Recommended Hitch Receiver and Ball Mount for John Deere X590 to Tow Log Splitter

Published 09/29/2017

Question:

Great solution. Just one follow on question The jack shown with the splitter is not really a jack but a stand. I still must lift the unit, kick the stand out of the way, move the unit, then bring the stand back down. And this thing is heavy. 1. So, I'm guessing if I really want to add a jack I can? I was think of the MaxxTow (MT70149) 14 3/4 fully retracted. I asked the question from the Fulton product page as I would be looking to see if there was a fully retracted jack that went below 9" and after think a bit more realized that was dumb. That black frame is 3 x 3 approximately (did measure it but don't have that with me) Then all the other parts/recommendations still work. 2. But is there any advantage to a ball mount with less rise? I plan to use this setup only for towing the log splitter around the homestead. We do have some rough terrane and some slops around 10-13 deg although I would just tow through those areas and not setup. The setup recommended produces a hitch ball sitting approximately 17" I'm guessing. Just wanted to double check. Everything looks great and I'm excited to place the order and get this set up. I'll send in some photo's once she's all together.

For your John Deere x590, I recommend the Reese Towpower 3-Way ATV Hitch w/ Ball Mount Adapter - 2,000 lbs # RP7065100. This will give you a 2 inch receiver that will allow you to use a ball mount like # C45112 in the rise position to get you at the right height for your hitch ball and coupler to meet. This will allow your current jack to work and save your back. I've attached an article to assist with finding the correct ball mount for your trailer. Then you will just need the matching hitch ball for your coupler.

Unfortunately a jack isn't an option for the height you need of the pole tongue length of your log splitter.

Based on the design of your splitter, I don't believe a swivel jack will fit. It doesn't appear to have enough space behind the coupler to mount. However, I think the solution would be to remove the current support bar and add the Square Drop Leg Stabilizer Jack # SJ-R208. You will want to use a ball mount that has the rise that will allow you to tow the log splitter as level as possible. Slightly down toward the hitch ball is better than slightly high. You can also use an adjustable option like the # TK5007 to give you and adjustable height to make it easier.
