Video Transcript for Bulldog 5000lb Jack Rebulid

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the rebuild process on the Bulldog 5000-lb capacity jacks. These are typically considered to be the 170 series jack. You're going to have the square top with the metal cap. This is going to be a side-wind configuration. They've got excellent replacement part solutions available regardless of whether you've messed up your handle, the bearing or the gear set to allow you to completely rebuild this jack without having to replace it. It's a really nice, straightforward process.

The gears are going to be part #BD500106. Gives us our base gear. Gives us our handle gear. It's going to give us the pin for our handle and the pin for our base gear. That's a nice, straightforward setup. We're also going to have our bearing with thrust washer.

This is going to be part #BB500223. You'll see that's going to be a shielded bearing, so if water wants to enter the top of the jack, that shields it, takes it around it. You can see the bottom. That's designed to rotate. As we operate our jack, that's going to give us a very, very smooth, friction-free operation.

We also have a handle replacement part number. This is Part #BB500105. This is going to be a direct replacement. It's got that bell-shaped handle. It's a very comfortable handle.

It's going to give you the bushings that go in each side of the jack, and it's also going to give us the pin there. Let's get our parts set aside. Of course, we're rebuilding a brand new jack here, so we're just going to reuse the parts that we take out. We'll start by removing our cap here on top. We've got an 11mm socket. We just want to take both of these lock nuts off. You don't have to worry about holding the other side. These are carriage bolts. Once those are off, take out our two pins. Pull off our cap there. This typically doesn't get damaged, but in case it does, we also have that available on our website. The part number you'll need to replace this is BD500205. Once that is off, you'll see it's going to give us a pretty good look right into that gear set. Want to take a little bit of the grease off of it there. Then, when we put this back together, we are going to fully grease it back up. We just need an all-purpose grease. It doesn't have to be any kind of high-temp this or that. Once we've got most of that out of the way, we're going to see as we turn our gear, it's going to be like a little half-moon shaped cutout. You'll see a pin in there. It's going to go all the way through. That's the pin that we need to remove. That's what's holding our gear and our handle in place. Typically, for this, you'll use a punch. This is a 5/32nds punch. Just start tapping that through. Once we've got that pin driven through, we'll get it set aside. You can see that's going to cause our handle to move pretty freely, so we'll pull that out as we hold on to our gear there. Now, when we remove our side gear, they're both pretty much the same, the top and the bottom gear, but our pin needs to go through the pass-through area for our handle, and it needs to go through the non-pass-through area for the base gear. We'll pull that one off now. You can see that just that little pin that just floats in there. Pull that out, and that's going to match the other pin that came with our gear set. You can also see on each side here, you've got one there and on there are going to be our handle bushings. If you need to replace those, you just tap these out and put your new ones in place. Then we're going to be ready to pull the inner tube of the jack out of the outer tube. You'll see as we do, you'll see the screw start to sink down in there, just like that. We've got our washer there that we're going to hang on to. We'll reuse that. If we continue to pull and separate, there on that underside, we've got our thrust washer there and our bearing that rides on top. You'll see the design of the jack. It's pretty simple. It's just a really large machine-style screw. That's probably never going to give you failure. The typical failure either comes from our bearings, our gears or our handle. That's why they make them readily replaceable, very easy thing for you to do. Once we have that off, we would take our new thrust washer and bearing. We can drop it down on there. I think it's also a good idea to spread a little bit of grease on that screw. Certainly isn't going to hurt anything, let that work its way through. While we've got it out, we might as well just help our bearing out a little bit, throw a little bit of grease in there. Now we're ready to take our outer tube and slide it back on the inner tube. Now there's an indention on the side of the outer tube that we need to line up with the long groove on the inner tube, just like that. We'll bring that on down, see our screw right there on the top, come right through. We'll take our washer. That's going to slide on. We've got our floating pin. Slide that into place. Want to make sure that's about equal amounts hanging out on each side. We'll place that lower gear on. Again, our gears are the same, but we want to be sure we capture that pin inside that closed opening. We'll grab our handle. It's going to come back through. We'll slide our gear in place there so it goes through that. It's going to come all the way through that outside. You can see the opening in our bearing there. We just need to line that up with the hole that's in the handle. Once we've got those aligned, we'll slide our pin back in. You saw it was about flush with the outside of the gear when we took it apart. You can leave it there. I just like to knock it down in to where it's about 50/50. All right. Now we'll cap it off just by sliding our new cap down into position. Re-insert our carriage bolts there. Now, you want the head of these bolts to be on the same side as your handle. That way, you won't have anything sticking out there you might get your fingers stuck on or something like that. Now, we don't have to crush this like crazy or anything. We just want to get those down to where they're snug. That's all there is to it. That's going to complete the rebuild side of it. You'll see the hole that's been drilled all the way through the base here, or that inner tube. This is designed to accept accessories. We have two available. One would be Part #BBCP555. It's going to be the wheel. Nice, heavy-duty wheel. Just simply take that clip off, slide it on to your jack. Slide your clip back through and secure it in place. That's going to help you keep your trailer mobile. It's a nice, larger wheel, so it should roll over things. You'll see it's got good width to it. Also, we've got Part #BD018564. That's going to be a removable foot plate. It uses the same style pin. It will slide right down on there. This is just to help spread or dissipate that energy out over a greater area so we don't have to worry about our inner tube here sinking down into the sand, the mud, the gravel, even the asphalt, things like that. We hope this shows you how with just a few simple tools and a few inexpensive parts, we we're able to completely rebuild our Bulldog jack rather than purchasing a new one.

