Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector in your vehicle's junction box. The box is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, just above the carpeting.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Today on our 2017 Chevy Silverado, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite I-Command Proportional Trailer Brake Controller, part number 5535. To help us with that installation, we're also going to be using the Tekonsha adapter, part number 3016. This is what our Draw-Tite I-Command Brake Controller looks like when it's installed. This is going to apply brakes to your trailer. It's also going to relieve the stress on your vehicle's brakes when you are pulling a trailer. This is going to be a proportional braking system, which means it's going to match the amount of pressure you're putting on your vehicle brakes.

It's going to match that to the trailer brakes. Now that we've hooked up our trailer, you can see on the screen here it has a C. That's showing that the trailer is connected. Over here on the left side of the screen, you're going to see gain. You're going to have a plus or minus button. What this is going to do is it's going to put ...

This is going to adjust the amount of force that is applied to your trailer brakes. Over here on the right side is your boost. It's going to have a blue plus and a blue minus button. What the boost is going to do, it's going to adjust how quickly the amount of braking is applied to the trailer brakes. What this button here is going to be, it's going to be a manual override.

What that's going to be for is if you have a sway in your trailer or any movement that you need to stop right away. You can apply this and it will apply the brakes to your trailer without applying the brakes to your vehicle. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin the installation we're going to start with our adapter. Under the dash we're going to locate this black box here. It's going to be behind the emergency brake pedal.

Now, there's two lock clips on it, and you just take a screwdriver and pop it off like that, and we're looking for that spot right there. We're going to place that inside. Next what we want to do, you're going to make sure your wire runs out the top of the box, and then go ahead and put your cover back on. We're going to find a spot on the dash panel underneath here that doesn't have anything behind it, and you want to make sure that you're level from side to side. Next we're going to take our eighth-inch drill bit and we're going to drill us a inaudible 00:02:23. Once we have the controller mounted on our dash, we'll go ahead and plug it in, and then we'll take all of our extra wiring and we're going to find a place and we'll zip-tie it up back behind the dash. Now that we have our brake controller installed, you can see it says NC on the screen. That means you have no trailer connected to the back of your vehicle. However, it is telling you that you have it hooked up correctly. That'll do it for the Draw-Tite I-Command Proportional Trailer Brake Controller, part number 5535 on our 2017 Chevy Silverado.

The Tekonsha (item 3016) wiring harness allowed me to move my Tekonsha brake box controller from a Honda to a GM product with effortless ease. Instructions of where the harness connection was located in the new location (exact fit). The ability to have no splicing of wires and a clean, factory style, connection for a low price with a trusted manufacturer was a must. Always happy with Tekonsha products and ETrailer service. 513732

2015 GMC Sierra 1500

As expected, service and pricing from etrailer was exceptional. 8th order in the past year and always satisfied with the customer service side of a transaction. The cable was "factory" from Tekonsha and was of very good quality, but it was about 8" too short for me to mount the brake controller on the right side of the steering column away from the door. I had an old wiring adapter from my previous truck and cut and spliced in a 12" section so that I could mount the controller where it was least in the way and easily accessible to me, the driver. And, if I need to move the controller in the future I now have plenty of slack. One more step, but not a big deal. All is good! 559160

2000 Chevrolet Silverado

I had purchased and used the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller on my 2000 Silverado with good results. When I got a new-to-me 2104 Silverado, I thought I could just buy a new cable and I was correct. It was delivered quickly and plugged in with no issues. The new truck's lower dash panel is more vertical than the older truck and I didn't want to drill holes in it for the mount, so I purchased heavy duty Velcro tape and cut it to fit. It has worked without issues. 446054

This Plug-In adapter made installing the brake controller so easy. Hooked up within 5 minutes and ready to go. So much easier than hard wiring it. And if I want to use the brake controller in another vehicle I can just unplug it. I only wish the wiring harness was a little longer. The only place to put my controller where I could see it was on my right side and I barely was able to mount it there. 571109

The brake controller I purchased is still on my 2014 GMC and I have had absolutely no problems or issues with it. As I stated previously, I was quite impressed with its ease of installation. I have recommended your company to others and I will purchase again when I trade trucks.

I purchased this for my 2014 Chevy Silverado long bed regular cab 4x4 work truck. It plugged in and worked fine and is great quality. The only disappointment was that it is too short in length. I would have liked to mount the controller right of the steering wheel, but it does not reach. It is only long enough to reach left of steering wheel. Not the end of the world. It works great. 121121

