Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Single Dimensions

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Recon hitch offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" thick solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

Side PivotPin

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hookup is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. These dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting.

Easy Installation

The Recon hitch is designed to mount to the included industry-standard base rails, which install in your truck bed and are anchored to the included custom brackets that attach to your vehicle's frame.

Recon detailedRecon detailed 2

Assembling the hitch is quick and easy because of its lightweight, 2-piece design. First, attach the base to the base rails. Then simply slide the head assembly into the opening in the base. There are 3 different height settings to choose from - just slide the head up or down to find your desired height.

Recon detailedRecon detailed 2

Once you have chosen your desired height, use the included pin to secure the head to the base. Finally, tighten the bolt to eliminate any movement and rattle.

Video Transcript for Review of Demco Fifth Wheel - Replacement Head - DM6169

Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this replacement head for the Demco Recon 5th Wheel trailer hitch. Has a 21,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this part here will replace the head assembly on your Demco Recon 5th Wheel trailer hitch. It does work on part numbers DM8550043, part number DM8550045, and part number DM8550046.

Those three hitches we do sell separately on our website. Now, this head here will have a nice wraparound, single-piece jaw. Provides a nice, secure connection. Does give you a 360 degree jaw-to-king-pin contact, and because of that, it'll give you less rattle, more security than the slide bar jaws. Also, if you noticed on this, it has this large 3/4 inch thick solid steel locking bar.

Right in the front here, that'll reinforce that connection of your coupled trailer. And when it does close, this will automatically lock into place when the jaw closes. Now, this is a double pivot hitch head, which will ease hookup, help limit chucking. Basically, when this is installed into the yoke head on the hitch, it'll pivot front to back and side to side. Does have a nice spring loaded handle over here with a nice comfort grip.

Allows for simple coupling, and has a nice tethered safety pin here that lets you secure the handle in the open or the closed position. Right now, it is closed just to show you how you open it. You just take out the pin, and again, it's tethered so you can just let it hang there. And then what you'll do is pull this handle all the way out. And once you get it far enough you can hear it locked into place.

And now you can see the jaws open, ready to accept your connection. So once you slide the king pin in there it'll wrap around there, lock into place, and then just put your pin back through the hole to secure it. This is a sturdy steel construction. Has a nice rust resistant black powder coat finish on it. It is made in the USA. Few specs on this. The gross towing weight capacity is 21,000 pounds, vertical load limits 5,250 pounds. But again, if you have it in the open position you can even flip the pin and clip through there to lock it into the open position if you prefer. But that should do it for the review on the replacement head for the Demco Recon 5th Wheel trailer hitch..

by:

Love it. It works well

by:

Ultra Fast shipping and delivery Josh in costumer service awesome for getting dimensions quickly from Demco not listed easy install just waiting on RV to arrive to go pick it up.

by:

I like the hitch but for some reason after a long trip it seems to get loose and buck a little bit even after I torque it to spec! Other than that it's a great hitch.

by:

Easy to read and install. Just received it although it covers my safety chain brackets, should be a easy fit!

by:

It is heavier built than I expected, haven't gotten to use it yet, but I'm itching to. Extremely happy with the set up of the hitch. The welds are all clean and solid. I will write another review after my first use. But overall I'm extremely happy with the hitch so far. Good job Demco and thank you etrailer for a very easy and stress free transaction.

by:

Easy install. This set up makes switching between 5th wheel and Gooseneck a breeze.

by:

I like the ability to remove the entire hitch and only leave a small round plug on the bed floor.

by:

Fit perfect in my 2020 f350 tremor

by:

Very noisy!! Makes you think something broke. It’s good if you don’t want to break the bank. But when parking you’ll hear the loud noises coming from the hitch. Other than that it works fine.

by:

So far so good pulling my fifth wheel around. I went this route so I could have dual purpose and not corner myself with just a drop in plate with my trucks factory fifth wheel package. No issues with this hitch, locks tight and no slop.

by:

Hitch works great and delivery from etrailer was fast.

by:

I bought this to replace a Demco Autoslide hitch. The Autoslide was great but too heavy for me. Because of my bad back, this was a great choice! The hitch is awesome, easy to put in and out. Quiet and smooth towing. Thx E-Trailer!

by:

Easy to set up and use I borrowed a buddies cause I bought a camper and didn’t have a hitch set up in the bed of my truck just had the goose neck ball pulled real nice so I order o e just like it

by:

This hitch met all my expectations and beyond. I have traveled over 10 thousand miles so far and it has worked very smoothly. Thanks JoAnn

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Rails and Hitch for a 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab Short Bed
To get the B&W Patriot # BWRVK3200 to work with your 2006 Dodge Ram you're going to need a set of 5th wheel rails # DM8552016-71. These rails are custom fit to your vehicle so they'll just bolt right up to the frame. It is worth mentioning that since you have a short bed, I'd actually recommend going with a sliding hitch # BWRVK3270. The reason being is, when short bed trucks use fixed hitches to make tight turns, there's going to be significantly less room for the trailer and truck cab,...

