Video Transcript for Reese Fifth Wheel - Fixed Fifth Wheel - RP30047 Review

Today we are going to review part number RP30047. This is the Reese Fifth Wheel Dual Jaw Trailer Hitch with a 16,000 pound weight capacity. This fifth wheel trailer hitch uses the two jaw locking system, which will provide more jaw to king pin contact than the economical slide bar models, it will give you less rattle and greater security. I am going to open up the jaws to show you the dual jaws. If you move the safety latch over, that will allow you to pull open the handle. When you pull open on the handle, there is a little notch that will latch onto the plate and it will hold the jaws open right here.

So you can see the dual jaws let me release it and you will see the dual jaw right here and they basically close and wrap completely around the king pin and give you less rattle and greater security. Now it does have the 4-way pivoting head, which will ease hook up on un-leveled ground. Basically you can see it move side-to-side and it also moves front-to-back. This one being brand new is pretty stiff, but it gives you 4-way movement. Now on the side, let me rotate this and I will show you on the side that, there is a height adjustment when you install the cross-member to the fixed legs, you will notice that there is four sets of holes that you can put the bolts through and basically you can get the correct height you need above your truck bed.

If you put the bolts or if you install the cross-member in the top bolts, that would be the lowest hitch height, which would be 14 1/2inches. If you put the bolts in the lower holes, that would raise it up to the maximum of 18 inches, so there is a 3 1/2 inch height adjustment that you can do above your truck bed. The installation on this hitch is very simple and the removal is also. The fixed legs as you can see right here flare out, so they do have a wide stance and they are a one piece leg, which will offer excellent stability. The finish on this is a black powder coat finish on both the legs and the hitch.

It will resist corrosion. This locking handle that I have demonstrated, does have a nice cushion grip on it and again just to show you how that opens, let me turn the handle push it down, so you will be able to see the dual jaws. You just pull open and it will latch into place and back your king pin in, fifth wheel king pin, release it and it will be around the king pin and just push down on your safety latch. You will notice that once you push the safety latch right here around the handle and push it down, it keeps the handle from being operated, which will keep the jaws around the king pin. There is a hole on the latch and a whole on the head and if you put a pin or clip through there or even a padlock, which is sold separately, for additional security that will keep it locked into place.

Now I am demonstrating this hitch on base rails, but they are not included with this part, they are sold separately. The rails and the mounting kit will be sold separately. We do recommend if possible using a custom install mounting bracket, because that will cut the time in half compared to a universal install kit. This hitch will fit the Curt, The Valley, The Draw-Tite, the Hidden Hitch and the Reese Space Rails. Again the gross towing weight capacity on this is 16,000 pounds. The vertical load limit on this is 4,000 pounds. The hitch height we mentioned is 14 1/2 to 18 inches and it comes with a five year limited warranty. The pin and clips that attach it to the rails will be included with the hitch. I just want to show you the rear of the hitch basically to show you the large pivot bolt. This head is installed on a pivot beam and its held in by this large pivot bolt with a pin and clip, so if you remove that pin and clip, you can pull that pivot bolt out and then the whole head and pivot beam would come out of the cross-member. Very simple installation. That should do it for review on part number RP30047.

by:

Ordered a fifth wheel hitch on a Monday, not really expecting to see it for a week and it was at my door on Wednesday. Now to have weather accomodating enough to install it. I've been viewing the online videos and they helped make my decision to purchase and install myself.

by:

I have not had the chance to tow with it yet, the wife has, and it worked great, even the people I bought my trailer from really like the unit

by:

Excellet - Outstanding. Ordered and shipped on Tuesday deliverd on Thursday. Excellent easy to understand directions. All parts fit per directions. etrailer is a model complany that all others should follow. 2004 Chevy Duramax long bed.

by:

Install was easier than I anticipated. The hardest part was tightening the rail bolts...limited access. If I were to do it again. I would get everything positioned then loosen the bed bolts, raise the bed slightly and tighten the bolts. Overall, I'm very pleased with this kit.

by:

Was really easy to install, one thing that should be included is a short bracket to resecure the brake lines in their new location.

by:

Way to goThe quick install custom base rails made for a much easier install friend and I had the fifth wheel installed in about 3 hours minus the 45 minute dinner break. Easy to follow directions hardest part was reaching over fuel tank to tighten bolts. No holes to drill in frame only bed made it a snap. Would definetly suggest it to anyone.

by:

I installed the custom rail kit and topped it with this hitch. With about 2k miles on it, it works fine. It has a positive lock when the jaws are closed. It lined up with the rails I installed perfectly. Although this is my first fifth wheel hitch, I am completely satisfied with it.

by:

Custom 5th Wheel bracketsThe custom brackets made for a quick installation with no drilling of the frame, only necessary to drill the bed floor to bold the plates in place. It was hard to get the nuts on the bolts over the gas tank, but I don't know how you could improve on this. The supplied helicoil wires made getting the large front bolts in the frame easy. Instructions were good and model/year specific. The price was great and the shipping was free and fast.

