Secure, Interlocking Two-Piece Jaw

A16 Two-Piece Interlocking Jaw

Unlike slide-bar models, the rounded, interlocking, two-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

Three-Point Indicator System

A16 Color Indicator System

Get peace of mind with Curt's color-coded lock indicator. Just look at the indicator - either the one on the handle or the one on the hitch itself - to determine whether the jaw is in the correct position to uncouple (red), couple (yellow) or tow (green).

Curt rebranded this fifth-wheel trailer hitch by changing its name from Q16 to A16 in 2016. All features and specifications remained the same.

Video Transcript for How to Install the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch on a 2019 Ford F-150

Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2019 Ford F-150 we're gonna be checking out the Curt A16 5th wheel hitch. Nowadays these half-ton trucks are really capable and so people are really, you know, putting 'em through the paces, towing a lot of heavy stuff around and whatnot. So if you have a fifth wheel type trailer, whether it's a camper or something else, you're gonna need a way to pull it and that's exactly what this is gonna help you do. So this is gonna be a fixed mount one, meaning that it's just going to drop into your in-bed rails. These are Curt rails but it's kind of an industry standard.

You know, if you have other manufacturers of rails, chances are really, really good this is still just gonna kind of drop into place and work out there. Being that it's fixed, that kind of, you know, brings me to my next point. So on our truck, this is only 5 1/2 foot bed so it's a really short bed and a lot of times what I usually recommend is a sliding type hitch, right That way when you make turns and stuff the hitch will go back and give you the cab clearance that you need. That way your trailer don't swing around and end up making contact with your cab corner, damaging the truck and the trailer. But what our customer's doing today is his trailer actually has one of those rotating pin boxes.

I believe it's the Reese Sidewinder. So that's how he can get away with using a fixed one. So this hitch is compatible with those rotating pin boxes. So the side of the hitch and the truck moving, the pin box on the camper will. Now if you have a long bed, really don't need to worry about any of that, right A fixed type hitch is gonna work out just fine.

This particular hitch is gonna be rated for 16,000 pounds so probably more than enough for the F-150, but if you like to go a little overkill, there's a 20,000 pound version of this available as well. The head of it articulates and does have a little bit of movement in there just to help absorb some of that road shock and trucking and things like that and making it easier to hook up, you know. So when you back up, this can kind of move around, you know, and kind of guide itself around that king pin on your trailer. And that's gonna kind of bring me to my next point. This has a dual jaw type design, so it's open right now but maybe I can reach over and close it.

And this thing is, it's no joke here. Whenever that's locked around the king pin, you can see it's super strong. It's no joke. It's going to have complete 360 degree contact and that's gonna really create a secure and good connection, kind of giving you some peace of mind there whenever you're towing your trailer down the road. The hitch head is gonna be adjustable. So I believe there's three different adjustments. You know, you can raise it up or down depending on your trailer and how high your truck sits and everything else. Kind of dial that in and get it as level as possible whenever you're towing. Right now we have it in the middle position and I'm letting you know that because a lot of people ask about Tonneau covers, right And if they're gonna be able to use one and not have to bother at taking the hitch in an out. And you should be in pretty good shape regardless of what Tonneau cover you have. On our truck today, we having one of these roll up ones, pretty common. And this at, even in the middle position and this over it, there's still, I mean, a ton of space here. So even if this was up a few more inches, you'd still have plenty of clearance and in most cases, in most Tonneau covers you shouldn't have anything to worry about. If in the off season, if you don't want this hitch back here, you're not gonna plan on using it for a while, you know, you can pull it in and out, which I'm not gonna lie, these things are pretty heavy. Thankfully though, this one, the actual, the head comes off of it separately. So you can remove those. This'll pop out. So you can get that out of the way and then pull the base out. And both of these independently are pretty manageable together. It's not the easiest thing to do. So by being able to break it apart like that, you know, it kind of turns a two man job into a one-man job. Other than that, you know, a nice hitch, it's well built. I like how it looks. Has kind of that flat black, matte black finish to it. You know, I really can't ask for too much more. Relatively lightweight when you break 'em apart and, you know, something you really can't go wrong with. Honestly, you know what our neighbor did here today, kind of got the whole package, which makes sense on an F-150, you know, pulling a big camper around. He got the Curt rails, he got our Curt in-bed wiring. He even went and did Air Lift airbags and a compressor. So I feel like all that stuff together, he should be really happy with and make his towing experience a comfortable and good one. I do wanna say that, I wanna emphasize this again, if you got a short bed like this and your trailer doesn't have one of those rotating pin boxes on it, it's really important to find a sliding type hitch. I just don't wanna see anyone pop this in their truck, make that turn and end up damaging anything. So a sliding one or that rotating pin box is going to alleviate any of those issues. And that'll finish up our look at of the Curt A16 5th wheel hitch in our 2019 Ford F-150..

Hello, When you say doing a fleet of vehicles with the fifth wheel prep package are you referring to simply adding fifth wheel hitches to these trucks that have the prep package? If so I would only need to know the bed size (in order to know if you need sliding hitches or not) and what capacity (16K, 20K, 24K) you are looking for.

