-5/16...

  • Correct Curt Weight Distribution System for Towing a 2018 Keystone Bullet Premier Ultra Light 30RIPR
  • It looks like your current system is a Curt MV like part # C17052 which is supposed to help with the distribution of weight but doesn't include any sway control. This is why you were having issues with the wind. There are friction sway control bars like part # 17200 that you can add to your system but they are not as effective as a system that has the sway control integrated into it. The Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution (WD) # C17500 does have integrated sway control so it will help...

  • Curt Drop Weight Distribution Shank Recommendation for a Reese Strait-Line System
  • The Curt weight distribution shanks like the part # 17120 will fit the same systems that a Reese shank would, so the # 17120 would be compatible. It would provide drop of 5-5/8 inches when used with a trunnion setup like your Straitline. If that is enough drop this would work well. If you need more drop you could use the # C17123 which can do up to 8-1/4 inches.

  • Needing a Weight Distribution Hitch That Will Provide for a 3 Inches of More Drop
  • The hitch shank that you currently have, 63970, has been replaced by Reese Hitch Shank # RP54970. This hitch shank will provide 2 inches of drop using round bars and 1-/14 inch drop using trunnion bar on your weight distribution system. The Curt Hitch Shank, # 17120, will increase the drop on round bars to 5-3/4 inches, just over 3 inches. If you use the trunnion bars, then the drop will increase to 3-3/4 inches, adding 2-1/2 inches. This shank will give you almost the 3 inch additional...

  • Will a Different Shank Brand Fit an Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System
  • I actually do not recommend the use of Reese shank # RP54970 with an Equal-I-zer weight distribution system, # EQ37061ET, because the Reese design is such a departure from the Equal-I-Zer design. A shank such as Fastway # FA92-02-4213 or Curt # 17120 are better options and either would work well for you.

  • How To Select Weight Distribution Shank To Keep Trailer Level When Towing
  • The Reese Weight Distribution Shank, part # RP54970 you referenced offers a 2 inch drop to a 5-1/4 inch rise. If you are still sitting too high when you attach your hitch ball in the lowest position, you need a shank that has more of a drop. We offer several weight distribution shanks that have more drop you can choose from. One shank I recommend is the Curt Weight Distribution Shank, part # 17120. This shank has a 15,000 lb weight capacity similar to the # RP54970, but has a maximum...