2017 Chevrolet Silverado

I just purchased a new 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.3 L V6, 8ft bed, base model truck, with no options. The truck is rated to tow a 5900 lbs trailer with a CGVW limit of 11000 lbs. I will be towing a Lance 1985 travel trailer, that weighs in around 4500 lbs wet. With excellent reviews and outstanding installation videos from etrailer.com, I ordered the Curt C14006 class IV hitch; the Tekonsha proportional Prodigy P3 brake controller; the Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter specified for my truck; Cipa custom slip-on towing mirrors; and the 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket - HM40975 specified for my truck. All new Chevy Silverado 1500's (even the base model with no options) comes from the factory pre-wired with a basic seven wire trailer towing harness already installed. Everything electric just plugged in without a single cut or splice of the wiring or any other wiring modifications. I just followed the instructions in the excellent installation videos on the etrailer.com website. The hitch installed quickly and lined up perfectly with factory bolt holes already on the truck frame, no drilling required. Finally I slipped on the Cipa custom towing mirrors and I was ready to tow after about two hours work. If I would have ordered my truck with a factory tow package, integrated brake controller, and extendable towing mirrors, the options would have run me slightly over $1450 on a new Chevy truck. Instead, I spent two hours of my own time doing the installations and paid about $550 for all the parts by ordering by from etrailer.com. Nice savings. You need to have a good set of socket and open end wrenches, including a torque wrench adjustable to a minimum of 110 ft/lbs for the hitch bolts. Spend some time and review all the installation videos for the parts that you need to order. The etrailer.com website also has downloadable installation instructions provided by the parts manufacturers. 477371

The wiring adapter.made the installation of the brake controller a simple plug n`play installarion. the video allowed me to know where to plug in the controller and where to install the fuses. The fuses are not included but we're already installed in my vehicle. Probably included in the tow package. The wiring adapter insures me that every connection is correct. Works perfectly. 563460

I'm using these products to pull a 30ft travel trailer and it does a GREAT job! Hooking up the distribution bars is so fast and easy they just slide in and your done, and the brake controller automatically sees your trailer and saves your settings, so you don't have anything else to do!! 309790

2016 Chevrolet Suburban

Purchased the Tekonsha P3 brake controller and wiring harness for my 2016 Chevy Suburban with bucket seats and console. While the harness made connection very easy, the brake controller could not be mounted under the dash properly. It needs to be level and aligned for proper operation. Space is not available in this vehicle for the controller. I was very disappointed that it couldn't be used as I had another on a 2010 pickup. I had to use a physically smaller brake controller that could mount along the lower dash instead of below. I consider the P3 an excellent and versatile brake controller, however it could not be properly mounted in this vehicle. 646767

Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Brake Controller Solution for 2017 Chevy Silverado that Doesn't Like Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
  • Factory integrated brake controllers in newer trucks are not always reliable with electric over hydraulic actuators. The newer trucks mostly all say their integrated controllers work with the EOH setups but we've found that it isn't always the case. What you described happening is an example of an integrated controller not working right with the actuator so an aftermarket controller will be your best option. The Prodigy P3 part # 90195 will be your best option. This is our most reliable...

  • Parts Needed for Converting Trailer to EOH Disc Brake Operation
  • To convert a trailer with hydraulic disc brakes to electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) actuator operation you will need to either replace or immobilize the existing surge coupler so it no longer compresses. • The wiring harness that you need is part # 3016. One end plugs into the P3 brake controller, part # 90195, and the other end plugs into the connector under the dash of your 2019 Chevy Suburban. Since you have the tow package you'll have that connector. Take a look at the video I attached. At around the 2:25 mark you'll see the adapter plugged into under the dash.

  • Installing a P2 Brake Controller in a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500
  • All you will need to install the P2 brake controller in your 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 is the proper wiring harness. For your truck it is # 3016. There was a time when you would have to hardwire the brake controller to the tow package wiring on GM trucks. But for your 2016 GM went back to providing a port to plug it right in. I have included a link to a video showing how and where the 3016 harness installs.

  • To install a brake controller on your 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4x4, you will just need the vehicle specific plug-in adapter. These adapters are usually brand specific. For example, if you go with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller, # 90195, which is one of the top brake controllers on the market, then you will want to use their adapter, # 3016. I've attached an installation video of this setup on a 2017 Silverado for you to check out. If you are undecided on a brake controller...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ
  • We do not carry the factory brake controller for your 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 but we have numerous aftermarket options that have proven to be far superior to the factory controllers. For a model that takes up very little space I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # 331-EBRH-ACCV2. Unlike most other controllers the interface with the Tow-Pro Elite is just a little knob that, once installed, looks like an OEM knob. And to plug this controller into the factory brake controller port...

  • Factory Brake Controller Port for 2016 Silverado 1500 LTZ
  • Based on my research, your 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ should have the factory brake controller connector installed. It will be located behind the lower portion of the dash on the left side. There will be a box that has a lid on it, directly behind the parking brake. Just remove the lid to expose the brake controller port. I have attached an installation video on a 2014 Silverado for you to check out. The location and installation process for your 2016 model will be the same....

  • Brake Controller and Install Harness Recommendation for 2018 Chevy Suburban
  • To install a brake controller in your 2018 Chevy Suburban only requires the install harness part # 3016 which is a confirmed fit. It plugs into the brake controller port under your dash. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies...

Since your truck has a factory-installed 7-way wiring setup all you will need is the controller itself and the mating wiring adapter that will plug in under your dash. Installation will be a snap. GM already ran the needed wiring. • Recommended Trailer Brake Controller for 2018 GMC Sierra 1500
  • For your 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. I really like this controller because of its easy-to-read LCD display that doesn't require any code-deciphering like on other controllers and its 5 storable settings that allow for easy transition between different trailers or drivers. This is an excellent, proportional controller that will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them...

  • Recommendation for Towing Trailer with Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes with Four Chevy Silverados
  • As you mentioned, the integrated brake controllers on your Silverado 3500 trucks will typically not work with electric over hydraulic trailer brakes.
