Fifth-Wheel Towing with Your Gooseneck Hitch

There are a variety of adapters on the market that let you tow a fifth-wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. You can use a coupler adapter that replaces the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and then attaches to the gooseneck hitch in your truck bed. But these adapters often require modifications to your trailer that can void the warranty. Another option would be using fifth-wheel rails that mount directly to your gooseneck hitch, usually by dropping into the hitch's ball hole. But to do this you have to make 2 separate purchases - the adapter plate that has the rails and a standard fifth-wheel hitch.

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Installation of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, position the slider base so that the post inserts into your Turnoverball hitch's ball hole (in place of the hitch ball). Secure the post using the handle of the Turnoverball, just as you would secure the hitch ball. The post is square like the base of your gooseneck hitch ball. This square design helps to eliminate any twisting or turning of the post - and therefore the mounted fifth-wheel hitch - in your gooseneck hitch.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

  • Can I Transfer B&W Companion BWRVK3400 Over To New 2025 GMC 2500 HD?
Hello Joe, thanks for reaching out. If you were to install a B&W Tunoverball Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1020 you would be able to easily transfer your # BWRVK3400 5th wheel hitch to your new truck. If your new 2025 GMC 2500 HD comes with the factory puck system in the bed, you will need to buy a new base to fit the puck system. You will be able to re use the head unit from your BWRVK3400 hitch so you can buy just the base and save a bit of money. If your new GMC is a short bed, use the...

  • B&W Companion Slider Stuck in Gooseneck Hitch Troubleshooting
Sounds like your B and W Companion Slider part # BWRVK3400 is stuck in the gooseneck ball shank of your truck bed. What we normally recommend when this happens is to connect to a fifth wheel trailer like you normally would, and then with the pin pulled out from the shank of the gooseneck hitch use the landing gear jacks to see if you can lift the hitch out of the truck bed. This is a great way to gain a mechanical advantage over the problem. Once you get it out I'd recommend greasing...

  • Adapting a Gooseneck Hitch to Tow a 5th Wheel Trailer with a 2011 Ford F-350
The hole for gooseneck balls are not all the same. The Companion hitches such as # BWRVK3050, which was designed for flat bed trucks, only fit B&W Turnover Ball gooseneck hitches. For a gooseneck ball that sticks up from the bed (and is not recessed in a cavity like on a flat bed truck) you can use the Demco Recon hitch # DM8550045. It clamps around a 2-5/16 inch gooseneck ball. I have included a link to a video review of this hitch for you. Another option is to adapt the trailer by...

  • Solution for Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer with Curt Double-Lock Hitch on 2017 Chevy Silverado 2500
While we do have other options for you, the only way to use the B&W Companion # BWRVK3500 or # BWRVK3400 is by having the entire B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1016 installed on your 2017 Chevy Silverado 2500 as there isn't a way to safely fit different parts of gooseneck hitches together. With that being said, I'm a little curious about the gooseneck hitch you currently have installed. Reason being that the Chevy factory gooseneck hitch would have needed all of the pucks installed as well...

The Reese Goosebox works very well. It's air ride feature would spare the frame from the beating it would experience from other gooseneck adapters. Lippert is the largest manufacturer of 5th wheel frames, and they have endorsed the Goosebox, and have stated that using the Goosebox won't invalidate their frame warranty. Since it works okay with Lippert frames, there's no reason to believe it wouldn't work with a Northwood frame, but if your RV is still under warranty, then using an air...

  • B and W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Ford F-250
We have just what you are looking for. The correct Companion hitch you'll need for your short bed 2017 Ford F-250 is the slider Companion part # BWRVK3400 if you do not have the factory rail kit to give you the needed turn clearance. For the rail kit you'd then need the B and W Turnoverball Gooseneck hitch part # BWGNRK1116 which is confirmed as a fit for your truck. If you have the factory rail kit you'd instead want the part # BWRVK3370 which fits the rail kit directly in your truck bed.

  • How to Remove Stuck B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400
I spoke to my contact at B&W and we believe that the problem on your B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400 has to do with that center shank is wedged in your hitch. If you can disengage the pin that secures the slider to your gooseneck hitch and then slam the hitch itself back and forth that should loosen it up enough that you can remove it. The other option would be to use a long crowbar to try to loosen it up from underneath your truck, but the first method should do the trick.

  • Troubleshooting King Pin Not Releasing From B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch
The most common cause for the jaws of a 5th wheel hitch like the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400 not to open is too much tongue weight still on the truck. You will want to make sure that your trailer's landing gear is adjusted properly so that the trailer is level and the pressure/weight is relieved from the hitch and your truck. It's also possible that you are simply parked on unlevel ground, which can lead to the jaws remaining wrapped around the king pin even after turning the handle. When...

  • How B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch Installs into Turnover Ball Gooseneck Hitch
If your truck currently has a B&W Turnover Ball Gooseneck Hitch, you would indeed place the hitch in the truck bed, and latch the hitch into place. You might need to make some minor adjustments to the strips on the underside of the base that sit in the bed corrugations and adjust the draw-down bolt to get it aligned with the gooseneck hitch latch, but that's all you'd need to do.
