I’ve got lithium batteries in my camper. Can I use one of these Zerostart wraps on them if I’m careful? – Wes

Hey Wes, I’d avoid it. All of the battery heaters we carry, such as the 50w # ZE77FR, 80w # ZE87FR, and 160w # ZE27FR Zerostart pads, are not recommended for lithium-ion batteries because they heat too directly on the case. Lithium cells need controlled, internal heating. Look for a lithium-specific warmer or battery with built-in heat instead.

Some (mostly higher end) lithium batteries actually have an internal heater or self heater to take care of that. At minimum, most lithium batteries at least have a low-temp shut down to protect the system.

What brand of lithium batteries are you running?

Thanks, Andrew. Makes sense. They’re Battle Born 100Ah lithiums in an enclosed box under my camper. Temps here drop into the teens pretty often through winter.

@Wes Oh nice, those Battle Borns are solid! Good call keeping them in an enclosed box - that alone helps a ton. Since you’re seeing temps in the teens, I’d look into a 12V self-heating pad made specifically for lithium banks, or even Battle Born’s heated battery line (not sure if they sell them in 100ah though). They’re designed to warm gradually and safely. Do you keep the camper plugged into shore power during winter, or mostly rely on solar?

@AndrewN A bit of both. Mostly shore power in winter, but I’ve got 400 watts of solar up top that helps when it’s sunny. The Battle Borns do have that low-temp cutoff, so they’ve been fine - just slow to charge when it’s really cold.

@Wes That’s a great setup, and you’re absolutely right, that cutoff saves the cells from cold damage. With the mix of solar and shore, you’re already ahead of the game. If you ever go to the heated version, they integrate right into your same setup, no wiring changes. Sounds like you’ve got your system pretty dialed in for winter camping!
