Ellen: Hey everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com, and today we're taking a quick look at the Bulldog Winch off-road winch mounting plate. This is going to be a specific fit for your vehicle. In this case, it fits the Toyota Tacoma, so it's going to work for that generation three 2016 to 2019 Toyota Tacoma. It fits in with your factory mounting points, so whenever you take off the front fascia and the grill, there's going to be a couple of studs that this is going to fit over and you'll reuse the hardware from your Toyota to mount this in place. It does come with instructions that do a pretty good job of lining out all the connections and all the fasteners that you've got to take off in between.
It has pictures, too, which always helps. That's something that I like to see in the instructions to make it a little easier to do.The nice thing about this is that once you have it in place, all of this bracketry is going to be hidden away. The only thing that you'll see is the fairing lead coming off the front. You might see just a little bit of this bracket. But you can really make it as innocuous as you want.
It also comes with a drilling template for your front bumper, so you can mount that up and have it lined up so you can cut out a hole to allow that fairing lead to come through. You can either cut it out so that the whole fairing lead is visible or just the opening, so it's an even more discreet. Also, another little thing that they did with this template is that it's a sticker. It's not just a piece of paper that you have to try to tape up or anything like that. You can peel out the backing, stick it to your bumper, drill everything out that you need to, and then peel it off. That's a really smart little thing that Bulldog Winch included with that, which is just something a little bit different than some other things that I've seen out there, so I just wanted to point that out that it does come with that. All in all, this is going to be really sturdy mount for your winch.
It gives you a nice sleek look. It makes it look pretty much factory from Toyota. It has a standard mounting pattern for our winch to go onto, so it's going to be your 10 by four and a half bolt pattern. There is a little bit of wiggle room front to back for that so you can adjust your winch mounting. Then this front plate that the fairing lead goes onto is also adjustable, so you can get that dialed into how far out you want that fairing lead to come.
It does not come with the winch, but we do have a lot of options for those here etrailer.com, so if you need to pick one up, you can find one that's going to meet your needs. Of course, it's always better to go with something that's going to be plenty powerful to winch your Toyota out of any kind of tricky situation.Again, as far as mounting this up, it's going to be pretty simple, just mounts with those factory bolts on your Toyota. You do have to take off the fascia, as I mentioned, and it will replace the aluminum bumper. There's like a crush bumper on the inside of the fascia, so this is going to kind of take the place of that, but you'll be able to reuse the hardware to get that in place. I think this is a pretty nice mount. It should look really good on your truck and should make it a little easier to get out of those tricky situations. But that's pretty much going to do it for our look at the Bulldog Winch off-road mounting winch plate. I hope this video has been helpful in deciding that this is going to be the right one for you. If not, we do have other options available here etrailer.com, as well as winches to fit with this plate. Thanks for watching.

The Bulldog Winch Mounting plate was delivered on time but the box was torn open. All the hardware was still in the box.
It’s very well built and fits perfectly. My 17 year old and 14 year old grandson’s dismantled the Tacoma and installed it. I just sat there and supervised.
I’m very pleased with the product.
I will say I went with a Smittybuilt gen 2 winch because I thought the gen 3 would be to big. I was right. You are limited on room.
Mount fit perfectly in my '20 Tacoma, instructions were clear. Keeps clean looks of truck. Lighter and cheaper than other options.

Im still satisfied with the winch mount, have a Superwinch TS 9500 RS with synthetic rope mounted on it
Great quality winch plate. Installed it on my 3rd Gen Toyota Tacoma.
The winch mount was perfect, fit the Superwinch SX10K just right. Also, I know this is advertised as fitting the 2016+ 3rd Gen but wanted to point out that I fitted this to my 2007, the frame is identical, so it will work.
Looks and works awesome, there is 4 lower brackets to hold the bumper with 4 screws that you will loose but bumper seems steady
I’m taking the truck off road this weekend let’s see how it holds.
For the price, this winch mount cannot be beat. There is nothing else on the market that is this affordable and for those of us who want to keep our vehicle looking stock, this offers such a good solution. I've used my winch that is mounted to this plate 5 or 6 times to move fallen trees and to pull people out of ditches and it's holding up really well for a year in Montana now.
Pros: Very heavy duty well made and strong looking. Once I had the grill and the bumper off it went on very easy and seems very sturdy.
Cons: The winch mounting plate came with 6 spacers. No where in the instructions does it tell you where to use these spacers. I called Bulldog to ask them. They go kind of under the truck, but on only some builds not all builds. Mine needed them. But all Tacoma builds require you to take out two bolts under the vehicle and use them to re-insert the mount to the truck. This detail is completely left out of the instruction. Since I needed to use the spacers I had to go to Lowes and buy new bolts that were longer to secure the mount. I assume there is a large portion of people who missed this step completely. The instructions say to use the 6 studs to mount the mounting plate, but say nothing about the two heavy duty bolts underneath. My other complaint is that there is no Youtube video on this mounting plate, which is odd. Also there are vertical wings near the holes where the fairlead mount bolts into the winch mount, which limits how close the winch can be pushed to the fairlead. This would give more space to stay away from the power steering cooler. I used a Badlands Apex 12,000 winch. There was not a lot of room to make this install
There's only one problem with this product: Because of the design, which wraps underneath the frame for strength (big plus), you cannot re-install the factory recovery point (the hook). The plate is too wide, and covers up one of the mounting holes. The quality is excellent, and the weight savings (if that's important) are substantial, as this is one of the lightest mounting plates out there. Everything lined up perfectly, and the build quality is obvious when you look at the welds, seams, fit & finish. Just that one flaw, which for some - is pretty big.
It looks good! Can’t wait to test it out! Some minor cutting on the mount was needed.
I bought this as a starting point, so for that, not too bad. Happy to see it's of a heavier material than I expected for the price. Holes do not match up on one side and on the bottom. I am needing to do a bit more cutting and re-welding than I hoped for. The fairlead bracket is held on by one bolt on either side, I do not trust this to hold under load, so will be welding in some gussets.
Not bad for the price, but prepare for some possible reworking.
I have a 2013 Tacoma and went ahead and bought the one for a 2016 to 2020 because nobody had one for that year. Bolted right up to the frame but had to do some minor fab work. Very very happy with how it turned out. Thank you etrailer.
Quick delivery and great product. My truck looks stock. I bought a license plate hinge from amazon and you simply lift the license plate when you need to use the winch.
Pro: Quick Shipping, Great Communication, Already Coated
Fair Warning: Will have to move the Power Steering cooler line back, but SUPER EASY.
very easy install, product fitment was excellent. installation took approx. 3 hours with basic hand tools in my home garage.
About a 5 hour driveway install for mount plate and winch on Tacoma. Get plenty of compliments on the looks and it is very functional.
Box did show up open, all parts there though. Think a similar customer experienced this as well. Did this with a Smittybilt XRC 9500 winch and fits/looks awesome…
Very good service and fast shipping