by:

This is a great heavy duty quality product. I installed the kit myself, however the video makes it seem easier than it is. In the end I was able to complete the install, however it significantly longer and required additional tools not listed in the directions. All in all I was very pleased with the product and service provided by etrailer.

by:

I haven't had a chance to install the hitch but I can tell it's pretty beefy. UPS managed to destroy the boxes and yet everything came out without a scratch. Etrailer was outstanding on filling my order and shipping the hitch. I ordered it late Sunday and recieved an email promptly saying the order was received. It arrived at my house 3 days later and I was able to track it all the way. I would recommend using etrailer to anyone. Thank you.

by:

This product was well designed and came all the materials that were required and additional for the various other vehicle installations. The installation was as stated, the only drilling was thru the bed floor. The hardest part of the install was being able to start the driver side rail bolts to the frame bracket. To many items in the way (fuel tank, brake controller, dual exhaust), but overall an excellent package. Took about 3 1/2 hours with two guys, a third would been helpful at times. 2008 Chevrolet Silverado LTZ 2500HD Diesel Crew Cab Short Box

This is my first time pulling a 5th wheel but not the first time traveling in a RV. Looking at the installation kits for these 5th wheels was a learning experience! Not many places sell the Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit. Since this is my first time pulling I wanted the security of knowing all four bolts holding the Base rails to the frame were attached to bracket. I'm not the one doing the install, but from what I see, the time should be cut by 1/3 from the other way of installing the base rails. eTrailer was the only one of the 5 websites I checked that had what I was looking for.

  • Can a Slider 5th Wheel Hitch Be Used on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with 5.8 Foot Bed
I do have an option for you but a manual sliding 5th wheel hitch like the Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # 16516 will not allow for proper turning clearance between the cab of the truck and loft of the trailer while executing a 90 degree turn on a truck with a bed shorter than 6-1/2' long. In order to obtain sufficient clearance you will need to use a fixed 5th wheel hitch and a rotating pin box. For a fixed 5th wheel hitch I recommend the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # RP30047...

Universal-type kits like this one from Reese are the most cost-effective option, but take the most time for installation. The max trailer weight you can tow with a fifth wheel would be the figure GM gave you for the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 of 9,200 lb. There are several factors that contribute to the towing capacity like gear ratio, engine size, cab/bed size etc. but if GM puts out a max towing capacity for a vehicle that number is the max you could do regardless of trailer style. Here is the formula to use to determine if you have clearance to make tight turns: (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the gooseneck ball to the truck cab B = Offset used (0 since you don't have one) C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2. How long is your flat bed though since you have something different from the picture? If the hitch you have is in fact a B and W Turnoverball then we do have the Companion for Flat Bed trucks part # BWRVK3050 which is designed for the recessed ball...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for Use with Reese Revolution on Fifth Wheel Trailer
Since your trailer has a Reese Revolution pin box (which is the best way setup for a truck with as short of a bed as you have), you need a fixed hitch that attaches to a rail kit in four places. The Companion style hitch like you mentioned which attaches through the gooseneck ball shank cannot be used with the Revolution pin boxes. The Reese Select Plus # RP30081 that you referenced would be a great choice but you'd need a rail kit installed in the bed of your truck. If you can get me...

The Sidewinder pin box # RP34FR is rated for 20,000 lbs . You also could use the Air Ride # RP61422 if you prefer for a smoother ride. This will move the turning point of your trailer back to allow for cab clearance when turning....

  • Is There a Universal Fifth Wheel Rail Kit that Fits Most Fifth Wheel Hitches
The Reese universal fifth wheel rail kit part # RP30035 is what you are wanting. It fits nearly all trucks out there and is designed to fit the standard fifth wheel rail hitches which are by far the most common out there. These hitches fit the standard above bed rails like this that are 22 inches apart like the part # RP30047.

  • Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch for a 2017 F-250 Super Crew with 6 3/4 Bed
Since you have a Keystone trailer with the Turn Max technology you don't need a slider at all actually. Manual or automatic slider would not be needed. With fifth wheel hitch you actually don't really need them to sit higher than the bed rails of the truck. It's actually the opposite in nearly every situation that the hitch sits below the top of the bed rails. The pin box of the truck extends down far enough to compensate for that. The Reese fifth wheel hitch part # RP30047 is a similar...