It's an exact fit for my jack. Looks to be pretty thick steel uses to form the wheel bracket. We shall see how long it holds up. 718242

A little beefier than the one we had on our Aliner trailer whose tongue weight ia approx 350 lbs. I haven't really dragged the trailer around driveway yet, but it seems to change direction easier with the little interaction I did try (one tire was bootlocked and it's a hassle to remove a Brahma lock). 574092

Comments

For a wheel that has 350 lbs of tongue weight, it works great. Now we can just hand push the trailer inout of the tight but paved space on the side of our garage instead of using the truck.

I bought this to replace the one that self-destructed on my Bulldog Jack. The wheel looks sturdy, although I haven't tried moving the trailer with it, however the diameter of the pin which locks it to the jack is larger than the original. It wook a while to ream out the hole in the jack to make it fit. 488115

This is a great addition to my new trailer. It replaces the stock flat pad and allows me to relocate the trailer while not connected. Love the latch pin that allows easy removal when towed with a lower hitch. 445179

im not fully satisfied with this product. I find the swivel needs much attention and readjusted as well as the unit often fills with water and can be rusty what I remove the wheel. It does the job but needs attention

Solid caster! Bolted it on in place of a solid foot (which I cut off, then drilled a hole for the pin). Saved $100 over replacing the whole jack. 83777

I have a RAM 2000 series trailer jack on my car carrier that I bought this caster for. The caster fit like it was made for my jack. I am very happy with how this all worked out. 145151

High quality caster wheel. Is well constructed and should last for the life of my trailer. 441518

After a year caster is still like new. My RV has over 500 lbs. of tong weight and I roll it in and out of my garage and it has held up well.

Excellent. Heavy duty and solid. I can now move by camper side to side in my driveway without kicking the wheel. Also goes easily over small cracks. I only wish there was a way to lock it to the jack to prevent theft. 228432

Comments

Still working great and still wish there was a way to lock it to prevent theft. Thinking about putting a bolt in as the retaining pin and drilling a hole at the end to fit a small padlock. Would be great if you guys made a locking retainer pin with the lock on the end like receiver hitch locking pins.

