Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Bulldog High-Profile Latch Repair Kit

Hey everyone, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be showing you how to install the Bulldog high profile latch repair kit for Bulldog Collar-Lok style couplers. So today we have a really good example on where a repair kit like this would come into play, right It's super common for these style of latches to end up breaking over time, you know, so if your coupler is in otherwise good shape like ours is, you know, it's got a little wear and stuff, but it's not damaged, still works, but the latch mechanism, without it, you're trying to do it by hand and it's just kind of a huge pain. And so our neighbor here today is at the point where they're just kind of going through their trailer doing the little ins and outs like this just to make it right. And so what this repair kit is gonna come with, you'll get a new handle of course. They're not painted or anything right out of the box, so that's why you see a little bit of surface rust.

So I would definitely advise painting it once you have it installed and everything, which I plan to do in a moment. But you're also gonna get the other little parts too that commonly go bad. Especially this one, it seems like a lot of people have issues losing this. You'll get a new pin and little retainers to lock it down. You'll get a new spring that actually gives the, you know, that coupler tension as well as a cotter pin to lock your handle down once you're hooked up to your truck.

This repair kit is going to work with all the Bulldog Collar style couplers with the high profile latch. If you have something different, we carry a lot of different little ins and outs like this that, you know, give you solutions to the problem you might be having. So if it turns out this isn't what you're looking for, chances are pretty good we have what you are needing. But other than that, it's really about it, you know, nothing really to it. So with that said, why don't we go ahead, we'll start to get this replaced together and hopefully it'll work like the day it was new.

We'll get all these old parts off first, kind of see what we have to work with. And you know, there's not really a right or wrong way to do this per se here. I'm just gonna try to grab a pair of pliers. Work this off. It's super old and rusty, take your time, be careful.

We'll pop that off and get this piece off. And then if we slide the collar back, the spring is actually located right up underneath there, so we should be able to reach up and just kind of pry that out. There's that spring there and I think you take a little screwdriver or something. We should be able to get that popped down there. While we're down here, we'll grab our new spring and just pop that into position. That'd be a great time too, since our latch mechanism is gonna go over this part and you know, kind of rest on it. If yours is in rough shape, it needs cleaned up, the ideal time to do that. So that's exactly what I'm gonna do. I'm just gonna sand this down, clean it up, maybe shooting a coat of paint on it and go from there. So I shot some paint on here and on the bottom side of our latch too, and it's almost completely dry, dry enough to work with. So we'll start by putting this piece on here. Like that. And then the ends are just gonna clamp around small holes. So eventually this will kind of sit on here, something like that. So what we can do now, this hole here in the latch is gonna line up with that hole there and it'll definitely be tight, just kind of trying to find that sweet spot to get everything lined up. And take our pin, push that through. You take one of the retainers and these are just gonna get pushed into place on that pin. They're definitely tight, so be careful when you're doing this. I might even try to do, just find a socket or something that's about the same size, tap it on, or let me grab a pair of pliers here. Maybe this might work a little bit better. So it's all together now. I did on our trailer, we have a little tether here that I put the pin on for the, you know, lock when this is down and we'll test this out now. So we should be able to pull it up like that. That unlocks everything and gonna lock this down, closes. And that's where, that's when you would put this, this guy in here, which I'm not super crazy about these styles here, but you know, they do work, you can always replace this with a lock or another type of mechanism if you want to. And there you go. Now you're completely secure on your ball mount, the handle's locked down and you're not gonna have to worry about coupling issues there. So, you know, it definitely did the job and what it was supposed to do. It still is a little rough, you know, but I think that's just our trailer, pretty rusty. I might come back to maybe spray a little lubricant in here just to kind of kind of get things going. And even with the fresh coat of paint, you know, you might wear a little bit of it off. So, but overall, it's working. It's complete assembly again. And with all this done, if you want, you can come back and spray the handle with a coat of paint too. And with all that done, that'll finish up our look at and our installation of the Bulldog high profile latch repair kit for Bulldog Collar style couplers.

