How do you measure bolt pattern ? stud to stud? are straight across stud to stud

You can actually measure the bolt pattern of a wheel in either way that you mentioned. I attached a picture that shows how to measure across center of the wheel to determine the bolt pattern but if you have a 5 lug bolt pattern you can also measure from center to center on studs that are next to each other.

If the distance is:
2-5/8" - bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2
2-3/4" - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4
3" - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5
3-1/4" - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2
