Simple Removal for Full Bed Access

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to the included Turnoverball gooseneck hitch. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work. When you're done towing, the Companion can be removed for complete bed access.

B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Trailer Hitch

B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch

The included Turnoverball serves as a sturdy, custom base for installing the Companion in the bed of your truck, but it's also one of the most recognizable gooseneck hitches on the market.

Gooseneck Specs:

  • Gross towing weight: 30,000 lbs
  • Vertical load limit: 7,500 lbs
  • Ball size: 2-5/16"

B&W Companion Installed in Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch

With the B&W Turnoverball underbed gooseneck trailer hitch you get the best of both worlds. When you go to tow a gooseneck trailer, the Turnoverball creates a sturdy, dependable connection with your trailer. And when you're done towing, you can stow the ball upside down in the hitch to get full bed access and a clean appearance. When you're ready to tow your fifth wheel trailer, just install the Companion in the ball hole in place of the gooseneck ball and lock the post in place using the built-in handle. You can remove the fifth wheel when you're done towing, leaving your truck bed open once again.

This kit is custom designed for your vehicle. The mounting brackets bolt to existing holes in your truck's frame. While some modification is required - you will need to cut a 4" diameter hole in your bed for the hitch ball and drill holes for the built-in safety chain loops - there is no need to weld onto or to drill into your frame.

Once you have the brackets and center section installed, set up the operating handle. This handle is designed to be accessed from the rear driver's-side wheel well. On the end of the handle is the heavy-duty steel pin that secures the mounting post of the Companion (or the base of the gooseneck hitch ball).

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Assembly of the B&W Companion

The Companion's pivot arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

  • Best 5th Wheel Hitch Setup For Full Bed Access On A 2011 Ford F350
Hello Jonathan, thanks for reaching out. The best way to keep full bed access on your 2011 F350 will be to go with a B&W Tunoverball/Companion hitch setup. For your truck you can use # BWGNRK1111-5W for the installation kit and the # BWRVK3400-5W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch. There are a few big advantages to going with this setup. First, the installation kit is actually a B&W gooseneck hitch. So, with the hitch removed from the bed, you will still have the full bed at your disposal with...

If the goal is to have a clean and free truck bed when you aren't towing a 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer then the absolute best solution for you is the Custom Underbed Installation Kit for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # BWGNRK1111-5W. The Andersen Ultimate Connection 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch System with Adapter, # AM3200 is a great hitch for specific purposes, primarily for lighter weight rigs and utility/work trailers. While yes it can be used to haul larger toy haulers such as yours, you are doing so now, it will not provide the smoother ride quality of other hitches that have features built into them to address the annoying chucking that comes from hauling 5th wheel units. • Compatibility of Curt Gooseneck Hitch with B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch
To install a fifth wheel hitch that would be compatible with your existing Curt gooseneck hitch, I'd recommend using Curt X-5 adapter, part # C16210. This adapter will lock into a Curt Double-Lock, Flip and Store gooseneck hitches (C-60 and C-600 series). The adapter provides bed rails for a fifth wheel hitch that uses industry standard bed rails like Reese, Curt, Draw-Tite, Valley or Husky. The Curt Q20, part # C16130 would be a good choice. The hitch has a 20,000 lb capacity and a dual...

We have just what you are looking for. The B and W Companion hitches like the part # BWRVK3400-5W are great because they install in a gooseneck hitch ball hole instead of into large rails that would obstruct the bed of your truck when not towing. • How to Determine Clearance for Gooseneck Hitch on 2016 Dodge Ram 2500
You need to use the following calculation to find if you have enough clearance: (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the gooseneck ball to the truck cab B = Offset used C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2. So your A is 35" and C is 48" which means right now Clearance = -13". You really want A to be 4" more than C so in this case you need a 17" offset. Even if you combine an offset ball with an offset adapter you aren't going to be able to get to 17" or even 13". The...

  • Troubleshooting 5th Wheel Chucking with Andersen Ultimate Gooseneck Hitch
The Andersen Ultimate is a nice option for being lightweight, but it is not any help with chucking as you described. It has absolutely no built in assistance for that function. You are pulling a really big trailer, so the chucking will be worse with that than a lightweight 5th wheel because there is simply more momentum so you will feel it more. There really isn't a way to help with the chucking you are experiencing with that particular hitch as air ride will definitely help some but...

  • What Capacity 5th Wheel Hitch Is Needed To Tow A Keystone Montana High Country 5th Wheel Trailer
Hey Gary, The rule of thumb with towing is to only use about 80-85% of the total capacity to leave a 10-15% buffer for safety. Using this method a 20k rated fifth wheel hitch would be good for trailer's with a GVWR up to around 16,000 - 17,000lbs. I would check the white sticker that should be on the driver's side of the trailer at the front for the GVWR. Since you have a 6-1/2' bed you'll want to go with a sliding base hitch like the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider...

  • Under Bed 5th Wheel Installation Kit and Hitch for a 2017 Ford F-250 4x4 with 6-1/2 Foot Bed
There are below the bed 5th wheel installation kits for the 2017 Ford F-250; just not any Reese kits. The reason for that is Reese makes the factory under bed install kit for Ford so they tend not to release an aftermarket kit right away (or at all in some cases) which gives Ford exclusivity to it. If you do not already have a Reese Elite Series hitch then you can go with one of the other under bed kits and a hitch for it. I would need to know the bed length of your truck and if it is...