The hitch we bought fit with no adjustments . I had my 30 year old son put it together and he said he could not have had an easier time putting it together. He was very impressed. Thanks for a well made product and for having very helpful staff. Ana M. was very helpful and very friend to a not so computer savy person.

After searching several internet sites looking for a Bulldog High-Profile Latch Repair Kit for the Heavy-Duty Collar-Lok Coupler on our trailer with no apparent luck, we came to etrailer.com and with little or no effort, we found the part we were looking for. The site was extremely easy to navigate and the ordering process was quick and easy as well. I can't say enough about this site and if anyone is looking for trailer accessories, etc. I highly recommend this site to you for your needs. In addition, the representatives of etrailer.com communicated to us by email to ensure that we were totally satisfied with our product and left several different email addresses and telephone numbers for us to us in the event that we needed to get in touch with them personally. I've always been an advocate of service after the sale and I got 110% in this instant.

trailer hitch was very easy to install only had to drop the right side exhaust hanger to install hitch. only plan on using hitch for bike rack maybe a small utility trailer.

by:

I’m extremely pleased with Collar-Loc repair kit I purchased. My livestock trailer (1985 Hale) I recently purchased has a Bull Dog coupler with collar but had no latch mechanism or mount for one. After watching your installation video I fabricated a mounting piece, drilled two 1/4” holes using the latch as a pattern then tack welded the mounting piece on the trailer tongue. The latch repair kit assembly fit onto the mounting piece but I needed to move and reweld the fabricated mount back about 3/16” in order for the latch kit to pull the Bull Dog collar back enough to allow the hitch to open. Now the trailer hitch opens and closes perfectly.

Perfect! Easy to install and and well built. Very dependable.

by:

The product came on time but I was disappointed that it was rusty bare metal, not even primer on it. I had to spend time cleaning it with a wire wheel before I could paint it. I would say that overall it is a quality product. Made in the USA

by:

Exactly what I needed to fix my trailer after someone backed into my hitch. The shipping took a couple weeks longer than expected.

by:

Bought a trailer that had this handle broken. Immediately went to etrailer to see if they had it. It was a perfect match. Bought on a Sunday, received it on a Thursday. Install only took a minute literally. Only time will tell about quality but that will be in my follow up. Once again etrailer with top notch customer service. Thank you.

Just what I needed to repair my Bulldog hitch. Good quality parts and easy installation.

by:

Easy to install, solid, has rusted a bit. Only place I could get the part from- other places wanted to remove the front of the trailer and weld on a new front end!

by:

About a three minute fix. Parts were perfect and assembled effortlessly!

Working very well! Thanks for the follow up!

Lost the strong wire connector between the operating lever and collar on my Bulldog hitch. Spent many years pulling the collar back by hand. Through Bulldog, found E-trailer. Their folks helped me find the exact 'hi-profile' part that I needed even though the trailer just celebrated its 40th birthday. Ordered the item and it was shipped within a few hours. Then USPS had it for just short of a week getting it from Missouri to Austin. Will have the new item installed today and back to being a happy trailer tower. Thanks etrailer. Very good job and I will be back.

I ordered the Bulldog coupler repair kit but really just needed the sliding retainer wire actuator.
Also my hitch is the heavy duty coupler but still uses the same repair kit.

Easy install and operates normally

@Carlos The latch has no finish on it, so to avoid rust you'd want to paint it. We're glad it's working well for you!

Lever was rusty

Have had the trailer with a 2 5/16 ball bulldog hitch for 40 years. The unit that locks the collar into place became a bit bent and the wire piece distorted making an unsafe condition, which I found out when my hitch did not lock properly. The trailer came off the ball and the yelling and screaming began. Etrailer had the parts for this old hitch which they still make today. Bulldog, a great choice and etrailer a great spot to buy from. Great buying experience.
