When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Ask the Experts about this Titan Brake Actuator

  • Surge Brake Actuator Needed That is Compatible with Drum Brakes and a 2-5/16" Hitch Ball
If you are looking for a brake actuator that works with drum brakes and a 2-5/16" hitch ball then 2 of our most popular options are from Titan. We have a weld-on application with part # T1521000 as well as a bolt-on application with part # T2477600. These fit 3" wide trailer tongues and do not come with lockouts. I am also linking our selection of surge brake actuators with a 2-5/16" hitch ball that are compatible with drum brakes. Feel free to filter through the selection or send me...

  • Recommended Surge Brake Actuator For 17000lb Trailer
To replace your current 16500lb actuator with a heavier duty option I recommend the Titan Brake Actuator - Painted - Drum - 2-5/16" Ball - Weld On - 20,000 lbs # T1521000 if your trailer has drum brakes, or the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Drop and Electric Lockout - Disc - Zinc - 2-5/16" Ball - 20K # DM8204311 if your trailer has disc brakes. Both of the options have a 20000lb towing capacity which is the next step up from the 16500lb actuator your currently have, and both will...

  • Need Welding Instructions for the Titan Model 20 Brake Actuator, # T1521000
I spoke with my contact at Titan and his recommendation for the Titan Brake Actuator, # T1521000, was to weld in all areas where you have sufficient metal to metal contact. He did mention that you should stay 1/4 to 1/2 inches away from the master cylinder when welding. It is strongly suggested that all welding be done in a well ventilated area. Welding galvanized metal produces toxic fumes which are very hazardous to your health. If you have any uncertainties, I would consider contacting...

  • Connecting Brake Actuator With Electric Reverse Lockout
If your brake actuator has electrical wires these indicate that your actuator has a reverse lockout function. The wires connect to your trailer wiring to activate this electric reverse lockout function. (This allows you to back up the trailer without causing the brakes to engage.) One wire connects to your trailer frame to serve as a ground (be sure to make a solid connection to a clean or preferably bare metal surface); the other connects to the reverse light wire on your trailer connector....

  • How to Remove the Master Cylinder Assembly on a Titan Model 20 Brake Actuator
The master cylinder assembly on the Titan model 20 actuators, like # T1521000 as an example, is bolted to the inside of the actuator. Take a look at the picture I have included as an example. There are 2 bolts on each side holding in the assembly. Remove the bolts, the brake line, and the cap and the assembly should come out.

  • Titan Model 20 Drum Brake Actuator and Electric Lockout Recommendation
We have what you need, but we don't have the exact part number you listed as it has been discontinued. You would want the part # T1521000 as it is a Titan Model 20 actuator and then for an electric lock out you would also need the # T4748800.
