Video Transcript for FAQ How To Use Hot Water Heaters

Hey guys, this is Jake here with etrailer. I know how important hot water is to me when I go camping, so I want you to be confident after watching this video, to be able to use your hot water heater when you go camping. First step into getting your hot water heater running, is you're going to either need to fill your fresh water tank or have your fresh water tank filled or connect to a city water connection. We're going to be connecting to a city water connection, since we're at a campsite. You just thread that on. Make sure you get it good and tight, so it's not leaking.

And then we either need to turn our city water on or turn water pump on. So, we'll turn our water on. And then we come over to our water heater and the pressure release valve, which is right here, will be on your water heater side, we need to pull it. Now, ours is already full, but you would need to normally pull this until you let all the air out and then water starts coming out of this spigot. You see, we just have water coming out, that means there's no more air in our hot water heater tank.

The next step in the process, is going to be to turn your propane on. Now, whether your propane is under a cover like this which is usually gonna be the case with travel trailers or it's going to be in a compartment on the side if you have a fifth wheel. Regardless, pull the cover off or open up your compartments and turn whichever bottles you actually have connected. Ours are connected in line, so we turn them both on so then our gas last twice as long and we don't have to check it in the middle of our trip. The third thing we need to do, is we need to turn the switch on our hot water heater, we need to turn it on.

Sometimes it could be hard to find like ours on this hot water heater, it's in and behind this loop. So, you just take the switch and turn it on. Now, inside your camper, you'll find a control panel that will have a water heater switch for it. Now this, before you do this step this is gonna be your last step to turning on your water heater and getting the water heated up. You wanna make sure that you've done all the preview steps before you do this, especially making sure that your hot water heater is full because you definitely do not wanna run this with your water heater dry.

It will do damage to your water heater. So, we'll turn it on. Usually you'll have a red indicator light here. You can listen for the hot water heater or have somebody outside. Wait a few seconds. So as soon as this red light went off, we heard our hot water heater kick on. The time that it takes to heat up your water, is going to depend on a couple different factors. Your type of your water heater is going be the first factor. If you have a hybrid model, which is going to be gas and electric, those are gonna be the fastest to heat up the water. The second fastest will be propane and the third fastest will be electric alone. The other factors that are going to play into it, is the temperature of the water coming from the well or your tank going into the hot water heater and the ambient temperature outside. So for example, the water coming out of the ground is about 60 degrees, and the ambient temperature is about 76 degrees. And took us 11 minutes and 40 seconds to be able to heat up this standard hot water heater. So, we've had some people ask, can you leave your hot water heater on while you're camping The answer is, absolutely. That's what it's intended for. It's intended to keep the water at a temperature that's hot so that you can use it for dishes or taking a shower or whatever you might need. It's definitely designed to be left on. So with that, you might be wondering how much propane are you gonna use while you have your hot water heater on Well, that's gonna depend. It's gonna depend on the age of your hot water heater, the ambient temperature outside, again, how many times throughout the day it's turning on. So, if you're camping in the wintertime, it's probably gonna turn on twice as much as it will in the summertime. Because again, the ambient temperature is a lot colder, so it's cooling off your hot water heater tank a lot faster. After you have been camping a few times maybe pick up a few propane gauges and put them on your tanks and just keep an eye on them and you'll be able to tell exactly how much your hot water heater will use over the course of one weekend. Now, having talked about the tank hot water heaters which are your traditional hot water heaters, tankless hot water heaters are going to use a lot less propane because they're only going to run when you're using water. Because it's not keeping a six or 10 gallon reservoir to your desired temperature all day long. Well, guys hopefully, this video was able to help you out with some of the questions that you might have had. If you have any questions or in addition, please leave them in the comments below and we'll see you next time..

Exactly what I needed!!

Great service, and follow up. Very helpful staff, I don't run into often. These folks really care.
As far as the switch is concerned it is just like the one installed years back. Still didn't work which tells me it's something else, but we all expect challenges.

This is an exact replacement for the old switch. It was received on time.

Unfortunately the switch did not come with any instruction sheet. Also I was not aware the lamp was 12 volt, yes, stamped on the side but too small for me to read easily. I wired it 110 Volt, you know what happened popped the lamp. My assumption was wrong thinking voltage, lesson learned!

Easy to install , works every time, I just hit the awitch anf the water fires right up

It worked just perfect and it went a motor home. The other switch was not keeping the heater going.

The switch arrived on time and was easy to install.