To install the Demco Hijacker Autoslide fifth wheel hitch part # DM8550034 that you referenced in the bed of your 2011 Ram 3500 short bed all you need is the rail kit part # DM8552016-71 which is a confirmed custom fit rail kit for your truck. You want to go with a custom install kit over a universal one as it will minimize drilling and install time considerably.

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation For 2003 Dodge 2500 Diesel With 6 Foot Bed
Your 2003 Dodge 2500 has a 6 ft bed so you will either need a slider fifth wheel hitch or need to swap the pin box out for a Sidewinder. This is so you can execute 90 degree turns. You will want to choose a fifth wheel hitch that is matched to the weight of the trailer you plan on towing. The best fifth wheel hitch I recommend is the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider. If you need an 18,000 lb hitch you would want part # DM8550034. For a bigger fifth wheel hitch...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Short Bed with Cummins
From the research I did it looks like the towing capacity for a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins has a towing capacity of 12,800 lbs depending on how it is equipped. Sounds like you are looking at the correct weight range of trailers for your truck (which looks great by the way). Now since you have a short bed truck you are going to need to get a slider fifth wheel hitch so that you can make tight turns without cab/trailer overhang interference. The hitch will slide back and will allow the...

Sounds like you have the remains of a universal fifth wheel kit like the # RP30035 installed in your 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 since you mentioned having L-brackets already installed. The frustrating part though is that without knowing what brand brackets you have I can't really recommend a rail kit since you can't mix bracket and rail manufacturers. • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for Towing a GVWR 16,250 lb Trailer with a 2006 Ram 3500 Short Bed
Typically we recommend going with a 5th wheel hitch that is rated for about 2,000 lbs more than what the GVWR of your trailer is. That way if you were to totally max out the weight of your trailer your hitch isn't maxed out as well. Since your 2006 Ram 3500 is a short bed you will want to look into getting a sliding 5th wheel hitch to avoid trailer-to-cab contact when taking sharp turns. The best option for you to go with would be the Demco Hijacker Autosliding 5th Wheel Hitch. This...

There are a few different HiJacker 5th wheel hitches that use Ultra in their name. All of them fit in industry standard above the bed rails. For an installation kit for your 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 you have some options. If your truck has 4 wheel drive you can use installation kit # DM8552016-71 or # DM8552015-71. The difference is that # DM8552015-71 requires more drilling. If your truck is a 2 wheel drive model use # DM8552017-71.

However, the hitch will use industry standard base rails, so I recommend instead using the Reese Custom Installation Kit # RP50140-58. The best choice for a rail kit would be the Demco Premier Series Above-Bed Base Rails and Custom Installation Kit item # DM8552016-71. This is an above bed kit which is what you will have to install to use the 18k Demco Autoslider item # DM8550034 you were looking at. I strongly recommend this hitch. The Autoslider will give you 14" of travel for extra clearance when turning and backing. This is the most out of any sliding hitch. A 21K 5th wheel hitch is massive overkill for your needs....

Most importantly, in this article is how to calculate the clearance to verify if you need a hitch with offset to make the most of your pivoting...

  • Can Demco Recon 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Be Used With Ford Factory Puck System?
The Demco Recon 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Single Jaw - Above Bed - 21,000 lbs # DM8550043 is able to tow 21,000 lbs, but it does not come ready to install with the Ford factory puck system. To use it with the factory rail kit, you will need to use an adapter like the Reese Elite Series Underbed Rail Adapter for Standard 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches - 20,000 lbs # RP30156. This is the only adapter that we know is compatible with this hitch and your factory rail kit and it will reduce your...

  • Does The Demco Recon 5TH Wheel Hitch Need Lube or a Teflon Plate?
I recommend using a Lube Plate # 16721 over covering the Demco Recon 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550043 in Grease # L74FR. The lube plate is much cleaner and you will not have to constantly clean off the dirt and apply new grease over time.