  • Sidewinder And Hitch Recommendations For A 2021 Cougar 316RLS
Since you have a Lippert 1621 pin box the 5th Airborne Premium 5th Wheel Air Ride King Pin w/ Sidewinder and Turret - 16,000lbs Item # RP61422 is the correct replacement. For the hitch I recommend the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Dual Jaw - 16,000lbs # RP30047 with the Reese 5th Wheel Rail Adapter for Ram OEM 5th Wheel Towing Prep Package - 25,000lbs # RP30154. • How to Mount Reese 30047 5th Wheel Hitch to 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 With Puck System
In order to mount your Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30047 to your 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 with the factory puck system, you will need an adapter because the hitch won't fit directly in the pucks as it is not designed for that. So what you'll need in order to use this hitch is the Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter for Chevy/GMC OEM 5th Wheel Towing Prep Package # DM6333. You will simply attach this adapter to the puck system in your truck and then attach your Reese hitch to the adapter and...

  • Will Demco 13k Autoslide Hitch Allow for Turning Clearance in 5-1/2 foot Truck Bed
The Demco 13k Auto Slider part # DM8550041 will automatically slide up to 22-1/2 inches as you make tight turns. That's substantially more than other slider hitches and it's currently the only slider hitch we can recommend for a truck with a 5-1/2 foot bed like I am assuming you have. There is a formula that you can use if you want to be cautious though. (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the fifth wheel jaw center to the truck cab (you can use rear axle center) B = Slider distance...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for 2005 Ford F-150 4x4 Dual Cab with 5.5 Ft Bed
For a fifth-wheel hitch for your 2005 Ford F-150 with 5 foot 6 inch bed, I would recommend the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, part # RP30928, which is a 20K hitch. There are a few reasons that I recommend a 20K hitch, the first is that there are more features on the 20K hitch, like a floating head that makes hook up easier and a locking double jaw. Another reason is that in the future if you decide to go with a heavier trailer, you will not have to purchase another hitch. To install, you...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Rail Kit and Hitch for 2017 F-150 & Highland Ridge Open Range Light 5th Wheel
The 2018 Highland Ridge Open Range Light lf318rls has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 9,995 lbs and an unloaded weight of 7,895 lbs. According to Ford, your 2017 F-150 Ecoboost 3.5L Supercrew 4x4 has a towing capacity of 10,200 lbs. So, you won't have any problem towing this 5th wheel trailer. For your 2017 F-150, I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50087-58 which is a custom fit for your vehicle. Then...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch and In-Bed 7-Way for Long Bed GMC Truck with Rails
Hey Steve, it sounds like you have a set of fifth wheel rails in the bed of your truck already and are just looking for a hitch to fit into them as well as a 7-way kit that puts the 7-way up in the bed. Check out the attached picture to see what the rails you have SHOULD look like. For a hitch you could then use the Reese 16k part # RP30047 since you have a long bed and do not need additional clearance to make tight turns. Then for a 7-way you would want the part # 41157 to give you...

  • Can 2021 Ram with Ram Boxes Tow Fifth Wheel Trailer
There is definitely a way to tow a 5th wheel trailer with your 2021 Ram that is equipped with the RamBox, but it's going to require some new components both on the trailer and your truck. The issue with the Ram Boxes is that they make the bed rails really narrow on the truck, so much so that you can't make turns without a standard pin box or adapter like a Goose Box knocking into them. The only solution for this is replacing the pin box on the trailer with a pivoting option like the Reese...

  • Can 2020 Ram 1500 with Ram Box Tow Fifth Wheel Trailer
Hey Craig, In order to tow a fifth wheel trailer using a 2020 Ram 1500 with RamBox you'll need to use a rotating pin box like the Reese Sidewinder which will be specific to the trailer. This is so that the pivot point is moved up high enough that the Ram Boxes won't get hit around corners. If the trailer uses a Lippert 1621 then the correct Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret is part # RP34FR. Then, you can complete the setup with the Reese Quick-Install Custom Outboard...

  • How to Tow Fifth Wheel Trailer with 2018 RAM 2500 w/ Ram Box and Air Suspension
The only way you can safely tow a fifth wheel trailer with a Ram truck that has a Ram Box is with a Sidewinder pin box replacement as the pin box would no longer swing to the sides in the truck bed and hit the narrower bed rails. Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have now in order to pick out the correct one. There should be a sticker or a stamping on the OEM pin box of the trailer that will list the pin box number that is on the trailer. Once...

• Troubleshooting Coupling Issues With A Reese Sidewinder Pin Box And Reese 5th Wheel Hitch
There are a few options to help ease your Sidewinder's coupling with your Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30047: 1. Make sure that your trailer is level. This will ensure that the king pin is going in straight. The jaws of a hitch are usually pretty forgiving but can bind up if the king pin is off center too much. 2. You can use a lube plate like # RP83002. This helps the king pin slide into hitch with ease and also helps prevent scratches to the skid plate. 3. Lube the jaws of the...

If you do, you will need a Sidewinder such as the Reese Sidewinder Fifth-Wheel Pin Box # RP34FR. To find the correct Sidewinder what you will need to know is the manufacturer and model number of the pin box on your fifth wheel and match that with the correct replacement.