  • Weight of Head Unit and Base of Demco Recon Fifth Wheel Hitch
The Demco Recon 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550043 is made up of the Head Unit # DM6169 and Base Assembly # DM6180, with each piece weighing 50 lbs, making this most lightweight, easy-to-handle fifth wheel hitch available. In terms of locking it the only security measure is a Base Rail Lock # C23256 which locks the hitch to your base rails. There is no way to padlock it to prevent someone from releasing the hitch, though you'd have to be extraordinarily unlucky for someone to just walk...

  • Recommended Custom Bracket Kit, Base Rails and 5th Wheel Hitch for 2007 Ford F-250
I do have a solution for you, but we do strongly advise not mixing brackets and rails from 2 different manufacturers. The reason for this is that they haven't been tested together, so compatibility and fit cannot be guaranteed and the capacity of the setup will be unknown. With that said I recommend using the Curt # C16448-204 base rail and bracket kit which will provide you with a set of industry standard base rails to mount a 5th wheel hitch in. These are a custom bracket kit so it'll...

  • 16k Fifth Wheel Hitch With Jaw that Closes Automatically When Backed Up to Trailer Pin Box
If you have a Reese fifth wheel hitch part # RP30047 there isn't a similar hitch head that would fit on the legs of the hitch that uses a jaw mechanism similar to what you described. Curt has their A16 hitch part # C16120 which has this feature though. When you back the trailer into the hitch it snaps into place and you can see on the handle an indicator that it is secure and ready to tow. Check out the review video for more info.

  • 5th Wheel Base Rail Fit on 2019 Ram 1500 Short Bed With Factory Air Suspension
There is one option for 5th wheel base rails that fit your 2019 Ram 1500 short bed with air suspension, so long as your truck does not have the Multi-Function tailgate. The correct fit for your truck is the following: - Reese Quick-Install Custom Outboard Installation Kit w/ Base Rails # RP56018-53 The Reese base rails # RP56018-53 will allow you to mount any standard 5th wheel hitch, including the Curt A16 # C16120 you mentioned. These are a no-drill install on your truck, which is not...

  • Can Curt Base Legs # C16920 be Installed on Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Slider # C16521
The Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Slider # C16521 that you believe you have can be adjusted from 17-1/2" - 21-1/2" in regards to height. If you were to swap out the R16 Slider for the Replacement Base Legs # C16920 then this would give you the Curt A16 # C16120 which has a height adjustment of 13" - 17". Typically we do recommend using a sliding 5th wheel hitch for short beds like what you rave on your 2014 Ram 350, but if you don't believe you are going to need the sliding...

  • How to Remove Curt Q16 Head from Center Section
No need to worry, Typically it's harder to remove the head after use. I double checked the instructions that I've linked for your convenience, and they state it is only the lynch pin and large pivot pin that need to be removed to remove the head. They do recommend the head and legs be removed as one unit and say that if there is binding they recommend loosening the four 14mm leg mounting bolts to release them from the rails.

  • Is it Possible to Adjust Jaws on Curt Q16 5th Wheel Hitch
I spoke with my contact at Curt about your Curt Q16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, part # C16120, and he said a little play is to be expected in order for the pin to rotate freely. So the jaws should not fit too tightly around the king pin. The jaws are operated by springs. The first time you used your 5th wheel hitch the springs may have been a little stiff. By the second time you used the 5th wheel you likely loosened up the springs and the jaws, resulting in the play you noticed. Also if...

  • Replacing Atwood Freedom Fifth Wheel Hitch
I have a replacement option but unfortunately we do not carry any replacement parts for Atwood fifth wheel hitches. Since Atwood hasn't produced that hitch in a while parts are pretty few and far between. If your hitch is currently not useable I recommend replacing the hitch with a newer option like the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16120. If you can provide the Year/Make/Model of your vehicle and if you have above bed or below bed rails, I would be happy to recommend a new hitch...

  • Is There A Longer Handle Available For A Curt A16 Fifth Wheel Hitch
Curt currently only offers a standard size replacement handle with part # C58UR for the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16120. My father has the same issue with his Silverado and B&W Companion and just keeps a folding 2-step ladder in the bed to pull the handle as well as to help him get in and out of the bed to get firewood out. I recommend picking up a really compact ladder like the Telesteps Folding Step Stool # TE97FR to help reach the handle.

  • Will The Convert-A-Ball Work With B&W Companion Offset Ball Towing 5TH Wheel Lippert Turning Point?
While the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter w/ Offset # CAB-C5GX1216 is compatible with the 4" Offset Ball # BWGNXA4685 do note this will void your chassis warranty and possibly any other warranties on your 5th wheel camper. While the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY48GR is also not certified to retain the factory warranty at this time it is a much better option than the Convert-A-Ball for reducing chucking. If not voiding any parts of...

  • Troubleshooting Bedrail Clearance When Installing A Curt A16 Hitch In A 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500
If you use an adapter like the Curt # C88KR instead of replacing the legs on your Curt A16 # C16120 your hitch will sit 2-1/2" higher to offset the height of the 24's bedrails. The B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3710 you referenced does have a top height of 18-3/4" if you'd rather replace the hitch, but it really just comes down to how much you'd like to spend.
