How To Wire a Harley Ultra Classic with a 5-Pole Round and a Trailer with a 4 Pole Flat

Question:

I am guess that you have a connector similar to the 5-Pole round like part # PK11502. If this is the case, you have two options. You can either remove the 5-Pole round from your Harley and put a 4-Pole flat in place, or you can cut the connector of your trailer and use a 5-Pole connector for the trailer. I imagine the 5-Pole on the bike is mounted pretty well, so I would suggest replacing the trailer connector with a 5-Pole using part # PK11501. Using a circuit tester, like part # 3808, determine which signal is on which pin on your Harley connector. A 5-Pole round will have a wire for left hand turn and brake light, one for right hand brake and turn light, one for running lights, one for ground and typically the last wire is either for a brake controller or reverse lights. I attached a review video for the # 40376 for you to check out also. Unless your trailer has brakes or reverse lights, you can omit the last wire. Once you have determined which pins do what on the Harley connector, you will attach the wires to the new 5-Pole round for the trailer in the correct positions so they will mate up properly with the Harley connector. Typically a trailer is wired using the following color code: White - Ground, Green - Right turn and brake, Yellow - Left turn and brake, and Brown - Running lights.

That is simple enough to take care of. We do have converters that will do just that. I would use part # 119147KIT. The converter uses a direct feed from the battery to power the lights with an independent fuse, so you should no longer blow the brake light fuse.

First you will need a circuit tester, like 3808, to identify which of those wires carry which signal. Once you have identified which wire is which, you will need a converter to bring the 3 wire system on the bike down to a 2 wire system as what is on most trailers. This would be accomplished, in your case, with a 119175 converter. This converter will work if your wires from your plug and play connector have the following five functions: ground, tail light, left turn, right turn and brake.