  • Will B&W Companion Fit 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 Short Bed
Hi Eric; I'm not sure where you saw that but we have had other customers successfully install the # BWRVK3400-5W without any issues. If the design of the bed on your 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 would not allow the installation of the Companion we wouldn't list it as an option and B&W would have notes saying the Companion is not compatible. You can definitely use this 5th wheel hitch with your truck.

Hey Keith, thanks for the question and I appreciate all that info. I checked with our manufacturers and can verify there will not be any interference with air bags like the Air Lift # AL57295 and the Custom Underbed Installation Kit for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # BWGNRK1313-5W. This is the correct kit for your 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Crew Cab with a diesel engine, will work with air bags, and will allow you to use the superb B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider #...

  • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel HItch & Rails For 2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty
First, let's start with if you can use a sliding hitch in a long bed, and yes you definitely can, you simply won't use the slide feature but otherwise it will work exactly the same. As for the hitch and base rails, I highly recommend the B&W Patriot, with the correct parts for your 2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty being the following: - B&W Patriot 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider # BWRVK3270 - B&W Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails # BWRVK2402 I really like the Patriot because there just...

  • How To Identify A Factory 5th Wheel Prep Package On A 2012 Ford F-250
According to the picture you have attached, it doesn't look like your 2012 Ford F-350 is equipped with the factory prep package. The odds are that if you cannot physically see the hitch or pucks in the bed, then you do not have the prep package. I have attached a photo of what your bed would look like if you had a factory prep package on a 2012 Ford F-350. If you don't have the factory prep package and would like to add the B&W Gooseneck Hitch, you will need part # BWGNRK1111. This is...

  • Recommendation for a 2014 Ram 2500 Short Bed To Navigate Tight Campground Turns
I can help you navigate those tight turns in your 2014 Ram 2500. Since the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter # CAB-C5GX1216 that you referenced does not move the pivot point further back you really do not gain much clearance for tight turns with a short bed truck. Also, if you use an offset adapter like this you can not use an additional offset adapter like the B and W extender you referenced. This would cause too much leverage on the trailer. Instead I would highly...

  • 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 Recommended Underbed Kit to Tow 5th Wheel Trailer
The underbed hitch system I recommend for your 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 is the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1020-5W that can be paired with the Sliding # BWRVK3400-5W or Stationary # BWRVK3500-5W B&W Companion 5th wheel hitch since there isn't a standard aftermarket puck system for your truck. We do have the Demco kit # DR37FR which looks more similar to the OEM puck kit, but Demco designed this to only work with their 5th wheel hitches as a direct connection so you'll get a lot more use out...

There are some underbed mounted fifth wheel hitch install kits but as of right now none of them install a puck system. The only underbed kit available for your Ram is the B&W, part # BWGNRK1384-5W, that uses the B&W companion hitch, part # BWRVK3400-5W. • Which B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch For 2024 Toyota Tundra
Hi Cory, There is a B&W Companion 5th wheel hitch that will work with your 2024 Toyota Tundra with a composite bed, though it is a different part number than the one you asked about, as that one is for Chevy/GMC trucks with a puck system. Instead, you'll need the mounting rails (which even doubles as a gooseneck hitch), and either a fixed or sliding Companion. You'll need the fixed hitch if you have an 8 foot bed, and the sliding hitch if you have a short bed. The correct parts to add...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch for Clean Bed Once Removed on a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 Short Bed
If you are wanting to keep the bed of your 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 clean then I highly recommend using the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W because it mounts in the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1059-5W. Instead of having bed rails in the bed of your truck you just have the gooseneck hitch ball receiver and safety chain loops as you can see in the attached photo. The Companion is made right here in the USA, has a 20,000 lb weight capacity (which is more than your pickup), 17" - 19" of height...

If you are wanting to go with a 5th wheel hitch that uses the standard base rails then I recommend going with the Curt A20 # C16541 along with Base Rails Kit # RP50066-58. This 5th wheel hitch is one of the best hitches that we currently carry due to the dual-jaw system and the pivoting head to help secure the king pin and...

  • Will Demco Recon 5th Wheel Hitch Fit B&W Gooseneck Hitch on 2017 Ram 2500 Short Bed
Yes, the Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # DM8550045 is an excellent option for your B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # BWGNRK1384 on your 2017 Ram 2500. The only thing you'll want to check is that you have enough turning clearance so your 5th wheel trailer doesn't make contact with your truck cab. If you're unsure how to determine this here is our formula: (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from center of fifth wheel hitch jaw to truck cab...

Hi Brady, When installing the pivot arms on your B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w Slider # BWRVK3370 you'll want to ensure that you have 6" of clearance between the bed rails and the nose of your 5th wheel and 16" - 24" between the bumper of your truck and the body of your camper. To determine the height you'll measure the height from the ground to the floor of your truck bed and subtract it from the height from the ground to the king pin plate while the camper is level.
