Video Transcript for Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Coupler - Standard Coupler - BD43805W0317 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bulldog heavy duty, cast set coupler, with a wedge latch. The heavy duty coupler is ideal for utility, livestock, cargo, and construction trailers. It's made from a steel construction and comes with a gray primer finish, allows you to easily paint the trailer coupler to whatever color you want. It's going to feature a wedge style latch, very secure, very easy to use. To open it up, you just lift up on this little trigger. Open the latch, and you can see how that moves that wedge to an open position to receive hitch ball.

I do want to mention that the latch up here, does not stay in the open position. To get it to stay in the open position, you would simply just insert a coupler pin through there, and that would hold it into the open position, and then once you're connected, you would remove the pin, allow the latch to drop, and really that's all there is to it. Very secure, very easy to use. Now, if you're in need of a coupler pin, or a coupler lock, you can find those at, they are sold separately. The pinhole diameter right here, for a coupler pin, or a coupler lock, is going to be five sixteenths of an inch. Then the width of that area, from edge to edge, it's going to measure about one inch, you need to make sure that that pin has a usable pin length, or a span of at least one inch.

The unit also features a built-in jack attachment point, that allows for quick, easy mounting of a standard, round utility jack. The mount holes are already there, they're already threaded, they're going to be spaced around three inches apart on center, which is like an industry standard. Again, they are threaded for easy installation and mounting, hardware mounting, hardware not included. This is designed to be a weld-on installation, it welds to your A frame. It's designed for fifty degree, A frame trailer tongues. It's designed to receive a two inch hitch ball.

We take a measurement of the length real quick, from very back, to very front, that's going to give us a measurement of about seventeen and five eighths of an inch. Again, that's from the very back of the unit, to the very front of the unit. The hole right here for your jack, that's going to give us a diameter of two and one quarter inches, and this coupler has a capacity of eight thousand pounds. That's going to do it for today's look at the Bulldog heavy duty, cast head coupler with a wedge latch.

Got lazy one day and tried to move my trailer with the tractor and the corner of the implement I had on there and bent the coupler. Being a welded on part I wanted to place it with a quality part. Could of bought local but etrailer is a no hassle outfit. Thx guys

This is great, the only thing about it is that the locking device gets stuck and I have to hit it with something hard to release the ball but this is a great coupler.

The coupler is the kind of quality that I have come to expect from Bulldog and eTrailer provided a great price and unbelievably quick shipment.

It works great easy hookup and have no complaints about it and I had wish I 1 years ago

Good product fit perfect best shipping we’ve ever had have used company before best trailer parts anywhere thanks

I haven't installed it yet, but it looks to be great quality. Was packaged securely and delivered in great shape.

Shipped to us extremely fast and in great shape. Exactly as described. Only suggestion would be to have an option to not have the last inch or so painted. We are cutting off our old tongue and welding on this one, we need to strip the paint off to weld properly. No big deal but would be a nice option. Great product!

Arrived in great condition and quickly

  • Troubleshooting Latch Style Coupler vs Collar Lock Coupler For an A Frame Trailer
I can help you understand the difference between the latch lock style for couplers and the collar lock style. First let's talk about the latch style. If installed properly this style of coupler will work great. Determining if it is latched properly is a little more visually difficult than the collar style though. If properly installed the bottom of the latch mechanism should sit against the ball with no space. If your coupler is designed for a 2 inch ball size, you should be using...

  • Is There An A-Frame Coupler Compatible With A 1-7/8 Ball
I do have an option for you but we currently do not carry a standard A-frame Coupler that takes a 1-7/8" ball. I recommend to switch your ball to 2" ball and use Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch part # BD43805W0317. This particular coupler is designed for 8,000 lbs gross towing weight. I have attached a link to the 2" balls we carry.

  • Weight Capacity Of Trailer Coupler On New Flat-Bed Tandem Trailer
I have attached a helpful article that explains trailer hitch balls and their capacities. As the article states, 2 inch balls are typically rated with a towing capacity between 3,500 lbs to 8,000 lbs. A 2-5/16 inch ball is normally rated to be able to handle loads between 6,000 and 30,000 lbs. I recommend returning to the dealer that sold you the trailer for a clarification. If you can see the rating on the coupler reads it is rated for 7,000 lbs, that would be for the towing capacity...

  • Can the Tightness of Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Coupler BD43805W0317 be Adjusted
The latch mechanism on the Bulldog coupler # BD43805W0317 is a basic latch like # F660801. There is some adjustment available, nothing underneath, but it is basically just the threaded part that holds the top and bottom sections together than can be adjusted. The coupler, when secured around the ball, needs to be able to move around the ball, just not pull up and off of it. If it was tight around the ball it would bind up and something would break because trailers need to move and pivot...

  • A-Frame Trailer Coupler that Can be Bolted Onto a Trailer
Bulldog A-frame trailer coupler # BD43805W0317 does not have holes on the side because it is a weld-on coupler. Coupler # BD44150WH301 can be bolted on but it is for a 2-5/16 inch ball, not a 2 inch ball like # BD43805W0317. All of the other A-frame couplers we have are weld-on applications. If you go with a weld-on coupler the welding will need to be performed by a qualified professional welder.

  • How to Determine Actual Weight Capacity of Tandem Axle Trailer
Your trailer should have an identification/safety sticker that indicates its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) which is the most the loaded trailer can weigh. If it is a brand new trailer this will unambiguously tell you its capacity; if it was pre-owned it is possible replacement parts were installed. It does sound as though your trailer was over-spec on the axles (a total capacity of 7000-lbs) relative to the coupler on the trailer which you said is rated for 5000-lbs trailer weight....

  • Does Master Lock Heavy-Duty Coupler and Latch Lock Combo # 3784DAT Fit a 2 Inch Coupler
That's interesting, because Master Lock coupler lock # 3784DAT does indeed fit a 1-7/8 inch. 2 inch, and 2-5/16 inch coupler. Even the instructions from their site show it fitting a 1-7/8 and 2-5/16 inch coupler. They don't show the 2 inch because it does not require any special steps (there is a little insert, included, that has to be on for 1-7/8 inch and UFP couplers but removed otherwise).
