Video Transcript for Review of Brake Buddy Tow Bar Braking Systems - Replacement Breakaway Kit - HM39327

Ellen: Hey everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com Today we're taking a look at the replacement Brake Buddy Vantage Select Break-Away System. So this is going to be the brakes away switch that you'll need to bring your vehicle to a safe stop in the event of any kind of accidental disconnect. So it's really just there as a fail safe. If something happens to occur where your towed vehicle comes disconnected from your RV, this is going to be there as a safety feature. It'll pull that pin and apply the brakes in your towed and then bring your vehicle to a stop.

This is also required by law in a lot of states and almost everywhere really requires this now, so it's good idea to have it to be within compliance. It comes with the bungee cord or the coiled cable to go between the switch itself and our RV. You just want that bigger clip to be on the RV side since that'll attach to your safety chain loop. You want to make sure that whenever you're putting this in place that you don't wrap it around your tow bar. You want this to just be on its own. That's why it has that coil design so any slack that there might be will be taken up by that coil.

So you definitely don't want to wrap it around anything because then that'll kind of defeat the purpose of it getting pulled whenever you happen to have an accidental disconnect and you also don't want it to accidentally get deployed if you're just making a wide turn or something and then it happens to pull on that cable because you don't want your brakes to suddenly get applied when they don't need to be in your towed vehicle. So it can definitely cause some damage to your towed vehicle. But anyway, those are just things to keep in mind. As long as this is just hanging out connected to that front hook, connect the other side to your safety chain loops, it's there is that fail safe device. Now to get this installed, you will need to attach this to a secure mounting position on the front of your towed vehicle. Typically it's going to be somewhere underneath your grill or on the front facia of your vehicle.

Some spot that's going to be out of the way and not too noticeable, but still a nice secure location. If it's going to be a thicker material, you'll want to tap that out or drill out a hole and then tap it with a 1024 tap to make some threads for these little machine screws to go into. That'll work out well for those thicker materials like steel or heavier plastic. If you don't have a thicker material to go into, you can just use the machine screws to just go straight into whatever that material is.It's also going to come with a little bracket that's go around the box and that's where you're going to attach your screws in, so that's what's going to hold it in place. The wiring, it's pretty much already pre-wired, so you just have to run it from the front of your vehicle through the firewall into the cab of your vehicle.

It also comes with a small grommet that's already split, so that'll go over the wire and provide some protection against any fumes and water from coming into the cab of your vehicle. The instructions have a pretty good layout of everything that you need to know to get this installed, including the size drill bit that that's going to require to get in place. We give a few very small zip ties to secure our wire as it's going through our vehicle. You want to make sure that whenever you're running this cable that you stay away from anything hot or moving like your engine or your exhaust and also staying away from anything that's going to be too sharp. You don't want to drag anything across any sharp edges and nick that wire. Having some zip ties is all going to also going to help to keep the slack from moving down and getting tangled up anywhere along the way. So you always want to make sure that you have everything nice and tidy it up inside your engine bay. That's pretty much all there is to it for our Replacement Brake Buddy Vantage Select Break-Away System. This is typically going to be used as a second vehicle kit, so if you happen to get that brake buddy maybe second hand or you're just adding another vehicle to your Armada that's going to be hauled behind your RV, this is going to be a great kit for you to have to get that all working properly. If you need any other components for your flat tow system, we have a lot of options available here at etrailer.com including those tow bars, base plates, wiring sockets, all that good stuff. Definitely check it out if you're interested. Thanks for watching. See you next time.