  • Comparing The Demco Recon And Curt CrossWing 5th Wheel Hitches
The Demco Recon # DM8550043 and Curt CrossWing # C86JR have quite a few differences that separate the two similar designs. The Recon has an extra 1,000lbs of capacity and comes with a 15-1/2", 17-1/4", or 18" height setting. The CrossWing has a 16-3/8", 18-3/8", and 20-3/8" height setting so it can sit a bit higher, which could be beneficial depending on the height need for your trailer to sit level while towing. Both heads have rubber dampeners to help with ride quality, but the CrossWing...

  • Compatibility of Andersen Ultimate 5th Wheel Adapter and TrailAir Pin Box Along with Recommenation
The Andersen Ultimate Connection 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch System with Adapter - 20,000 lbs # AM3200 is compatible with the TrailAir pin box you have when you use the Rota-Flex lockout kit. This unfortunately removes the extremely nice cushioning designed to be integrated into your pin box, so I recommend instead using the Demco Recon 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - 21,000 lbs # DM8550043 with your 2019 Cougar 366RDS. The Demco Recon 5th wheel hitch weighs just 89 lbs and can be installed in...

  • How Much Does the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3305 Weigh
The shipping weight of the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3305 is 152 lbs so it will be just under that after you remove the packaging. Although it is still pretty hefty, the head unit part # BWRVC3006 can easily be removed off of the base unit # BWRVB3305 to help make moving the whole hitch more manageable. The head unit itself weighs in at about 70 lbs so it is almost half of the weight of the whole hitch. If you would like something that is a bit lighter then you can use...

  • Recommendation on a Lightweight 5th Wheel Hitch That is Compatible With a Sidewinder Pin Box
I have a solution for you. The Demco Recon 5th Wheel Hitch, # DM8550043, is a lightweight above the bed mounted hitch that is rated a 21K. The total weight of this hitch is 100 lbs. The Demco Recon will mount to the bed of your 2017 Ram 3500 using standard bedrails, like the Demco Universal Bed Rails, # DM6071. If your Ram has the OEM 5th Wheel Towing Pre Package, you can us the Reese 5th Wheel Adapter, # RP30154, to mount the Demco Recon to your vehicle. The Reese adapter will sit into...

  • Wedge for a Lippert Turning Point and a Demco Recon 5th Wheel Hitch
The 6169 number you provided comes back to the Replacement Head for Demco Recon # DM6169. With the picture you provided, it looks like you have the Demco Recon 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550043. The wedge that you would need to use with your Lippert Turning Point is the 5th Airborne Custom Wedge # SWW-05. While the # SWW-05 wedge does not specifically list the Turning Point, we have had customers in the past let us know that this was a fit for their Recon and Turning Point.

  • Is Demco 21K Recon Compatible with Lippert Turning Point for a 2015 Ford F-150 with 5-1/2' Bed
If you have the 13K Demco Autoslider # DM8550040 that installs on industry standard base rails, like part # RP50087-58, then yes, the Demco Recon # DM8550043 will fit in the 5-1/2' bed of your 2015 Ford F-150. As far as compatibility with the Lippert Turning Point pin box goes, since the opening for the Recon hitch head is a little larger than normal 5th wheel hitches I doubt that the universal wedge that comes with the Turning Point will fit correctly. We have had customers say that the...

  • Comparing Demco Recon and B&W Patriot Fifth Wheel Hitch for Ease of Removal/Install
The Demco Recon hitch part # DM8550043 is a well-made fifth wheel hitch that is made here in the USA. I'd put the quality of this hitch up to basically any other hitch manufacturer out there. This hitch weighs 100 lbs which is a bit lighter than most fifth wheel hitches. The B and W Patriot hitch part # BWRVK3255 is also a great option too. Most people consider the jaw system and head design of this hitch to be the best around so it's hard to beat. This hitch is also made in the USA and...

  • Difference Between Sidewinder Reese Revolution and 5th Airborne Pin Box
The Reese Sidewinder and Revolution are the exact same thing. Sidewinder is the brand name when you buy one aftermarket and Revolution is the name if the pin box came on the trailer frame the factory. But they are the exact same. 5th Airborne setups are a cushioned pin box that can be offered as a standalone cushioned pin box or as integrated into a Sidewinder/Revolution. • Is Blue Ox Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter Compatible with a Sidewinder Pin Box?
If you use the Sidewinder in the locked-out position so it's like a standard pin box then you can use the Blue Ox Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # BLU52XR, but if you're needing to use the rotating turret feature for increased turning clearance we need to look at another option as the Blue Ox will basically just spin on the gooseneck ball since that's the only connection point.