My utility trailer’s jack came with a “foot” which caused me to buy a trailer dolly to maneuver it within the tight confines of my garage. To say it was a pain is a gross understatement. I read all the positive reviews and comments regarding the Heavy Duty 6” caster and decided to give it a try. I cut the existing foot off and installed the new caster. Installation was easy and only took me about 20 minutes. What A Difference! Prior to installing the HD caster it would take me 10-15 minutes of struggling (along with a few choice words) to position the trailer. Now, even loaded with the ATV, it only takes me 2-3 minutes to accomplish the task. This is the best investment/addition I’ve made to my trailer. I highly recommend this product as it has made my life a whole lot easier. In addition, I’ve dealt with etrailer in the past and have been impressed with their quality of service and prompt delivery times. Thank you and I will continue to be a loyal customer 413378

Excellent caster. Using on my 2008 Trailmanor RV trailer. Bought this caster to replace an "under $20" caster I purchased a few months ago, which never fit the 2" jack post snugly and actually bent while trying to maneuver my trailer. I read other reviews on the Bulldog Heavy Duty caster that said it actually swiveled without having to be "kicked". The Bulldog fit perfectly, does swivel much better than the previous caster, and allowed me to position my trailer to its tight-squeeze location in my garage. Don't hesitate to pay a bit extra for this sturdy caster. I had considered buying a trailer valet ($300 plus) attachment, but no longer is necessary thanks to this caster. 223713

Caster is still holding up. Turns well and allows me to maneuver my 3000 lb trailer to its exact placement in the garage.

Well built but wheel collar is oversized and short leading to a sloppy , wobbly fit . I lengthened and resized the collar at a cost of $40 . Now the wheel works as intended 713720

I just tried it on my 6x12 enclosed trailer yesterday. The trailer was loaded with two mid-sized motorcycles. I was amazed that I could now actually steer the trailer as I pushed it across the garage floor. ( It was a constant struggle to steer the trailer with the wheel I had previously been using.) The body of this unit is constructed of much heavier steel than the one it replaced. The wheel material is nice and dense and rolls easily. I was a bit surprised that the swiveling part of the caster does not use ball bearings. Instead it rides on a plastic disc. It is yet to be determined how long this setup lasts. 708431

I don't write many reviews but I will share this information. I received a quality wheel and got my moneys worth. I put this wheel on my 6x12 enclosed trailer over a year ago. It works well. An inexpensive lower quality wheel I had on the trailer was not be able to manage rolling turning and pivoting and when needed most, and would frustrate me to no end. This wheel - no issues. I have to take it off when I move the trailer and put it back on when I get to my destination. Not a problem as it is a quick release pin and easy to attach and reattach. WELL WORTH SPENDING THE SMALL BIT OF MONEY TO UPGRADE AND GET THE QUALITY HEAVY DUTY WHEEL FOR THE TRAILER- 639507

Very strong and worth the extra money. The wheel material rolls so much better on concrete than the cheap plastic ones. The frame is also sturdy. Can roll my car hauler around with ease. Shipped way faster than predicted date. Great service! 580945

Exactly what I needed 578402

- BDCP555
by:

Definitely a step up from the standard wheel I am replacing, and the ordering was painless too. There is a neoprene -like washer that helps for a smooth swivel...its pretty thin, so I wonder how long it will survive. I also sprayed some Teflon lubricant into that joint to augment the swivel action. Maybe just the stage in my life, but I'm excited and can't wait to try out the swivel action caster on my Coleman E3!! 566827

This jack wheel is a nice solid piece. It should last for a good long time, as long as I don't drag it too much going through driveways... (my jack doesn't swing up since it is a heavy duty electric model). 387804

  • Trailer Jack Recommendation for Kendon Motorcycle Trailer with Round Tongue
  • There is no bolt-on jack made for a round tube trailer frame since this would make securing the jack rather difficult; it would want to rotate around the frame tube whenever it was under load. You will need to have some steel material welded to your frame to allow jack installation. You can use a pipe-mount type like Pro Series # PS1401060303 which includes the weld-on pipe section.

This has a 1,500 pound weight capacity so it will still reduce the 2,000 pound rating on the Bulldog Jack to this lower number when used. As long as you remain under this reduced limit the wheel will work well. The only 7 inch caster we have available is the Fulton Twin-Track Assembly # F500265 that you referenced...

  • Replacement Sidewind Jack for 23 Foot Boat Trailer with Shelby A-Frame Jack
  • Trailer jacks only have to lift the tongue weight of a trailer. So your trailer weighing about 4,000 lbs would only have about 400 lbs of tongue weight which the Bulldog jack part # BD1550100317 that you referenced would easily take care of. This matches the style of jack you need and fits the standard a-frame bracket your trailer has so it will fit and work really well. To add a wheel to this jack like what you have now you'll just need the part # BDCP555.

  • Recommendation for Replacement Jack Foot for a 5,000 Pound A-Frame Trailer Jack
  • Sounds like your trailer's weight is too heavy to support the use of a jack caster wheel. I would instead recommend the Pro Series Footplate # PS1400700340. This has a capacity of 5,000lbs and will fit the 2 inch jack tube diameter. The Wide-Track Wheel Assembly for Fulton F2 # F500266 that you referenced would be a good choice if the jack you had a Fulton F2 A-frame jack # F1413250334. Since you do not have an A-frame F2 jack I would not recommend it for you, because it is specially...

  • Does Trailer Jack Caster BDCP555 Have a Ball Bearing Swivel
  • Jack caster # BDCP555 does not feature a ball bearing swivel. Instead, it uses a combination of a thrust washer and a flat washer for the swivel feature.

  • Caster Wheel For 5,000 lb Capacity Trailer Jack
  • There are not any caster wheels that we carry that are rated for that 5,000 lb capacity. My recommendation for a durable wheel is the Replacement Heavy-Duty # BDCP555. This is rated for 1,500 lbs and is the strongest caster we carry that isn't for a specific model of jack. People use these caster wheels on higher rated jacks like you mentioned and it will fit, but they are only rated for that smaller capacity.

  • Will the Bulldog Replacement Wheel Caster Assembly # BDCP555 Fit on a Bulldog 150 Trailer Jack
  • Yes, as long as your Bulldog 150 jack has a 2 inch outer diameter lift tube and the flat foot that is attached to the lift tube is secured with a snapper pin, the Replacement Heavy-Duty, 6 inch Caster for 2 inch Diameter Bulldog Jacks - 1,500 lbs, item # BDCP555, will work on your jack. Similar jacks that we carry, that use this caster are the Bulldog Trailer Jack, item # BD150152 and the Bulldog Trailer Jack, item # BD150000. You must keep in mind that the Replacement Heavy-Duty, 6...

  • Replacement 2,000 Pound Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Jack
  • Bulldog jack # BD155033 would be a comparable replacement for the jack you have on your trailer. I believe the jack you have is one that they only sold to trailer manufacturers. The outer diameter of jack # BD155028 is 2-1/4 inches. Measure the outer diameter of the outer tube of your jack to confirm it is also 2-1/4 inches. If you need to add a when you can use # BDCP555. But the wheel is only rated up to 1,500 pounds so you would have to stay under that 1,500 pounds.

  • A-Frame Trailer Jack Options with a Lift Capacity of 5,000 lbs
  • The Bulldog Square A-Frame Trailer Jack, # BD195318, has a lift capacity of 3,000 lbs and a static weight capacity of 5,000 lbs. If you want a jack with a 5,000 lb lift capacity, I recommend looking at the Bulldog Round A-Frame Trailer Jack, # BD1750290301. This jack has a lift capacity of 5,000 lbs, a top wind crank and a 15 inch lift like the square jack you referenced. At this time we do not have any square tube or drop leg jacks with a 5,000 lb lift capacity. This jack can be...

  • Replacement Trailer Jack Wheel for a RAM 2000 lb Jack
  • I may have an option that will work for you, however, the casters that we carry were designed as replacement casters for certain manufacturers. To determine if the Bulldog Replacement Heavy-Duty 6 Inch Caster, # BDCP555, will fit on your RAM 2,000 lb jack, you will want to take a few measurements on your jack. This caster was designed to fit 2 inch outer diameter jack tubes. Based on my research of your jack, you should have an inner tube with a 2 inch outer diameter. The next dimension...

  • Replacement Jack Recommendation for an AL-KO 1222434
  • I looked up the AL-KO 1222434 jack online and was able to determine that it is a top wind jack without mounting hardware like the # BD1701480317. For a wheel for this jack you would use the # BDCP555.

  • Replacement Foot Plate for Bulldog 5,000 Pound Round A-Frame Trailer Jack
  • It sounds like you are looking for the footplate for your Bulldog Round A-Frame Jack # BD155032. For this you will use the Bulldog Detachable Footplate # BD018564, which will fit the 2 inch diameter tubing on your jack and includes the pin needed for easy detachment and installation. If you are interested in a caster wheel we have the part # BDCP555 which is compatible with your jack as well. Just note that the caster does have a 1,500 pound capacity so this would reduce the capacity of...

  • A-Frame Trailer Jack Recommendation for a 10,000 lb Trailer
  • A trailer that weighs 10,000 lbs would have a tongue weight of anywhere from 1,000 lbs to 1,500 lbs. The Bulldog Jack part # BD1750290301 that you referenced has a 5k capacity and would be more than enough. For a footplate to go with this jack you would want part # BD018564 or for a wheel caster part # BDCP555.

  • Replacement A-Frame Caster Wheel Jack for 1969 Aristocrat Lo Liner
  • Based on my research your 1969 Aristocrat Lo-Liner has standard a-frame construction so you can use one of the top wind jacks shown on the linked page. I suggest the Bulldog 2K-rated jack # BD155033 along with either the caster wheel # BDCP555 or the footplate # BD018564.

  • Recommended Replacement Trailer Jack Caster Wheel for Aliner Camper
  • We do offer replacement trailer jack caster wheel assemblies for three diameters of jack tube, 1-3/4-inch, 2-inch and 2-1/4-inch. I linked a page that will show you all such items from Pro Series, Shelby and others. I checked the camper parts catalog on the Aliner website but they do not specify any details about the brand, model, capacity or tube diameter of their OEM jacks. The Fulton Twin-Track Wheel Assembly for Fulton F2 Adjustable A-Frame Jacks # F500265 that you referenced fits...

  • Low Clearance A-Frame Trailer Jack that Can be Fitted with a Wheel or Footplate
  • The footplate for Bulldog rack and gear jack # BD165111 is welded to the foot and cannot be removed but I do have some recommendations for you. First, take a look at Pro Series jack # PS1401000303. The mounting bracket is very low relative to the bottom of the jack tubes, 5-1/2 inches. You can use footplate, # PS1400700340 and wheel # PS1400750340. The wheel is rated for 1,200 pounds so it would limit the jack capacity to 1,200 pounds also. And we also have Bulldog jack # BD155033...

  • Bolt-On Swivel Trailer Jack for Side-Mounting on Trailer Frame
  • If tailgate clearance at your trailer's a-frame tongue jack is a concern you might want to switch to the Bulldog Topwind A-Frame Jack # BD155032. This 5K jack requires only 10-3/16-inches of clearance above the mounting bracket (not including the handle) so it should fit at your tailgate. Bulldog is part of Cequent Performance Products, parent company of brands like Reese, Tekonsha, Draw-Tite, Fulton and others. This is a high-quality jack that will have replacement parts available into...

  • Availability of a Pipe Mounted Trailer Jack with a Wheel Caster or Foot Plate Option
  • The Bulldog Pipe Mount Jack part # BD1541150301 would work well for you. This jack is a pipe mount like you would need and has the ability to install a wheel like part # BDCP555 or a foot plate like part # BD018564. You should note that with the wheel the jack would be limited to 1,500 lbs of capacity even though the jack is rated for 2,000 lbs.

  • Recommended Swivel Jack for Round Tube Trailer Tongue
  • There is no bolt-on style jack made for a round tube trailer frame since this would make securing the jack rather difficult. The jack would want to rotate around the frame tube whenever it was under load. Your only option is to weld a jack mount onto your round tongue. You can use a pipe-mount type like the Bulldog Round, Pipe-Mount Swivel Jack - Sidewind - 10" Lift - 2,000 lbs # BD1541150301. This will require the mount # BD015279 and caster wheel # BDCP555
